White Rose for Patreon Part 2

This is Part 2 of the White Rose painting. In this video I paint the leaves and the background and a few finishing touches on the rose.

I’m getting ready to do the gray background. After doing several of your paintings using your burnt sienna and french ultramarine mix, could I use that as the background color?

Louise De Masi

Yes Lynn, you could use those two colours mixed together. 💕

I’m enjoying this, but also a bit frustrated with the leaves. I used W&N permanent sap green and it looks different than yours. It’s hard to get it dark enough, but I can add a second layer. The worst is my dark sap green. I don’t see that in W&N so I bought D. Smith. It seems to be a granulating color, and I’m having an awful time getting it to blend. Louise, I don’t expect to be as good as you, but I find hot press to be much harder to blend, in general, than cold press. I watch you do it so effortlessly, and I try to see what I’m doing wrong. Then I try to adjust, and it seems like I always have mixed results. I’ve made a lot of progress, so I’m not complaining. What am I missing do you think? Is it my paint, my paper or just more practice? Maybe it’s all three!

Louise De Masi

Keep using cold pressed paper Anne. I prefer working on cold pressed too. I used hot press years ago when I was working in licensing because paintings scan 'cleaner' on hot press. It's better for reproduction purposes. I have some full sheets of hot press left over here at home and from time to time I use them - just to use the paper up. It's probably the hot press paper that is frustrating you.

Anne Watman

Thank you, Louise. I am doing so good, I can’t believe it. I can paint with watercolor! But, you’re right, hot press is very different, and it’s frustrating for me. I’m going to see if I can finish what I’ve started. If it doesn’t turn out, fine. I’ll chalk it up to learning. I’m experimenting a little now, and maybe I’ll discover something! You have helped me so much. ❤️

Another one of your lovely tutorials is under my belt. I was initially intimidated by doing a white rose, but loved doing this one. The background, however, was the real challenge in the end. I have preferred doing the none background one because always found backgrounds a challenge, but got there in the end :) Once again, thank you for another fine tutorial. Next up is the sea turtle. x

Rita Morris

Hi Louise this is so beautiful would it be okay to do our own background such a lovely tutorial thank you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Rita, yes of course. Have fun with it. Thank you!

Kathy Johnson

I ”love” how the background makes your White Rose just “pop off” the page!!! 🤗

Bethanie Wilkinson

I love the leaf work! Thank I am just learning and although my flowers come out great the leaves are too flat. I learned a lot how to give them depth.

Margret Martin

I can just about smell the fragrance! Lovely!

Paige Flutterbye

absolutely incredible Louise- thank you so much. I have watched part 1 of the tutorial and you explained everything so amazingly (you put so much effort into everything). can't wait to watch this. Thank you!

Bethanie Wilkinson

I used Arches cold pressed but the texture was too difficult to get a detailed rose, I tried again on Cranson hot pressed paper and the rose came out beautiful but I struggled with the background leaves. I’ll upload a picture if I can.

Paula Bush

just beautiful! I have never painted backgrounds and always wanted to...love this!

Lydia Frazier Bosley

It will be a while before I try this one but I just watched both videos all the way through for a lovely afternoon of entertainment - thanks, Louise!

Charlotte Waymire

I could literally feel your frustration with that background...

Elena

Awesome tutorial! The background WAS hard, but I learned so much, thank you!

You said you used Arches watercolor board for this one. I am unable to find this product online. Is it 300 lb hot press paper?

Louise De Masi

Yes, unfortunately it's no longer manufactured. I have a few sheets here at home that I bought a few years ago. You could use 300lb paper (cold or hot press, whatever you prefer). 300lb cold press Arches is my favourite paper to use.

Thank you, Louise!
