Hi everyone, here is a new watercolour tutorial for you. This is a sweet little Australian Robin.

Special thanks to Roger Fance who photographed the Rose Robin that I used as reference for this painting. He was very kind to give permission for me to use his photo and make a tutorial from it. His website where you can see more of his beautiful bird photos is here: https://500px.com/rogerfance

I hope you enjoy the tutorial. All the files you need to paint your own Rose Robin are listed below.

Louise, This is off topic but I discovered a new FREE app today by accident and wanted to share with you and art community. It is called the "Audubon Field Guide"! It is a wonderful tool for artists taking photos of wild birds to paint!

Now, I am going to paint this pink breasted bird!😊💕

Jacinthe Boudreau

Wow! I've just finished watching this tutorial Louise and I've enjoyed every step of it 💖. Your tutorial are very interesting to watch and so well done, explanation, the visual, showing us how you mix your colors on the palette ect.....your voice is beautiful and very calming to listen. Thank you so much for sharing all of this talent with us. ✨ This is my next painting along :))

Louise De Masi

That's very kind of you Jacinthe. Thank you very much. 💕

Debbie Renwick

I received the email notice of this tutorial while at work. I was mentally done! All I could think about was getting home to start painting this little cutie! Thank you Louise!!!

I've just realized that when you use the 'watery paint' you dab the excess pigment and water on the towel *before* bringing the brush to the paper! That expalins why I felt like I can never get the right 'watery' consistensy. I added more water and less water to that watery paint, but didn't try to dab the excess off of the brush as I felt it would take most of the pigment off of the brush (and there isn't a lot of pigment in the watery consistensy to begin with). I thought you always have a magic water bottle spray thingy that always sparys the right amount of water or something of the sort 🤣

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Debbie! Thank you. I hope you enjoy it. 💕

Louise De Masi

😂Lol... I'll try to show what I'm doing with the 'brush loading' more often. When the paper is wet and the paint is watery your brush only needs to be damp. My towel is right beside me and I'm constantly dabbing, picking up water, dabbing, picking up paint etc. It's something I do without thinking now and I do it fairly fast too. I'll try to use a second camera as much as I can so you can see what I'm doing. 😘

Me too (no pun intended!). I’ve been painting with watercolor for a while now, but always love to learn other artists methods and techniques and adapt them to my own style of painting and preferences, though I think your style comes close to mine. Yours and Billy Showell’s I think. You two have similarities is your styles (except for her being more detailed and less loose as botanical artists often are), but very different methods of achieving them. She’s more of a mixing in the palette, wet on wet, and dry brushing for textures and details type of artist which, minus the dry brushing part, was also my way of doing things until not too long ago. From you I’ve learned to mix on the paper, in which the water control element works very differently, especially if you don’t want to get blooms when you drop another color to a wash. I too always relied heavily on my towel for water control but always blot the excess water out before picking up the paint, not after. But obviously if you paint has too much water in it to begin with, you’ll still end up with a problem as I have lol... I understand your technique so much better now! And more importantly, it actually makes sense to me now (well, other than it being pure magic lol 😂)! Thanks for the detailed response 💜

Louise De Masi

I'm glad it's making more sense to you. I'm going to see if I can check out one of Billy's videos. I'm curious to see how she works. 💕

Donna Robillard

I love the way my rose robin turned out. Thank you. The branch didn't come out so nice, maybe I just assumed that part would be easy-lol But I love it!

Susan Turney

Hi Louise! I'm a huge fan and so happy to have found you on YouTube. I've gone through and drawn the birds I want to work on after I finish the blue/purple parrot. I'm having a problem with the list of paints you use. When I click on it it tells me I have to use microsoft word but I don't have that program on my computer and would have to buy it. Is there another way I can see the list? Am I an idiot?

