Update 28 March 2023: Some of the colours listed here I rarely use. When I paint now I try to limit my palette as much as I can and mix colours more often. I would rarely use Winsor Orange, Burnt Umber, Permanent Mauve, Ultramarine Violet, Winsor Violet, Perylene Green and Olive Green.

Hi everyone,

Here's a quick video about my new watercolour palette. I'm enjoying using it. The wells are deeper than what I'm used to but that's just a case of getting used to them. I love how it spins on the lazy susan and the mixing plate in the middle comes out for cleaning which is great. Someone suggested that I should fill up the wells at the top with paint so that I could still squirt them with water rather than using a pipette, which I think is a good idea.

To clarify: When the paint well is only half full, like how I put the paint in, there is space around the paint that fills up with water (because of the ridge). If I fill up that space with paint, I let it harden and then I squirt it with water, there is no room for the water to sit. It will just run off the paint down into the well the way it does on my little porcelain/ceramic palette.

These are the colours I put in it - all from Winsor & Newton:

Burnt Umber

Sepia

Scarlet Lake

Alizarin Crimson

Permanent Rose

Permanent Magenta

Permanent Mauve

Ultamarine Violet

Winsor Violet

Paynes Grey

Indigo

French Ultramarine

Winsor Blue (red shade)

Phthalo Turquoise

Cerulean Blue

Perylene Green

Sap Green

Olive Green

In other news, I have internet again! After a week of on again, off again internet access (and then when we did have it, it was so slow that there was no point in using it), it's good to be back online. I don't have to use the data on my phone anymore. I uploaded this ten minute video to YouTube when it was really slow and it took 15 hours to upload. Normally a video this size takes about 20 minutes or so (frustrating to say the least).

I've also completed the Gardenia painting and I'm currently working on the tutorial. I hope to have it ready for you next week 🤞🏻.

Happy painting.

Loren Patafta

Louise do you still love this palette? Did you find ceramic mixing wells that fit? Do the plastic mixing wells stain?

Louise De Masi

Hi Loren. I still use it but I have found that the wells are a little deep. The plastic mixing wells stain as well. It's too large for me to film with. My magic arm that holds my phone over the palette isn't long enough so I don't use this palette when I film the tutorials.

Loren Patafta

oh Louise thanks for much for letting me know and getting back to me so quickly. That's a great help. I think this is going to be too big and I really love ceramic palettes like you. I also love the slopping wells. I completely agree with how you use the slopping wells, so do I. I have the small one that you have but I wanted something a bit bigger!!

Water

Hi Louise, Would you use this list of Watercolors and in this order in your John Pike Palette , or would you use the other list of ( your most often used colors) in the Pike palette

Louise De Masi

Hi, I really need to update this list because I no longer use a lot of the colours. When I set my John Pike palette up I put complementary colours opposite each other. I have DS- Amethyst Genuine (I don't use it often) Opposite Hookers Green. Winsor Violet opposite Sap Green, Perm Rose opposite Cerulean Blue, Scarket Lake opposite Antwerp Blue, Burnt Sienna opposite French Ultra, DS Pyrolle Orange opposite Cobalt Blue and DS Azo Yellow opposite Ultramarine Violet. A lot of those colours I don't use much anymore either. I mix my own greens and violets now. I will make a more up to date video about different ways to set up palettes- hopefully this year.

Water

Well, that was quick! ... you must have been anticipating my question ;) Thanks for this info - I seem to be managing so far without setting up the John Pike Palette so I might just wait until you release a video on this subject. Thanks for taking the time to respond

Jean

Hi Louise, as this is an older video, would you say that these colors you chose would still be your choices or have you changed your druthers?

Louise De Masi

Hi Jean, I have definitely changed my colour choices. I mix more now- greens, violets, oranges etc. I just put an update notice at the top of the post. If you are just starting out with watercolour and don't know what to buy, watch this video if you haven't already - https://www.patreon.com/posts/75109061 I plan to make a video this year about different ways of setting up a palette.

Jean

Wonderful, thank you!

Kelle Luoma

Louise, you aren't painting for yourself anymore, just for the classes?

