Hi everyone,

Here is Part 1 of the Cardinal Tutorial. Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/30993576

All the files you need are listed below. I've included a photo of my finished painting along with 2 scans of the finished painting. One of the scans has the background splash and the other one doesn't. I included the photo as well because you can see the colours on the Cardinal better.

I do a small amount of negative painting on the feathers in this tutorial and I mentioned that I have a video on YouTube that goes into this in more detail so here is the link: https://youtu.be/BPN-_Tr5Yv4

I hope you enjoy the tutorial and I'm looking forward to seeing your paintings.

I've provided the link for you to download the refernce photo. It's on the Supplies List.

Ciska, I use the Silver Brush Black Velvet brushes all the time - they are my "go to" brushes and I LOVE them! Can't wait to try them out on this cardinal!

Marianne Bindemanis

I was wondering where l can buy watercolour board from and new brushes you are using, love your tutorials

Louise De Masi

Hi Marianne, The watercolour boards have been getting harder and harder to buy. I used to get mine from an art supply store in Sydney but they no longer have any. They told me that the Australian wholesaler that imports them isn’t keeping them anymore. Other students have been looking for them overseas and nobody seems to be able to find them. I’ve reached out to Arches twice now and I’ve asked them if they are no longer manufacturing it and they haven’t bothered to answer me. I have quite a few boards here at home that I’m working my way through, that's why you see me using them in the tutorials. There is no need for me to stretch them and they are ready to go when I am. I know Daler Rowney make a watercolour board and also there is a board called Cresent that might be worth trying instead. I haven’t tried these other boards but I will as soon as I can. Daler Rowney boards are here: http://www.daler-rowney.com/content/watercolour-boards Here is the Crescent board https://www.dickblick.com/products/crescent-watercolor-boards/ I'm not sure how they compare to the Arches watercolour board. The Black Silver Velvet brushes you can buy in a lot of places. Do a quick Google search and you'll see where you can get them. Thank you!

Marianne Bindemanis

Thank you Louise for your reply , l will start doing some searches 😀

Zarah McIntosh

The supplies list for the Cardinal in pdf is missing... but the Bluebird supplies list is on this one.

Louise De Masi

Thanks for letting me know Zarah. I'll check it all now.

Louise De Masi

Fixed. Thanks again for letting me know Zarah. It must have been a senior moment I was having. 😝

Patti Kehl

Dear Louise, I know you are very busy but I wonder if you have ever painted a female cardinal. If so, do you recall the colors you used? Thanks a bunch!! : ) Patti

Louise De Masi

Hi Patti, I did paint one about 5 years ago. I can't remember what I used but I'm thinking- Buff Titanium by Daniel Smith is a good overall base color for the body and while its wet drop in Sepia or Vandyke Brown or Burnt Umber in the darker areas and maybe a yellow on the sunlit lighter areas. Any bright warm red like Scarlet Lake or cadmium red could be used for the red markings.

Patti Kehl

You are amazing! thank you so much : )

Annabelle Zamora

I just love to see and to learn from this cardinal video, this is my first look ar your patreon and I´m so excited about what I ´m already learning

Louise De Masi

Karin Stanbery

Hi Louise, I am having a hard time ...when I drop in the yellow I get blossoms. I’m using arches 140 pound paper. Any advice please?

Louise De Masi

Hi Karin, You'll get blooms or blossoms when you disturb pigment that is starting to dry. If you drop water or paint onto paint that is drying it pushes the drying pigment away causing those shapes to occur. If you don't want them you need to make sure the paint on the paper is still nice and wet and shiny before you drop any more colour in. I have a video here where I demonstrate them https://www.patreon.com/posts/30820081

Nettie Moss

Hi Louise - just watched part one of this tutorial: fascinating to see how you develop the colours and shadings. I was interested to see you using the Silver brushes and wondered if you ever use them nowadays as I can't recall seeing them in your more recent tutorials.

Louise De Masi

Hi Nettie, thank you. As far as synthetic brushes go I think the Silver black velvet brushes are quite good although I don't have a set of them- just two. I mainly use my Maestros because I am used to them now and I want to try to keep the consistency going with the tutorials. I don't want to confuse people by switching brushes all the time. You might see me try a different brush from time to time though.

Nettie Moss

Yes, that's fair enough - I understand. I am happy though that you like some of the synthetics and they look good when you use them - but expect that would happen with any brush you'd use! Many thanks for taking time to answer my questions.
