Hi everyone,

Here is the Lighthouse pen and wash tutorial. It's a little painting that's quick to do and is not too difficult.

You'll need a waterproof pen to do the linework and if you don't have the paint colours I have used - choose similar colours of your own that you do have. I used cold pressed paper but if you want it to be smoother for the linework then try hot pressed. I'm planning a video that will focus on the differences between hot and cold pressed paper and when to use one over the other.

The line drawing, my finished painting and the supplies list are attached below.

Have fun with it.

Take care!

Love this. Hubby and I were just there in July. This is Peggys Cove Lighthouse in Nova Scotia Canada. I had made a line drawing from one of my photos and came here for tips on painting - still learning watercolor and realized it's same lighthouse ❤️

I am new to your program and a frustrated that each one I begin I am missing a paint color or something else. Can you please publish a list of all I need so I don’t begin a tutorial and have to wait for a delivery to proceed. Thank you

Louise De Masi

Hi Pat, Dom here. Louise publishes all the supplies, which includes the colours used, in the supplies list attached to each of the tutorials. See the downloads in the post above. "Lighthouse Supplies List". She also has a blog post on the website with substitute colours for common paints in three different brands. I’m so excited for this one. Perfect timing! My mom absolutely loves lighthouses and I’ve been looking for different tutorial in a pen and wash so this was like you were reading my mind 🥰 it’s going to be a bday gift to her so I’ve got fingers crossed but lucky for me moms are very forgiving 💕

Is this Peggy's Cove lighthouse in Nova Scotia? I've been there! The granite rock is pink, it's a beautiful place!

Marijke de Boer

This is very nice and just perfect to try in my new water colour diary. I ended up buying the Strathmore (A4) diary you featured in one of your tutorials. I really like the quality of the paper, it is different than Arches but it is just nice to 'doodle' and even with some lovely results. Especially in these difficult times I love sketching and painting - it takes my mind of all the worries in the world. Thank you Louise!

Louise -- thank you so much for these wonderful tutorials. While I haven't always had time to work through --- I do now like many of us and I so appreciate your skill. Hope you are safe.

Chantal NUGUES-PERRIN

Louise, thanks for this tuto... looks lovely and a good introduction to mixing with ink pen. Hope you are now fully recovered from your leg . Keep safe xx

thank you Louise for the Sky tutorials, and Lighthouse! It was the first time I used my masking fluid! I will upload them on your Facebook page. You are a wonderful teacher and artist!

Today is my husband's birthday. I'll paint this for him since he LOVES lighthouses.

More landscapes, please. I've done this one three times now and I learn so much from it each time. Thanks.

Iona Treeby Ward

I'm currently painting this lighthouse. I'm having fun doing it especially giving shape to the rocks. I love using the grey mixture - it gives such a nice texture to the rocks.

So after months of following you on YouTube (and now that my Art College Extended Studies program is not doing any classes until 2021) I have joined you on Patreon. And what do I see but my local Lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove, just outside Halifax, Nova Scotia. Obviously this was meant to be and I was just there yesterday!! Just finishing up some staging/fisherman’s boathouse and I’ll be thrilled to give Peggy’s Cove another go. Love your style and teaching methods...can’t wait to dig in!! Thank you!!

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Ann. It looks like a beautiful place!

Tracey Holden

This was amazing to paint! Thank you! I really felt this tutorial helped me get to know just how much or little pigment my brushes can hold as well as teaching me a wee bit about wet on wet. I'm really pleased with how mine turned out. Getting there! Painting it on IG if you want to see it. :)

Louise De Masi

That's great Tracey. I'm glad you're happy with yours. Baby steps and lots of practice! 💕

Louise De Masi

Hi Lynn, whenever you use masking fluid it's a good idea to test it on your paper before you use it. Test it on an edge somewhere where it won't matter. Some papers are very fragile and will tear when you use masking fluid. Other papers might discolour when you use it. I usually rub it over with an eraser when I want to remove it. There are rubber cement pick up tools you can buy as well that are good to use.

Marcela Fernandez del Rio

Hi Louise, I want to paint this in hot pressed paper. My question is if it is better to stretch it before? Thank you so much.

Louise De Masi

Hi Marcela, yes I always stretch the paper first - both hot pressed and cold pressed. It will buckle and pucker if you don't.

Enjoyable tutorial. I appreciate how you describe your thought processes. For masking fluid, I used a Pebeo masking fluid pen. It saves the hassle of using and cleaning an old brush. Great for when working in smaller areas. Do not know if you can get in Australia.