Kelle Luoma

The Kookabura is lovely by the way. :)

Louise De Masi

I don't get any time now Kelle 😕 but that's ok because I'm grateful that I have all of you 😘. Yesterday afternoon around 4.00 I finished the Gardenia painting and then I came upstairs to my computer to continue working on the tutorial but I couldn't focus on the editing so I told myself I needed a break. I went back downstairs and spent about half an hour working on the little Kookaburra (in this video) before Dom got home. It was really nice to do that even if it was just for half an hour - just to paint for no other reason than pleasure.

Victoria Scrooby

Wow that palette is amazing! Also happy Halloween 🦇 🎃 🍬

Louise De Masi

Thanks Victoria. Happy Halloween to you! I didn't realise it was Halloween. 🤭🎃🦇

Terri H.

Hey Louise, I’m a little confused by what you wrote in your comments under the video. You said someone suggested that you put the paint at the top of the well so that you could still squirt your paint and not use a pipette. In the video you said you didn’t like how the paint stayed wet at the top of the well because of the ridge and that’s why you used the pipette. Would you please clarify? Thanks!💕

Louise De Masi

When the paint well is only half full like how I put the paint in, there is space around the paint that fills up with water (because of the ridge). If I fill up that space with paint, I let it harden and then I squirt it with water, there is no room for the water to sit. It will just run off the paint down into the well the way it does on my little porcelain/ceramic palette. I hope that makes sense. 😊

Terri H.

Ahhh!!! Now I get it! That makes sense. It’s getting a little late here and my brain must be ready for bed! Thanks for explaining!

Kathy Wilden

I just love your new palette. It’s amazing . You must be so pleased with it. I’m thinking of getting one for myself. Today I’m starting on the Himalayan poppies that I found on pmp.com. Hope it turns out good. Have fun with your new palette!

Mark Hodgetts

An faster alternative to the small pipette that you used would be to buy a washbottle ( plastic with swan neck as used in laboratories). They are just a couple of pounds, on-line, in the UK.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Kathy. Good luck with the poppies. I'm sure they'll be beautiful.

Chantal NUGUES-PERRIN

Hi Louise, about the ridge between the 2 areas, do you think it could be possible to make a v- dent in each one or the ridges with a kind of an electric saw, that is if the ridge is not hollow at the back 🤗🤗

Louise De Masi

Thanks for the link Becky. I think Robert also sells the ceramic plates for the centre. Someone messaged me and told me thay were on Amazon as well.

Louise De Masi

I'm not sure Chantal, that's not a bad idea. Knowing my luck though I'd crack the whole thing. I think what I'll do is fill the paint area up with more paint so there's no gap around it. Then I can refresh the paint with the squirty bottle.

cherie

It looks like a fantastic palette. Love the sloping wells - I tried them out after seeing you use them and I absolutely couldn't go back now! Let us know how the palette goes in practice with the full wells. Perhaps there's an option to remove the ridge from the design if it impedes the water run-off. Thanks for your work in reaching out to Robax - it's great that they're able to work with artists to create great tools.

Tricia Commons

By the way, did you find a vendor who sells Arches watercolor paper that is already stretched in a padded board? Blick.com carries it online.💖

Tricia Commons

opps... it is dickblick.com Arches 50% off

Shelly Solle

I'm so excited to get this palette. I've got it on the Santa list. I'm tired of washing left over paint down the drain so I can reuse my deep well palette.

Louise De Masi

I hope Santa brings you one! I'm enjoying using mine. The spinning stand is excellent. 💜

Janicce Chin

Hi, I just joined and I was wondering if there are any colours you usually use that you would recommend I get. Thanks.

Shelly Solle

Louise, does the plastic stain on your new palette? I started to be a bit panicked over that part.

Louise De Masi

The palette now comes with plastic well liners that you can pop into the wells. You can also buy a ceramic mixing plate to fit into the centre. So far it's ok but I know it will stain eventually.

Brenda Cholin

Hi Louise. I loved your video on the palette and put it on my Christmas wish list. My hubby has ordered it for me and I will have it in a couple more days. I am super excited about it. Thanks for the review on it.

Shelly Solle

Update ~. I absolutely love my palette. It makes painting a joy. I’ve sold so many to my friends....I should contact Robax for a commission. 😁

Katherine Hatzis

Hi Louise, I have been thinking of buying your round palette, but it is on the pricey side. In your opinion is it worth it?

