For my beginners.

Hi everyone,

Here is the video I made that shows you how to paint a flat wash. Painting a flat wash is a fundamental technique that you should learn to master when you begin to paint in watercolour.

Your flat wash should be even in tone and colour from top to bottom. I show you how to do it and I give you a few exercises that will help you to achieve them.

I'll make two more videos to demonstrate the other two washes that you need to learn as well.

I'll add this to my Patreon tutorial index that I have made on my website so you can  find it whenever you need it.

The index is here: http://www.louisedemasi.com/new-index

Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the links to the other technique videos.

Hotflash Vickie

Thanks very much for this; I'd never seen a tutorial or tips on flat washes before, and I learned a lot!! By the way, for your U.S. patrons, it's always "FUN" for us to figure out all those paper size terms you guys use (Europeans mostly) , like A3, A4... what the heck? LOL... I remember a couple of years ago being so frustrated I went online and downloaded a template of translated U.S. paper sizes, just so I could have it to refer to, so I'll see if I can upload that (copyright-free) either here or on the Facebook page for your poor American students if they also suffer from our poor education system (we just are too stubborn to switch to metric; oh, how the government has tried and failed SO many times to get us to switch, and oh, how they will try and fail again, I promise you!! Until they succeed, I have my cheat sheet!)

Good point Vickie! A5, A4, A3, A2, A1 are all standard sizes for the rest of us. Basically - the sizes double. So if you start with A5 - (that was the smallest pad I show in the video) A4, the next size up, is twice as big as the A5. A3 is twice as big as A4. A2 is twice as big as A3. A1 is twice as big as A2......simple 🥴. Here are the conversions for my US friends. A5............5.8" by 8.3" A4..........8.3" by 11.7" A3........11.7" by 16.5" A2........16.5" by 23.4" A1......23.4" by 33.1"

Thanks for tutorial on flat washes, super informative . Thanks for always saying / writing what the size of paper is in inches on your tutorials and/or on supply list 😍

Gloria Kerkhoff

I found this to be so helpful. It looks like such an easy thing to do and yet there are so many ways it can go wrong. P.S. I love your bloopers!!

Patti Kehl

Thank you Louise : ) I am always so surprised how wet your "damp" paper is! I need to get this through my head! LOVE the bloopers! : )

Louise you are the greatest teacher I met so far, thank you for sharing your knowledge....you share ! This is really important, other teachers don't share, they teach but don't share like you, thank you so much :-)

Louise De Masi

Gosh- high praise! Thank you very much Cristina. I love what I do and I want you to love it too. 💕

Louise De Masi

Thanks Patti! That's one thing many beginners struggle with at first. Their paper is never wet enough. 💕

Marijke de Boer

Oooh I very much like your new patreon tutorial index. I am so proud I managed an advanced (Bald Eagle) tutorial; saying that I love the beginner ones too. So much to learn! Thank you for being such a good teacher. I started my first water colour trial exactly one year ago and then found you about 6 months later - have been a water-colour addict ever since.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Marijke. There is so much to learn. I'm learning too! It's a beautiful addiction to have. 💕

Sharon E Toombs

I enjoyed this beginner tutorial very much especially the hints about overlapping the strokes and carrying a continuous bead of paint at the bottom. Please keep the beginner tutorials coming! Thank you, Sharon

Kim Fuoco

Thank you for this video, I did learn a lot just from this one.

Cecilia Nuyianes

This is a very good video... practise practise practise...

Great video. One question, I used a pencil with my first squares and rectangles and it ran a bit into the colour. So I then used a fine point pen and I also ran into the wash. What do you use when you are putting your drawing onto your paper ?

Louise De Masi

I use either a graphite pencil or saral transfer paper. Both of those won't run when you get water on them. I'm currently making a new beginner tutorial that shows you how I use the graphite. It should be ready next week.
