Hi everyone,

Here is the Monstera Leaf tutorial. This was on my list of suggested subjects that you gave me and I happened to have one growing in a pot so I thought I'd get it done before I kill it 😬.

Can someone tell me, what skill level is this project considered?

Ed Fannon

Thank you, Louise!

Karen Lorenz

Thank you so much! I'm very into greenery these days. So many gorgeous versions of green!

Bette McDowell

Oh, lovely! I am working on a prayer plant but will do this after. :)

Sandy Roberts

Thank you Louise! You are a excellent teacher!!

cherie

It's beautiful - thanks so much! I can't wait to watch and paint along!

Kathy Wilden

Lovely painting Louise, well done!

Desert Morning

Thanks. I love your tutorials -- all of them I've looked at. They teach so much in a context that really helps you remember and use what you're learning. This looks like a great one to start in with.

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much! Good luck with it. Let me know if you need any help.

Terri Soha

Love this tutorial! It taught me a lot about layering. I don't know why, but I always thought I was doing it wrong if I had to keep layering to get values and color right. I'm learning that layering is a good thing! Thanks Louise!

Louise De Masi

That's good to know. Thank you Terri. I'm glad you found it useful.

Ayesha Chothia

Hi i am so excited for this one. Is there a supply list?

Desert Morning

This was a very challenging and interesting lesson for me. I was getting frustrated with the quality of my efforts at one point -- then decided to just keep painting. I plan to do a least 2 more of the very same thing....after I go back and watch the entire video again. I love the fact that it's essentially monochromatic...makes it much easier to focus on the effects of layering. I love learning how to do the shadows and contouring the leaf.

Michelle Wainer

So excited to try this! I did my sketch, watched the video, now I shall be painting. Thank you so much for these videos. For a beginner, they are gold.

Elaine

Great tutorial Louise. I thought I would be able to do this one but I really struggled with it. I’m not very happy with my finished painting so I will attempt it again.

My previous comment wouldn't edit, but I had paper that wouldn't take the water and it was looking messy, so I ditched it. I have Arches hot press, any good for this? Or maybe I should keep going with the original one and see what happens?

Louise De Masi

Arches hot pressed would be good to use for this. If you feel like it- keep going with the first one and use it as a practice piece. Then when you are ready try it again using the Arches paper.

susan

Ok thanks Louise, I'll give it a go.

Gabrielle Skaggs

So, for some reason I CANNOT get the darker little veins toward the bottom to look right. They either don't bleed at all and look like harsh lines, or they bleed way too much and go everywhere. I swear the paper is only damp but it just isn't working out. Could it be anything else? Like the paint or the paper?

Louise De Masi

It could be your paper Gabrielle. What are you using?

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Louise, I think I will try this one next. You are so patient with all the layering, that's something I need to learn! One question, when you apply water to only part of a previously painted area, say along the edge of the leaf, will there not be a "water mark" left at the border of the wetted area? (or maybe that's where you have to go back and soften the edge between wet and dry with a damp brush?). Thanks so much for your brilliant tutorials!

Louise De Masi

Hi Lydia, sometimes there is and other times there isn't. I'll keep an eye on it as it starts to dry and if I see a waterline appearing I'll take a damp brush and blend it away gently. 💕

Gale McKiddy

This is a wonderful video! I have to fight wanting to overwork my painting. Your directions and explanations are so clear, and you have explained where and why we should be careful. Did your staples go through your watercolor paper? Thanks, Louise

Louise De Masi

Thanks Gale. I have to do that too - I tend to overwork sometimes. I'm glad it was helpful. Yes the staples go through the watercolour paper. Sometimes the gummed tape fails (becomes unstuck) so I put the staples in - in case it does.

Karen Drennan

Hi, I am using Arches cold press 300 - before I get to the mop stage: 20:05 of the tutorial, my picture isn’t looking similar to the demo. I can’t seem to get the paint dark enough. It seems to keep floating to the edges in a fine line. Should I just keep dropping the sap green on anyway? Or, could it be that I am adding too much water? Using WN Perm Sap Green and Cotman Sap Grn. The Cotman was a darker (bluer) color and started using that but without luck.

Louise De Masi

Hi Karen, You might have too much water either on your paper, in your paint or on your brush. Try adjusting one or two of those and see if that helps.

Magdalena L

Thank you for the intersting lesson Louise!

Magdalena L

Again, I learned a lot. But I have to admit just green on green on green did made me feel fed up with the color halfway through. ;) Mine seems a bit overworked to me, but I can see a lot of positive sides to my version too.