Louise De Masi

Hi Katherine. I love mine. If you do a lot of painting and you have a designated area that has plenty of room for you to paint - yes it's a great palette. It takes up a lot of room so you need space to sit it somewhere. I love it because of the lazy susan. I can spin it around when I need different colours and I like the fact that it has a lid so I can cover my paints to keep the dust off them. The sloping wells are good but I find they are a little deep but that's not too much of a burden though. Other than that I'm happy with mine.

Karen Morris

Hi Louise. I just joined and I’m not sure if you look back on comments on your tutorials that you posted this long ago. I bought this palette after seeing yours. I bought the replaceable wells and love being able to switch out my paints for special projects. I always use Masters Brush Cleaner on my plastic palettes. I think I saw the recommendation on Jane Blundell’s website. It takes all the stains off, even Phalo, and I feel like a good coat of it prevents the plastic from staining for a very long time. Love your painting, Louise and I’m absolutely stunned at all the amazing tutorials you’ve posted hereon. I can’t imagine how much work it’s been for you. Saying thank you doesn’t begin to say enough.

Louise De Masi

Hi Gilbert, Welcome again! Thank you very much for the tip. I'll have to get some of that. I have lots of plastic palettes that need a good clean. Thank you very much for your kind message.

Carlotta Saylor

Do you use the plastic well inserts for each color or just directly into the molded wells?

Louise De Masi

Robert sent me the palette to try before he went ahead and made more. When he sent it to me he didn't have the inserts made so I had to fill it without them. He's since sent me the inserts but because it's full of paint I haven't been able to use them. I like the idea of the inserts because you can move them and place them where you want them and it makes the palette easier to clean.

Mary Jacobson

Hi Louise, I just joined. Love your videos You are a wonderful artist. Thanks for sharing with us back in the USA.

Sue Kostick

Hi Louise = Sue the newbie again :) Do you use sandpaper to rough up the surface at all?

Louise De Masi

Hi Sue, I'm not sure what you mean.... do you mean rough up the surface of the palette?

Sue Kostick

Yes because I heard paint slides on the plastic and bubbles up and it doesn’t stick very well I guess people use sandpaper on the plastic first so I wondered if you had that issue

Louise De Masi

I see - I hadn't heard that. Sometimes when the paint is a bit more liquid it will slip down the sloping wells on other palettes. This one has little ridges to stop that from happening. All I need to do now is fill the paint up more.

Sherie McManaman

Louise, are you still using and enjoying the Robax palette? I’ve been experimenting with sloping wells and have found they do help me with my water control and pigment control. Just wondering if the Robax is still your go-to palette. Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Sherie, yes I still use it. I love it. I find it's a bit large to fit on camera when I'm filming a tutorial so I'll sometimes use a smaller plate or palette for that but I do still use it all the time. I'd like to get a ceramic plate in the middle for mixing though.

Sherie McManaman

Thanks! I’m thinking about getting one. Just need to measure and see if it will work with my desk space. Loving your tutorials!

Malisa Phillips

Do you use any other brand of paints? Like Daniel Smith or Sennelier or M Graham?

Louise De Masi

Hi Mailsa, I use Daniel Smith and I have some Schmincke colours as well. I've never tried Sennelier or M Graham. I've not seen them in the stores over here. I'd like to try them though.

Nancy Johnson

Does anyone have a suggestions for a sloped well portable palette? I've attempted it on a few plastic ones by Meeden but my paint always falls off. I am trying not to be as heavy handed with my paint and I think the slanted well will help.

Andrea Flemming

Hi Louise and all :) Are these the colors that are mostly used in the tutorials? Or is there another list I don't see at the moment? I must order the colors and want to buy most of them together. So I don't have so many shipping costs.

Andrea Flemming

Thank you so much, Louise 💕 now I can spoil my housekeeping money 😉😄

Linda

That was great. Thanks for sharing, Louise. I’m still sorting out palettes so this was very helpful.

Becky

HM. the photo I wanted to share will have to be sent to you on Skillshare. Sorry.

Saleemah Ahamed

Hi Louise - thanks for the detail video. Do you still use the carousel palette? I’ve noticed in recent videos that you use a flat palette with a large mixing area.

Louise De Masi

I found that the round palette is too large to try and film with. Also the mixing area isn't large enough so I use my John Pike Big Well palette when filming for tutorials.
