Cydney Woods

Hi, I have wanted to do this rose ever since you posted it. I want to thank you for posting these advanced projects. It really pushes me to get better and your instructions are impeccable. I want to advance in my water color journey and with teachers like you, I have the tools necessary to try. THANK YOU

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much Cydney. I hope you enjoy painting it. 💙

SC

This is such a beautiful and delicate painting and your tutorial of it is absolutely terrific ~

Anne Watman

This is helpful! I was wondering the same thing.

Anne Watman

I’m still working on this one! And, I stuck with the hot press. In a lot of ways it’s been very frustrating, but I’m also learning a lot. A couple of times I felt like I was done, but then I’d decide to try to darken some areas. I tend to want it to look like yours, but that’s not possible because even you have said you can’t duplicate one of your paintings. What I love is that I’m learning to fix some things, when I can, and I’m also learning to appreciate the things that “happen,” just because it’s watercolor! The background and leaves are taking a number of layers!!

Louise De Masi

It's fantastic that you're embracing the learning process Anne. I love that you're navigating your learning with a positive mindset and learning to embrace what it gives you rather than trying to make it behave all the time. ❤️

Rosemary Collier

I cannot tell you enough how wonderful your tutorials are. My finished white rose is stunning! I have improved greatly from painting so many of your tutorials. I am so addicted and paint every day. Thank you so very much for your detailed presentation and calm manner. It is such a joy learning from you! I feel I need better brushes and wondering what you recommend. I have quite a few but am pretty disappointed with most of them. Thank you Louise!

Louise De Masi

Hi Rosemary, I'm thrilled to hear that you're enjoying the tutorials and seeing such great progress in your painting! That's wonderful. Thank you for your kind words 🥰. Here is a link on to my website where I list all the brushes I like to use: https://www.louisedemasi.com/brushes Copy and paste the link into your browser. Let me know if you need more help.

MistyBlue Ayres

I'm having trouble with these links...can't download the outline. Are they still active?

Louise De Masi

Hi MistyBlue, Dom here. Yes the downloadable files are all still active. Try logging out and back in.

Jean Bickiewoo

Thank you Louise. From the day I saw your beautiful artwork I was obsessed. Your calming voice gets me through each piece and I have gone from drawing stick figures to producing art I can be proud of. Ive learned so much in such a short time thanks to your helpful explanations. I paint daily if I can and can't wait to tackle the next tutorial.

Terri H.

This is gorgeous Louise! I’m so excited to watch and try this beautiful rose! They’re my favorite flower!💕

Paige Flutterbye

This is absolutely magnificent Louise. Thank you so incredibly much. Definitely needed something beautiful today. Thank you!

john drake

Louise, I can not find the watercolor board to purchase. Can you provide some suggestions/links as to where I might find it available. Thanks.

LL Southworth

I can almost smell that rose's sweetness! I'm so happy that I found you! I'm getting very antsy to pick up my brushes again. Right now, I'm focused on getting my Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt top finished. Then, I can come out & play again! "Goody Goody for me," as my Gramma Emma would say!

Huna

So pretty! Thank you, thank you!

Louise De Masi

Hi John, I have a sneaking suspicion that Arches aren't making the boards anymore. I tried to order some about a week ago from my art supplier here in Australia and they said they weren't keeping them anymore. I've had a look this morning on the internet and other places here in Australia say they are out of stock. That's really frustrating because it's my favourite paper to paint on because of the fact that I don't need to stretch it. I know Daler Rowney also make a watercolour board but I've never used them so I can't tell you what they are like. Here's the link https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/daler-rowney-langton-watercolour-board-30x22in-hot-pressed I'm sorry. I wish I had better news.

Kathy Johnson

“Beautiful”!!! I’ve just finished watching the white Rose part 1—and can hardly wait to move on to part 2!!! Again-such a “beautiful” painting!!! Thank you for such detailed how tos!!! I took a photo of a “lovely” white huge Gardenia this afternoon from our garden—very similar coloring to your Rose—my hope is that I will at some point be able to take what I learn from this class and apply it to the Gardenia!!! 🤗

Louise De Masi

Thank you Kathy. Gardenias are beautiful. You could use similar or the same colours. I've got a few photos of my gardenias that I hope to paint one day too.

