This was a fun tutorial. Thank you! Finally was able to return to this painting. Have a bit more to do and to revisit painting the leaves.

Alexa

The tutorial was very instructive and helped me a lot, especially with the leaves, thank you!

Hotflash Vickie

Glad you're demonstrating how to remove the paper from the board, and I look forward to watching that part, too! Took me a while to find "water-activated tape" here in the States; I was beginning to think they didn't make it anymore! And it took me a while to find a DaVinci "mop" brush, too, because I kept searching for "mop" brushes on all the shopping sites I normally use (Blick, Amazon, even Jackson's).... and then I finally saw the one you used in your video and a lightbulb went off over my head just like a Bugs Bunny cartoon and I thought, "Oh, it must be called something else, too, Vickie, you big dummy." So then I started searching for QUILL brushes and such, and what do you know; there it was!! My new QUILL brush will be here in a couple of days :) SO excited, since I'm convinced that's why my fox looked hideous.... that and the fact my salt didn't work. So sad. I must have let it dry too much, or it was too wet. Or something! I've decided I must practice with salt first!! Definitely!! Cannot WAIT to try the sunflower, though. Hope there is a MOP brush involved, as I feel prepared now!

Louise De Masi

Well there you go, I learnt something new. I didn't know they were called quill brushes too. Thank you Vickie. Yes salt is tricky to use. It's all in the timing. I've got a YouTube video on how to use salt- if you haven't seen it- it might help. You've got to wait unti the sheen on the paper starts to leave but if you wait too long the paper will be too dry. Enjoy the sunflower! I don't use a mop/quill brush when I paint it but you can use yours if you want to! 😝

Janine Hobbs

Tried my hand with the sunflower. Had such a good time. Did it in stages. Not anything like yours but I was pleased having not watercolored for sometime.

Marijke de Boer

Beautiful - can't wait to get started - very hot here at the moment so am waiting for cooler weather:)

Marijke de Boer

I did the sunflower and had so much fun with it. I am really pleased with it too:) I did not have gold ochre but used yellow ochre and mixed a bit of orange into it. It worked well:) Thank you so much, you are such a good teacher. I do not have a hairdryer so I always end up completing the painting in a different order......from flower to leaf and back to flower etc. The way you set up your video it is easy to skip in between the different sections. Thank you!

Louise De Masi

That's great to hear Marijke. I'm glad you are happy with it. Thank you! You're very clever to be able to skip all over the place. I'd be lost without my hair dryer.

Donna Robillard

I watched and painted the sunflower, then took a bunch of sunflower pictures of my sister in law's sunflower field. I added a muted background to capture the feel of the entire field with one main sunflower in focus. 2 weeks later I sold my painting for $40. I am beyond excited. Thank you for the wonderful tutorials to try new things.

Louise De Masi

Go you!! That's wonderful news Donna. Congratulations. That's so good to know and I'm so happy for you. A field of sunflowers? Wow - how amazing that would be! 🌻🌻 🌻

Cassandra Kinlyside

I finished the sunflower. It came out amazing and I’m still shucked

Jennifer Nicholson

Hi Louise can you tell me what I can use if I don't have sepia?

Louise De Masi

Sepia is a very dark brown. You could try mixing some black or another dark colour into one of the browns you do have. It won't be the same but it might help.

Patricia J Fullin

I am currently working on the sunflower and I have enjoyed all your videos, they kept me busy all during the cold months of lock down. You are an excellent teacher and I need your instruction since I am new to watercolor. I have completed the Koala paintings both adult and baby, the cow, the giraffe, and so many more. Thank you for so many enjoyable hours of watercolor.

Gale McKiddy

What a beautiful painting! I learned so much from watching your technique.

Tiphanie

I've just finished this painting and I'm so satisfied !! Just one question please : if I want to expose it in my kitchen do I have to do something special about humidity of the room ? Any protection solvant or other thing to protect the watercolor ? Any advice ? Thank you !!! I will take a photo and share it on Instagram soon !!! @quandlechatnestpasla Grateful Tiphanie !

Louise De Masi

That's great Tiphanie! Watercolour paintings need to be protected. They usually go in a frame behind glass. You can also glue them to a board but you must protect them with varnish or a wax medium. I have a video here on Patreon where I demonstrate how I glued watercolour paper to a board. After I'd finished the painting I sprayed it with a few coats of Krylon spray varnish. It's also important to hang them on a wall away from direct sunlight to stop them from fading.

Tiphanie

Ok !! Your professional experience is so precious !!!! Thank you for your answer !!!

Nettie Moss

Another few hours spent learning from you Louise; I cannot tell you how happy I am that you show us how to work using few colours - I only have to look at the reams of listed paints on some painters' work and it completely puts me off! That's their way - but not mine. What I also love is that I can apply your teaching methods to anything I want to paint, now that I have watched you for many (happy) hours - thank you so much, your hard work is so appreciated.

Wendy Kelcey

I just loved painting this sunflower Louise and I was really happy with the result! Your teaching is amazing! Thank you!!

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Nettie. I'm really pleased that you can adapt my methods to other subjects. You have so much talent. I've seen some of your work in the Fb group. 💕

Nettie Moss

Good heavens! coming from you that is a compliment . . . I am using the faded rose colours/techniques - to try to do faded sunflowers, so am using techniques from your sunflowers as well . . gets a bit complex but is good discipline - I think! Thank you ;-)

Linda Barnett

I was moved to do this painting to show support for the people of Ukraine. I so enjoy your tutorials. I only began painting in when I turned 70; I just retired and along came COVID. I have done quite a few of your tutorials and I find that I'm always learning something new. Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Linda. I'm glad you are learning from them.

Laurie Dougherty

Thanks for a great tutorial. I tried it on a canson cold press watercolor board and the color seemed to sit on top. It didn't want to soak it so that made soft edges a challenge. Can't wait to try another one of your tutorials. UPDATE - the package does not state 100% cotton so that must mean it is not! thanks.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Laurie. I haven't use Canson paper. I'm not sure if it's 100% cotton.
