I'm glad it wasn't just me who got tired while painting in the feathers! This is the largest painting I've attempted so far, and it's coming along nicely. Of course, I always see something I'm not happy with. Yet, I've made a lot of progress, so I'm not complaining!

Hi Louise, I’m in the middle of painting the macaw. I find doing the feathers a bit challenging. I’m still learning. My niece has a blue and yellow macaw and her father wants me to paint one for him. I guess by then, I’ll be good at it. I’m enjoying painting this one.

Hi Kathy, how beautiful to have a Macaw. Take your time with the feathers. I've put a short technique video on YouTube that might be helpful to you with the feather painting. It's here: https://youtu.be/BPN-_Tr5Yv4 <<<< Just copy and paste that link into your browser to see it.

I love the idea of the index Louise! That will help a lot.

Just beautiful ❤️ negative painting looks so easy, but i bet it's not... Thank you for this great class.

Louise De Masi

Hi Michelle, Welcome! Thank you very much. I hope the painting is going well. 💙

Hi Louise, really looking forward to starting this guy. I wasn’t able to get a brown ochre. Our store doesn’t even list it as a Winsor Newton color. Could you suggest a substitute ? Also is the ultramarine blue just that or a shade? I found a green shade but I’m not sure if that will work. I had the same problem with the Winsor blue for the Bluebird. There was a red or a green shade. Not sure which one is best. Your help is appreciated!

Louise De Masi

Hi Jacqueline, I wish there was a place here on Patreon where patrons could upload photos but there isn't. You can email me a photo to ldemasi@iprimus.com.au and I can have a look at it.

Louise De Masi

Hi Jeannie, I'm so sorry I missed this message. I get a lot of messages and this one fell through the cracks....sorry. I have the Winsor Blue red shade. The Ultramarine - you can use the green shade or French Ultramarine. Sorry I need to remember to be more specific. I don't place a lot of importance in matching exact colours. It's more important to get the colour value (lightness and darkness) right rather than the colour itself. A substitute for Brown Ochre- you could use Burnt Sienna or any earthy brown colour. It's only the yellow parts so you don't need much.

Well after the last two months packing to move and then moving, settling into the new home, I have finally finished the Macaw. This is my first tutorial with you and I'm pretty pleased with it. Now I just have to work how to put the picture up here.

Joan De Bruyn

I have painted the first layer and now painting the feathers, this is a great tutorial Louise. Thank you. I will post on your Facebook page when I have finished it, it’s not as good as yours of course but I have learnt a lot about negative painting and hubby is telling me it is beautiful. I am heavy handed with the paint so must learn to go lighter. I’m used to acrylic paints.

Louise De Masi

I'm glad you are enjoying it Joan. Take your time and take lots of breaks from it. I get tired when I paint in watercolour so I leave it every half hour or so to do something else, even if it's only for ten minutes or so.

I love this tutorial! What kind of gom do you use? When i use my gom, i remove the painting...

Louise De Masi

Hi Margreet, thank you! I'm not sure what you man by gom. Do you mean the gummed tape? It's water activated tape that I buy from art supplies shops. When I take my painting off the gator board I have to cut it off with a knife. Then I remove the gummed tape from the board by soaking the board in water.

Margreet Kats

I’m sorry, I mean the eraser to remove the pencil lines. When I use my own, i remove the paint.

Manon Darveau

Can’t wait to paint this once . It’s beautiful thank you Louise!
