Hi everyone,

This is a watercolour butterfly tutorial for you. It's one of the subjects that some of you suggested. I have a list on my computer where I've kept all of the painting subjects that you have requested and I'll continue to work my way through them. I have a Bluebird painted that I will make a tutorial on and I also want to start painting a Sea Turtle this week. I have a lot of flowers that I want to get to as well. So much to do!

I hope you enjoy this little Butterfly. You can paint this one with or without the background and you could also change the colours on the butterfly without too much difficulty. Just use the grey in the shadows and then choose a different colour to paint the patterning and veins on the wings. All of the files you need are listed below.

The photo of the butterfly came from Pixabay. I tweaked the colors slightly in Photoshop before I painted it.

Enjoy!

Lynn Muster

Is it Phthalo blue red shade or green shade?

Louise De Masi

Hi Lynn, It's Phthalo Blue green shade. Thank you for pointing that out to me. I've just updated the supplies list.

Lynn Muster

Yay, I guessed right!! 😝

Laurel

Oh I love this!!

Yolonde

I like the way you have tweaked the colour of the butterfly - I forget to think that that is something I can do :-)

ANNE-MARIE BOND

Hi Louise. It's me from youtube. I told you I would join you lol. Now, first impression... I immediately went to the butterfly (so could we have more please haha)… but my first impression is that you have an image showing the final painting!!! THANK YOU!!! Not many other paterons do this and it's important to glance at what we are achieving and can print it and have as reference throughout.

Louise De Masi

Hi Anne-Marie, welcome and thank you! I'm so glad you're here. Lol.. the final image is a must so you can paint yours. I couldn't imagine painting from a tutorial if I had no final painting to look at while I did it. 💜

Yolonde

I enjoyed doing the butterfly. Thank you for doing a tutorial on insects :-). I love how you break down the complex into the simple (like the shading on the butterfly wing). The backgrounds are always challenging for me but I had a crack at it anyway. Fantastic as always.

Louise De Masi

I just saw your butterfly Yolonde, it's gorgeous! Really well done 💕.

Yolonde

Thank you for all your help Louise.

Louise De Masi

Hi Claire, That's good news. Thank you! You can email me a photo of Franky. I'd love to see him ...... ldemasi@iprimus.com.au 💜
