Hi everyone,

Here is a video that might help you if you struggle understanding how wet your paper should be. There are varying degrees of 'wetness' and knowing how to handle each stage is crucial when you paint with watercolour.

I hope it helps you understand this concept better.

I give you so much credit as an artist and teacher. I’m coming into this several years after you created this video, and I cannot believe all that you’ve continued to create. I cannot tell you how valuable this kind of content is. Thank you.

Louise De Masi

I'm so glad it is helps Anne. Thank you very much for you kind message. ❤️

Excellent demo! I'm a beginner and your ability to teach and demonstrate is very helpful!

Bev Witts

Hi Louise one important lesson that I have learnt is not all watercolour paper reacts the same when wet …some that I am using actually needs a minute or two to be absorbed and others I can use almost straight away. This can be tricky ..

Lily

Hello Louise,

Lily

Do you have the tutorial for the Chrysanthemum? It is beautiful, I will like to try it but I can't find it. Thank you!

Lily

Thank you! I love your videos and paintings. You are a very talented artist and teacher!

Jeff Kim

Super helpful and informative! Thanks so much.

Louise De Masi

Oh thank you Michelle! I got your hug. It was lovely and it was needed 💕. I feel very privileged to have a platform like this and YouTube where I can share what I know and it's very kind of you to let me know it's helping. It picks me up when I get messages like this so thank you very much. I'll keep learning and growing myself and I'll keep sharing my journey. 😘

Kathleen Staley

I really appreciate this beginner tutorial. I realized after taking a few lessons that I didn't really understand what people were telling me. I didn't understand what a soft Edge was. Thanks so much for these beginner basic explaintions. Sometimes I've gone into classes and felt like everyone was speaking Latin😀

Marilyn bettker

Thank you a million times over. I am learning so much from you.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Kathleen! I'm glad they're helping and I totally agree with you about the 'technical terms' sounding like latin. 😝

Tina Shen

You are a really fantastic art teacher! Lots of useful and practical skills sharing with us! Your great teaching is changing my life! Many thanks! Love you!

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much Tina! That's so wonderful to know. 😘

Marijke de Boer

This has been very helpful - and you teach very clear and showing great examples. I also like that you say in the end that it needs some time to learn this .... yes I do need time and it is nice to know that it needs time so I do not blame myself for not getting it right straight away! So I can take a breath and say to myself this was a great learning process, next time it will be a little better still. Thank you!!

Lydia Shemain

Louise, thank you for this tutorial, priceless instruction. Often wondered how you did the background on the Chrysanthemum, now I know and thank you for generously sharing every detail.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Marijke! It takes so much practice to really understand how to paint in watercolour. I doubt I'll ever truly master it but I'll have a lot of fun trying.

Lorena

I commend you for your insight and also for your great organizational and teaching skills by using several former tutorials to reinforse techniques and tips. I love your teaching method. Thanks.

Kylie

So beautifully explained and demonstrated. Thank you Louise, this is very helpful information.

Bronwyn bossley

Good morning a great tutorial helps me a lot. I have decided to make my paintings A3 because I am a little heavy handed with my paint and if I go larger and wetter I seem to have a bit more control of my colour.

Bronwyn bossley

Thank you again you are a great teacher and explain all the processes so well. Lots of loving thoughts Bronny

Louise De Masi

Hi Bronny. That sounds like a good idea and I hope it helps you.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Bronny- Sending them right back to you. 💕

Lydia Shemain

Louise, as a beginner I’m struggling with backgrounds. Absolutely love your backgrounds — so soft, the colours just blend so magically together. What do you mean when you say the paint should be watery — sorry for sounding dumb — do you mean the consistency of the paint — more water and less pigment or does it have a fair amount of pigment. My colours seem to look washed out. Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Lydia. Generally, because I don't mix many colours (other than grey) when I paint I'll do one of two things. The first: When I want a paler colour I'll use water that has some pigment mixed into it (watery paint). I can adjust that watery paint by putting more pigment into it. So it can be pale but I can also make it darker. The second: When I want the most pigment (darkest colour) I'll wipe a wet brush over the pigment itself. So my darkest colour comes from wiping my brush over the pigment. All the other colour values I get from the watery paint. You can also glaze layer upon layer to deepen colours. Most of the time one layer of watery paint isn't enough. Watch part 1 of the dragonflies tutorial. At about the 4 minute mark I put some paint on my palette and then I show what I mean by watery paint.

Lydia Shemain

Thank you for your swift response Louise.

Joel Medalle

Awesome tutorial, thank you very much L!

Sue Kostick

Just joined your channel and am excited to start painting. Thank you for all your hard work! You can see where I am starting by following my instagram @suebkostick. Ill keep posting,,,, Thank you so much

Rowena Corlett

thanks for this tutorial Louise - its really helped me understand how important the degree of wetness of my paper is. I think sometimes I have run into trouble because my paper is still a bit damp and now I understand how important it is to wait for it to be fully dry. Many thanks

Tracey Holden

I'm so happy you recommended I watch this video! I realized where I was doing it wrong and essentially I had reversed what I felt wet paper was vs damp. This video is the best I have watched regarding explaining how much water to use and when. Thank you so much! I will bookmark this tutorial and keep watch it when I need help. You are an excellent teacher and I'm so pleased you have taken the time to help me. Much love and gratitude.

Louise De Masi

That's really good to know. Thank you Tracey. I'm glad it helped you. 💕

Laura B Camp

Hi Louise! I think this is what's very hardest for me--wetness vs. dampness. My paper never seems to stay damp as long as yours. I'm using Strathmore cold press 400 series. Is this high quality enough? Very helpful video, by the way. Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Laura, Thank you. I'm glad it was helpful. I have only ever tried Strathmore paper once so I'm not too sure about it. I bought a Strathmore visual diary last year. I painted on it for 5 minutes and discarded it. I will keep the diary for my grandchildren. It was awful to paint on. I bought it to do little studies in it but I can't use it. I just looked up Strathmore 400 paper and it said it was their intermediate paper so I'd say that is why you might be having difficulty with it. You want 100% cotton paper - I don't know if it's cotton or wood pulp that are you are using. If it is wood pulp paper that you are using, you'll see the difference as soon as you start using cotton paper. I sometimes use Saunders Waterford paper to do studies on. It's quite good to learn on and I find it not as expensive as the higher quality papers.

Betty Johnson

Hi, Louise. I'm getting ready to do the Chrysanthemum on the cradleboard. I was wondering if you had a larger outline drawing of it. The small one seems to be a bit small for the cradleboard.

Louise De Masi

Hi Betty, I've just uploaded an A3 version of the line drawing to Skillshare. There's a left half and a right half so you can print them on two pages and tape them together. It's on the 'projects and resources' page right down the bottom of all the files. Log into Skillshare through your internet browser to see them.

Hanna

I just joined the group here and watched this video and wow… great info! Based on all the videos I’ll spend the rest of my life here :)

Louise De Masi

Lol....I'm glad it was helpful to you Hanna 😂. Thank you!

Alana Belcon

Just joined after loving your videos on youtube. Is there a full tutorial on how to paint the chrysanthemum in this video?

Louise De Masi

Hi Alana, Welcome. This chrysanthemum is on Skillshare. I like to keep the tutorials on Skillshare and Patreon different because I have a lot of patrons who are also on Skillshare. I've just sent you a message with tutorial index links. You'll find all of the tutorials I have on patreon on the indexes. Thanks.

Alana Belcon

Thanks Louise! I have a Skillshare account so I'll definitely check out the chrysanthemum there! <3
