Hi everyone,

Here's a quick video I made for YouTube. This year I have decided to start painting full studies in a journal before I begin painting the proper painting. In the past, I have always been too eager to begin painting and as a result quite a few paintings have failed or I have struggled with them to get them where I want them.

Painting a full painting in my journal (or on a scrap piece of watercolour paper) first has been very positive for me so far. I find I can begin the proper painting with greater confidence and I can enjoy the process much more because I've already struggled with it on the journal painting. I am aware that a lot of you paint the tutorial pieces more than once and I hope that has been positive for you.

I paint in a Winsor & Newton watercolour journal and I've also got the Strathmore journal you saw in the tree video. I've been taping the pages together with wide Washi tape that I bought at a hardware store. I do this before I start painting to make the journal more like a watercolour block pad. It helps to keep the paper a bit flatter as I paint.

Have a fabulous weekend. I'm going to try painting some skies and clouds in my journal this weekend.

Hi Louise - I’d love to see you painting some moody skies - please 🙏 !

Elaine

Great ideas Louise, I will definitely try them 💕

Katie Nack

Lol I got the YouTube notification when you posted and watched it right away.

Debbie Thompson

Your videos are always SO informative and helpful Louise! It makes me want to go jump into my watercolors right away. Unfortunately I haven’t had a lot of time to paint lately, but I’ll keep watching your videos and dreaming of the day. Keep being adorable. :)

Lydia Shemain

How professional and how perfect are your methods, but what patience. Thank you Louise for all your tips and suggestions. You are a beautiful painter even your studies are so perfect. Blessings for your generosity.

I’m stopping right now! 😂😂😂 Suffice to say I wish the return button didn’t post a reply on Patreon!!

Louise, this 'thinking aloud' as you work is SO helpful.....

Kathy Wilden

The colours are lovely. It’s a great idea to iron out all the hiccups beforehand then you can relax and paint with more confidence. Thanks Louise. Looking forward to this one.

I have been looking for quality hardbound 100% cotton 300 GSM watercolor journals. They are hard to find! When I saw this video I excitedly searched for the Winsor & Newton journal you have. I can't find it in the U.S in real life or online, or on the Jacksons UK site. Is it s available in Australia? Looking forward to your next video.

Sheridan

Thank you, Louise. I shall take a look.

Kathi L Manville

Thank you so much for these tips! Will you be posting this Yellow Robin as a tutorial?

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Kathi. Yes this month. I'm working on it.

Kathi L Manville

Fantastic! I will eagerly await! You have such lovely birds in Australia!

Marijke de Boer

Do you have more information about the winsor and newton diary you are using?

Susanne Bachun

Thank you so much, Louise ! This is a very helpful tip. I learned this skill while studying at London Art College, but simply forgot it. So, anxiety is with me during every new painting. But you're right, spending time with a new idea before starting the final piece is well worth it. I'm going to put out my Strathmore Journal and start over with studies again. You are such a great Artist, thank you !

Louise De Masi

Thank you Susanne. The anxiety is often with me too! I'm learning to slow down and do some studies first particular on subjects I haven't painted before. 💕

Sharon R Altman

Sounds like good advice. I really get nervous to take the first step in starting. I like the tip.

Alina Fazal Juma

Hi Louise this is a rly great tip! Sadly I have struggled to find a watercolour sketchbook here in Canada that is 100% cotton - I’m wondering - do the pages hold with the heavier washes in your sketchbook since the paper isn’t stretched? Or would you advise we keep our washes less wet in the sketchbook studies? Ordered the only 100% cotton sketchbook I found online and it’s hot pressed so will see how it works - fingers crossed!

Louise De Masi

Hi Alina, the paper warps a little because it's not stretched. It is a good idea not to make it too wet for that reason. Lately, I've been using wide washi tape. I tape it onto the page I'm working on and I wrap it around all the other pages too (sort of like my own version of a watercolour block pad). That helps a little.

Linda

Such a great idea, Louise. Thanks.

Betty Smith

You know, I just finished a cotton blossom painting today. I watched every video on the subject I could find, including yours, of course. I did the painting, thinking of it as a “study.” Funny thing is, I enjoyed the process so much more! I can’t wait to start the next one! I met the housekeeper today and she really liked it! HOORAY!!!!

Louise De Masi

Yay! I'm glad the housekeeper like it! I always find the studies enjoyable to paint too. The pressure is relieved.💕
