Hi everyone,

I've had a few people mention they are having difficulties using salt to create texture. I made a video on YouTube a while ago that explains this technique. I thought I'd post it here so you can refer to it if you need to.

Success with salt is all in the timing. If you put it on when the paper is too wet not much will happen and similarly if you wait too long to put the salt on not much is going to happen. I find sometimes it works really well for me and other times I'm disappointed with the result. So don't be too upset with yourself if it doesn't always work the way you want it to. Keep practicing!

I'll show you how to use salt to add beautiful textural qualities to your watercolour paintings. Subscribe to my channel: https://bit.ly/2Jz771z Using salt in your watercolour painting can create some beautiful effects that will enhance your paintings. In this video I demonstrate how to apply salt to your watercolour painting and I show you some examples of where I have used it in my own paintings. #watercolor #watercolour #louisedemasi I've just opened an account on Patreon. I painted the salt washes on Arches hot press paper using Winsor & Newton's Winsor Violet. The first salt I used was ordinary table salt. The second salt I used was course sea salt that I put in my grinder for table use. If you have't tried this technique before, practice on some scrap paper first. __________________ Classes/tutorials mentioned in this video: Skillshare Fox class: http://skl.sh/2qp1n0G Barn Owl // Part 1// on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHZvEZwwFlo&t=7s Barn Owl // Part 2 // on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSVzco66arU&t=10s __________________ Archival Prints of paintings shown in video: Grey Fantail 1 : https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/628182869/grey-fantail-print-of-watercolour?ga_search_query=Fantail&ref=shop_items_search_9 Barn Owl : https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/680075098/barn-owl-print-of-watercolor-painting-a3?ref=shop_home_active_9 Magpies: https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/657203305/magpie-watercolour-painting-print?ref=shop_home_active_81 Grey Fantail 2: https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/650213490/grey-fantail-print-of-watercolour?ref=shop_home_active_69 Kookaburra : https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/598813880/kookaburra-watercolour-painting-print-a4?ga_search_query=kookaburra&ref=shop_items_search_11 Fox: https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/528950929/fox-print-of-watercolor-painting-a3?ga_search_query=fox&ref=shop_items_search_11 Wren: https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/524180585/wren-print-of-watercolor-painting-a3?ga_search_query=wren&ref=shop_items_search_40 Blue Faced Honeyeater: https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/605628688/blue-faced-honeyeater-watercolour?ga_search_query=honeyeater&ref=shop_items_search_4 __________________ Online Classes I have more online watercolour classes if you're interested in learning how to use this beautiful medium. 4 more new classes coming this year - 2019.

Cassandra Kinlyside

Also with the sea salt I found you need to grind it into smaller pieces otherwise it won’t work.

Claire

Practice the salt technique takes a few goes to get timing right once you get it though it has great results. I practiced on all sorts of splashy pairings of galaxies etc

Shelly Solle

In the video she used course sea salt just fine.

Cassandra Kinlyside

Shelly Solle I used the really big chunks and they just would not work at all. I don’t know why no matter what I did. As soon as I made it smaller pieces it worked fine. Might’ve been the paper I was using.

Cecilia Nuyianes

I am loving the beginner tips!☺️ They are very helpful. I watch them a few times. I watch them ...I learn ...I paint...Incorporate a technique... and then maybe need to watch again.... Maybe something good to add to your index. By the way, I love your index it works well!

Cecilia Nuyianes

Enjoyed seeing all your samples...Beautiful!!

Kimberly

Love your cute little birds! Thanks for sharing your paintings! They are fabulous!

Kimberly

I actually love the little birds that looks like animal prints!

Linda Pahl

I so enjoyed the sampling of a few of the paintings in your portfolio -- your aesthetic appeals to me: visually peaceful and quietly engaging subjects.

Linda Pahl

Love the blooper at the end! "Really?!" LOL!

TeresaLaLana

Hi I am new to your patreon, and I am finding it sooo interesting! I hope I will manage to make some nice paintings, but in any case I have already learn a lot with this video! All your watercolours are truly amaizing! Love your birds!

Nan Schifris

I’ve always been disappointed in the results of salt and now I know why: I’ve applied it too early. I can’t wait to try the technique again now that you’ve shown me how wet the paper should be when adding the salt. The results are so wonderful! Thanks for the clear explanations & close-up video..

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Nan. I have success with it sometimes and other times not so much. Practice on some scrap paper until you get to understand the wetness.

Becky

The ending was priceless! Wow, I'd love to learn to paint that flamingo! So very amazing!!!

Louise De Masi

Lol...thanks Becky. A Flamingo is on my subject list. 😝

Jana Bailey

You are precious! Funny ending! Love all your examples!

Guillermo Lopez Vizoso

What a nice work, Louise! I find it very stimulating and inspiring...

Patti Kehl

You have made my night! I have greatly enjoyed watching your inspiring videos!! and the sweet endings where real life meets - super star! is just the frosting on the cake!! thank you for sharing both your incredible talent and your everyday life struggles : )

Louise De Masi

Lol...thank you Patti for your kind messages. I'm sitting here at my computer checking over my next tutorial. Your messages have been a welcome distraction for me. I'm glad you enjoyed them. 😘

Lori

Hi Louise, I am new to your Patreon page (I support Home Free, so I knew about Patreon from that) I fell in love with your style of teaching, your style of painting, and most of all your amazing talent!!! I am brand new to watercolor and am learning so much because of you! I've seen salt used before as salt water to make blooms, but never like you have done. I have a question. When do you decide to use table salt and when do you decide to use course salt? Again, thanks for sharing your talent with us!!!!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Lori! I'll use table salt if I want subtle texture that's not too bold - say on a smaller painting of a bird. If I want to really get in there and get some big bold shapes I'll use the course salt - usually on a larger painting.

Lori

Thanks, Louise. One more question. I live in Arizona which is hot and very dry. (43.3 C) It seems like the rock salt is not doing much. Could it be that my wash dries way too quickly here in the summer? Should I try when it is wetter? Thanks again. I just love your teaching style so very much. I would love to see you paint a tutorial of a pug!

Louise De Masi

Hi Lori, It's all to do with the timing of the wetness of the paper. if you put it on too quickly there's too much water and if you put it on too late- it's too dry. All you can do is experiment a few times on scrap paper until you can see how wet the paper should be. 43 degrees is really hot weather so the paper will dry very quickly. Sometimes I have great success with it and other times it can be a fizzer 👎🏻.