Kathy Johnson

I’ll be “keeping an eye out” for your Gardenia painting!!! 🤗

cherie

Thanks for the Q&A on this - I've been looking also with no luck. I'm also having trouble finding anyone other than amazon that has a da vinci cosmotop spin liner (series 1280) in triple zero. It could be down to my searching ability of course, but just wondering if you happen to recall Louise where you got yours from? Many thanks, Cherie

cherie

Super excited to give this one a try - SO beautiful. Thank you :)

Louise De Masi

Hi Cherie, I get all my brushes from Parkers Fine Art Supplies in Sydney https://www.parkersartsupplies.com They don't have all of their stock online. The store is packed to the rafters with stock. If you emailed them they could probably help you. I have also recently been buying supplies online from Jacksons. I just found a cosmotop spin liner there but it's a different series to mine. I think the hairs of the brush are shorter but that won't matter. Here's the link if you want to take a look https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/da-vinci-cosmotop-spin-series-5580-size-3-0

Louise De Masi

I've emailed Arches John. I asked them if they are still manufacturing it and if they are I've asked them where we can buy it. I'll let you know when I hear from them.

cherie

Oh that's super kind of you Louise - thanks so much! I'll definitely check those out. Thanks :)

Susan Luczak

Hi Louise, I just signed up for your tutorial and am having problems wit the white rose.

Louise De Masi

Hi Susan. Welcome. I’m sorry I’m away for the weekend in Sydney visiting my son for his birthday and I just logged in and I saw your message. Are you having painting difficulties or technical difficulties?

Bette McDowell

Hi! Hoping to start on this later this week. What could I use to mix brown ochre?

Louise De Masi

Hi Bette, Brown Ochre is a soft orangey brown or earthy brown color. You could substitute with Burnt Sienna or Magnesium Brown. You could also use Burnt Umber or even Raw Umber.

Bette McDowell

Thank you! I just remembered that i have a set ofbl Daniel Smith dot cards and there is a brown umber. I should have enough for this painting!

Kathy bath

I am also having issues. The rose that I traced seems to have a lot more lines in it and I got very confused with where I was supposed to be painting. I think i will have another go but download the two completed sections so I can see exactly where to paint rather than try to paint at the same time as watching the video.

Louise De Masi

Yes that's a must. I know it's not easy painting from a video. If I was watching a video of someone else painting I think I would watch the whole thing through then watch it again just to get the process clear in my mind. Then I'd use the progress photos and finished painting to help me paint it. I'd use the video then to remind myself of what I was doing and if I got stuck I would check it again. This painting is difficult at the start in the centre of the rose.

Jackie

Hi Louise. I'm enjoying your tutorials so much! I even sold one of my paintings to a gentleman that wanted to give it to his wife for Mother's Day last week (I gave you credit of course). I am trying to find the Arches watercolor boards but have been unsuccessful. Where do you get yours, I

Jackie

I meant to add that I'm in the U.S. and have looked at several online suppliers. And I also wanted to thank you for your wonderful instruction and thorough videos. I'm having so much fun here! Thank you!

Louise De Masi

Hi Jackie, I'm glad you are enjoying the classes. Arches don't make it anymore unfortunately. I have a stash here at home that I'm working my way through but once it's gone I'll have to go back to stretching all my paper. Daler Rowney make a watercolour board called 'Langton'. I have a sheet that I haven't tried yet. The only other board I know of is Crescent watercolor board. I tried it but didn't like how fragile it was when I tried to lift highlights after the paint had dried. That's what I painted the Eucalyptus leaves on.

Jackie

Thank you so much. I'll stop trying to find it. :) I did see the Crescent brand and good to know that you didn't care much for it. I do have some Arches 300 lb. paper that I have yet to try. And just to let you know....I'm working on the white rose tutorial right now and loving it! So far, so good! Fingers crossed. That background looks challenging.