Louise De Masi

Hi Susan, I've just uploaded a pdf file of the supplies list under all the other files on the Rose Robin here. Let me know if you can open that one ok. Thanks. 💕

Susan Turney

I thought I answered but I don’t see it. Yes, the pdf file is perfect. Will you be doing that on the other tutorials? Love your work!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Susan. Yes I will add a pdf copy to the other older tutorials I have here and I'll do it on any going forward now. If I forget, just send me a message to remind me. 💜

Susan Turney

Thank you so much! Amazon, here I come!😄🖌

Susan Turney

I hate to even write because I know you're having internet problems. I still can't get a list of colors I need on any of the tutorials except the Rose Robin. Is it something I'm doing that I can't get the .docx ? I'm not the brightest computer person so if there's something I can do it would be so much easier.

Louise De Masi

Hi Susan, I finally have internet today! Hooray! It's very slow but at least I have it. It came back on yesterday around 5.00pm. I uploaded a 10 minute private video to YouTube and it took 15 hours to upload. Normally a video that size would take about 20 minutes so it's incredibly frustrating. I've just finished uploading all of the pdf supplies lists to the tutorials for you. Let me know if I missed any ( I don't think I did but you never know 🤷🏼‍♀️). I'll try to remember to always upload a pdf copy on future tutorials. Send me a reminder if I ever forget. Have fun. Thanks 💜.

Brian

Please help. I printed the sketch. Brand new here just joined My print out is tiny. Can you about tell me what size the bird should be. Hope this isn’t a crazy question. Ps I love birds and your work

Louise De Masi

Hi Brian, Welcome! I sent you a message. My robin was painted on paper 25cm by 35cm (9.8” by 13.7”). So the robin itself was smaller than that. If you need exact measurements of the robin I'll have to go an get it and measure it. Let me know if you need more help.

Brian

I can print the sketch bigger. I still don’t know how big this little guy should be. I’m on a block cold pressed

Louise De Masi

The robin itself is 9 inches in length from the top of its head to the tip of its tail. It's just over 3 inches in width at its widest point. If you measure from its back across to its feet on the branch- it's about 4 inches. The file I uploaded with the line drawing on it was 13.7" by 9.8"- so I'm not sure why it's printing really small for you.

Brian

I think my pc is crazy

Just finished the little rose robin. Such a cute bird. I learned so much from your tutorial. Thank you!

Sumathi Vikram

Hello Louise, is there a way to make permanent magenta by mixing colors ? All art stores are out of this shade and I really want to paint this Robin without waiting 3 days for Amazon to deliver !!! Thanks !:-)

Louise De Masi

Hi Sumathi, That's a tough question for me because I'm not much of a mixer 🥴. I had a quick look online and the pigment number for Permanent Magenta is PV19. Daniel Smith's Quinacridone Violet also has the pigment number PV19. If you don't have that the only thing I can suggest is try mixing a little blue into a pink that you do have. I think Permanent Rose also has pigment PV19.

Sumathi Vikram

Thank you for responding back to me . I will try that . 😊🙏🏽

This is my very first tutorial that I did following your tutorial. It took me a while to finish and divided into 3 parts- but I’m glad I sticked through! Appreciate it!!

Frieda Bleier

I very much enjoyed the tutotial of the Red Robin. Your painiting of the bird lovely. I especially appreciate how you walk us through each step. I am going to give it a go and hopefully it will come out OK.

Kirstin Santos

I painted Rose Robin all day yesterday while recovering from bone graft oral surgery…great distraction from pain and discomfort, and because I couldn’t really do anything else, I was able to go slowly, be patient, take a break when needed, and by golly, I was really pleased with the result. I enjoyed this tutorial so much, Louise! I so appreciate all the detail you offer in your tutorials, and I’m finding that I like the the detailed work very much. Many thanks for your offerings, Louise!

Louise De Masi

I'm sorry you're in pain and discomfort Kirstin. I hope you get well again soon. That's so good that you had some success with it and it distracted you. My pleasure and thank you! 💕
