Hi everyone,

I've had a few people ask me recently about gluing watercolour paper to a board.

Quite a few of you may have already seen this video of mine because it's part of my Watercolour Chrysanthemum class on Skillshare. Instead of spending time making a new video I thought I'd post this here for those who are wanting to know how to do it.

As compared to stretching watercolour paper this process doesn't save you any time but it does eliminate the need for framing your paintings behind glass. I use Golden Gel Medium (extra heavy gloss) to glue the paper to the board. Here's the heavy gloss: https://amzn.to/2M0lBY3

When I do this I spray my completed painting with Krylon archival spray varnish to protect it and then it can hang straight on the wall.

Could you do this process after the paper had been painted on?

Louise De Masi

Yes you can Gloria. Your paper needs to be larger than the board you use so you can trim away the edges. You also have to make sure you get it square on the board and not make your painting look crooked. I like to do it before just in case I mess it up. At least then I haven't destroyed a painting that I'd spent days and days working on.

Michele Miller

Wow! That was quick! Thank you Louise 😄

joy carter

Louise where would i get the board, sick of paying big prices for framing.

Anne McLaren

Just letting you know that Office Works sell frames at various sizes for water colors and pastels with the surrounding mounts and glass a lot cheaper than the professional framers, but I like this way of gluing the paper to the block much better and hope to try it out when I start painting.

Jo Olson

Thanks for posting this here. I like the look of the board, especially for larger paintings, and want to give it a try. I know you posted this little tutorial previously but didn't remember where to look for your instructions. This will make it easier to find once I gather the materials.

Ann C Griffin

Thanks Louise! Again, great instruction and professionalism. Thanks for the tips-

Louise De Masi

Thank you for letting me know Anne. I have bought some ready made frames from Target in the past which are really nice. I always take out the mat that they come with because they aren't archival and they will out acid on your painting and mark it. I take the mats to a framer and he cuts me some new archival ones for about $11 each.

Eve Eichner

Thank you so much Louise! We appreciate you!💕

Hey Louise how are you guys doing? Everytime I hear updates on the fires I think of you.

Desert Morning

Hi Louise -- one of these days could you do a tutorial on painting a cabbage -- similar to your painting on YouTube? -- And I've been thinking about the fires too. I hope you and your family are OK.

Louise De Masi

Hi Katie, Thank you for thinking of us. We are ok where we are but most days it is still smoky. Today temperatures are set to soar again so they have been giving people near the fires warnings to leave. The fires are so big that they can't put them out. All they can do is try to save property. It's tragic that we've lost over 700 homes, 8 people and 3000,000,000 hectares and I can't even think about all the wildlife. I've never seen anything like it. We always have fires but not like this. What we need is rain. We are desperate for it. We live on 25 acres and we've been here for19 years. Every spring and summer, every single weekend is spent mowing. We mow about 5 acres. This year we have mowed it once in the Spring and once in the Summer. The ground is so dry that the grass is now crispy and doesn't grow anymore. Hoping for some relief soon. 💦

Louise De Masi

I forgot about my cabbage. Yes I can do that. Someone else mentioned they'd like to do some vegetables. We are ok. Thank you for thinking of us. 💕

Hi Louise. Thanks for the info on glueing paper to board. I tried the daisy painting on it. It has come out well but i didn't expect the way that the paint reacted. It seemed to dry off a lot quicker. i normally tape to perspex, so it makes sense, cheers. Stay safe.

Neha Subramaniam

Hi Louise,!!Wish you a very Happy New Year in advance😍 I have a question... do we need to stretch the paper before gluing it? Thanx... stay safe and lots of 💖 well

Louise De Masi

Hi Neha, Thank you and happy new year to you too. No you don't need to stretch the paper first.

K Ned

Hi Louise, Do you put anything over of the watercolor painting to protect it?

Louise De Masi

Hi K, Yes. When it's completed I spray Krylon varnish over the top of it to protect it. After that's dry you can also use a brush on varnish to add even more protection if you want to.

Paula Lay

Hi there. Do you ever adhere a finished painting to a board? I wondering what I would do if a painting was not a success after I had glued it to a cradle board. Thank you for such quality tutorials.

Louise De Masi

Hi Paula. My pleasure and thank you. You can adhere a finished painting to a board. Some artists do that. I don't because if things go wrong during the gluing process then my painting would be ruined. I'd rather lose a blank piece of paper than one I've spent days working on.

Karen Richardson

Hi Louise, is there any need to seal the board before gluing your painting on it? Some artists seem to worry about acid from the wood. Thank you for any help you can give on this.

Louise De Masi

Hi Karen, There's so much glue that went on it I didn't worry about it but if it concerns you it's probably not a bad idea just to be safe.

Una Baralo

Hi. Is the tutorial for painting the chrysanthemum only on Skillshare ? Or here on Patreon also ? Thanks Una Happy new year, 2021 will be Fabulously colorful

Louise De Masi

Hi Una, it's only on Skillshare. Happy New Year to you too!

Una Baralo

Ok thanks. . And a super fast reply I might add !😀🌺🌸🌼🌻🌷💐🎨

Lynn Woodward

Louise, what made you select a gel medium over maybe a cheaper archival PVA glue?I have some PVA around here from my bookbinding days but if that’s not satisfactory I will get the gel medium.

Louise De Masi

That's a good question Lynn and I'm not sure myself. When I did it for the first time I went on YouTube and the videos I watched all used a gel medium so I took their advice and did the same thing. I'm not sure if all PVA glues are archival. Maybe some of the glues discolour with age 🤷🏼‍♀️. I think the gel mediums take a while to dry as well so it gives you time to spread it out evenly and get the paper on there. I don't know whether the glue would dry quicker and not give you as much time to do that. You could experiment with a scrap piece of paper and some scrap wood and see what it's like I guess. I remember reading at the time I was eager to try it that people who make decoupage pieces use gel medium. So I decided to use it too.

Tonya Kortekaas

Is this flower tutorial on Patreon? I’d love to try it!

Louise De Masi

Hi Tonya, no it's not on Patreon I'm sorry, this one is on Skillshare.

Anna Volkova

Can anybody, please provide the list of watercolor paints that are used for Chrysanthemum painting? I have limited number of paints and it usually takes me some time to get them via mail. I just don’t want to join skillshare just to see the list of paints and then waste time waiting when my paints arrive. Thanks.

Anita Repya

Will this ever be available to patrion ? Would love to paint it.

Louise De Masi

It's on Skillshare Anita. I have no plans at this stage to put it on Patreon. You can try Skillshare with a free - one month trial. I'll be offering a free trial on an upcoming YouTube video at the end of the month.

Anita Repya

Sweet I'll keep an eye ou,, thank you 😊

Louise De Masi

Sorry- I should have said the end of February. I'm not posting any new vids on YouTube until February.