Louise De Masi

The background was hard. I struggled a bit. There's lots of layers on it so take your time. Good luck!

Elena Silveira

Hi ther in Australia.... so happy at least I can enter to your patreon. I share in your facebook paga the owl barn, and now my firsy paint, the hiacinth. As you see I have a special relation with big birds as volunterr house keeper at the zoo.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Elena and welcome again! You must see some wonderful animals when you work at the zoo! I wouldn't be able to get any work done if I did that. I'd be distracted by the animals all the time. 💕

Renee Howard Cassese

Looking forward to painting this beautiful rose. I printed out the progress photos but they come with a gray background and it's hard to see the detials.

Louise De Masi

Hi Renee, I just tried to lighten them a little in Photoshop. I've uploaded them again. I'm not sure if they'll print any better for you. If you have an iPad it might be better to upload them to that instead of printing them.

Etty Bilsky-Kanger

i finished my white rose yesterday and uploaded it to facebook. i did have some difficulties with the tracing, there did seem to be so many lines which. when I started the centerpart of the rose, I could"t recognize. would it be possible, with such an intricate subject, to number the segments so as to be able to follow with ease? Just a thought. It was a great tutorial!. The way you made part of the leaves fade into to background with the Payne's grey !!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Etty. It's not an easy subject with all of those little petals in the middle. I think I'll choose simpler rose subjects in future with a rose that is not so tight in the centre. 💕

Nancy Gosnell

Is it possible to get the line drawing in an A3 format?

Marika Roth

I have decided to try the white rose in the larger size because I had trouble with the intricate detail when I did it in the small version. My paper is #300 lb Artistico Hot Press. I just want to make sure this is correct before I start. The size of the paper is 20 x 16. Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Sounds good Marika. I hope you find it easier in the larger format.

Suranga Ketkar

I absolutely LOVE this painting. Thank you for being a great teacher. I have taken a picture of a rose from my garden. I would love some tips on how to paint it.

Marika Roth

I have managed to get the rose done and so far that part looks ok to me, but getting the dark background looking good is very hard. Will the layering of the payne's gray eventually make it look more unified. Right now I am getting uneven splotches that I was not planning on. Hot press #300 paper, but still difficult. Please help!!!

Louise De Masi

Hi Marika, The same thing happened to me. I had to layer quite a bit before I was happy with it. Don't give up. Keep layering until you get the depth of colour that satisifes you.

Marika Roth

It's getting better. Not used to doing a background as opaque as this. Hard to get even coverage. Hope you are feeling better.

madhuri chunduru

Hi Louise, this is Madhuri.....glad I found your tutorials....the best tutorial I found so far...may I know how draw the drawings and make it to 2 parts A3 left and A3 right sizes....curious to know...thank you

Louise De Masi

Hi Madhuri, thank you very much! I do it in Photoshop. I make a file A3 size -16.5" by 11.7" and I place my drawing on it. Then I make two A4 size files. I drag the A3 file onto the A4 file and I don't resize it. It only fits half the line drawing on the smaller file. I drag the A3 file onto the second A4 file and move it to place the other half of the drawing.

Holly Watson

Hi Louise, The color combinations in this painting are absolutely gorgeous. Your teaching is phenomenal! I'm getting ready to trace the line drawing onto my watercolor paper now, we'll see how it goes...

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Holly. That's very kind of you. I hope you enjoy painting it. Take your time - it's not a quick one. 💕

Holly Watson

I don't have the Winsor Newton brown ochre, I do have WN gold ochre and WN Yellow ochre. was thinking of mixing a little daniel smith burnt umber with one of those. Any thoughts?

Louise De Masi

That sounds like a good idea Holly. Mix it into both and see what you prefer or you may even be able to get away with just substituting Brown Ochre with Gold Ochre and don't mix the Burnt Umber in. It's the tonal value rather than the hue itself that is important.
