Hi everyone,

Here is my sky studies video. Once a month I spend a day trying to teach myself how to paint landscapes in watercolour. It's not something I've ever tried before so it's all new to me. I mentioned that I would document my learning as I went so those patrons who have never tried painting landscapes can learn along with me.  Many of you are more likely more accomplished in this area so if you have any tips I'm all ears.

Basically what I do is get out my watercolour books and read a little and then I start practicing on my cheaper paper. When I feel more confident I try painting small studies on my more expensive paper.

Last month I painted my first trees and this month I painted some skies for the first time. The tree video is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/34405468

At the moment I'd be apprehensive to paint on larger paper so a lot more practice is needed first. I will keep trying and I'll share what I'm learning with you.

I have attached a photo of the four sky studies I painted and a little landscape I played with. There is no supplies list or line drawings because this isn't a normal tutorial.

I hope you enjoy following.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Derina. I have lots to learn about landscape painting. I'll dedicate some time this year to learn more. 💕

Hi Louise, what kind of tape is the green one to attach the paper to board?

Laura Etheridge

I loved your skies Louise, that’s what I’m trying to paint now so this videos are very very helpful . The one on the larger piece of Arches is so lovely. Thanks for your patience in explaining all the steps so thoroughly.

Louise De Masi

Hi Laura, It's decorator's tape that I bought from a hardware store. It's low tack so it doesn't damage the paper when you remove it. Painters use it to tape up around windows and skirting boards etc before they paint. When they peel it off- no damage is done.

Laura Etheridge

Thanks Louise, I have some I will give it a try.

I LOVE your honesty and fallibility! Thank you for this! It's SO helpful to know that, even for you, things don't always go perfectly!

Pauline Fisher

Your tutorials are clear and understandable. Thank you so much. Looking forward to carrying out more.

PAMELA FAULKNER

So very nice, Louise. Thank you for letting us travel along with you as you experience and discover how to. I am grateful, as I want to try it myself. Pam

All your skies turned out beautifully! Great tutorial as always. Are those cockatoos wild?!

Desert Morning

Wonderful lesson. It's so helpful to see an accomplished artist go through the struggle phase as you learn something new. I love all of the skies.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Beth. Yes they are wild. They can be very noisy- particularly in the afternoon.

Thank you for letting us see your learning process, it’s really helpful, and I love to hear the birds in the background, they sound so exotic, when I hear them I can almost imagine I’m sitting painting with you in Australia, so please let us hear them more!!

Thank you Louis! The skies and landscape are beautiful! I appreciate your video, it teaches me a lot!

Thank you so much Louise. I really appreciate the effort you are doing going out of your comfort zone for the benefit of your students! I think you are really very brave and an amaizing teacher!

Louise , it is so refreshing to be allowed to be a part of someone's journey in learning a new skill. Other youtube artists may not be so willing to do what you are doing. Let me say it is INVALUABLE as a learning experience. You are a wonderful artist, yet modest, unassuming and very generous. Thank you.

Rachel Ottley

Thank you Louise for sharing your learning process with us! It is encouraging to see that you are not perfectly perfect at everything the first time you try it, and that practice is the key! I am thankful that you continue to create and share with us, and send great joy to us all over the world!!

Audrey

Hi, I was having problem viewing the post, the video keeps cutting off to refresh, and finally it just stuck?

Louise De Masi

Hi Audrey. That could be your internet speeds. Dom told me that videos on Vimeo play at full resolution regardless of your internet speed. Whereas YouTube adjusts the resolution to match your internet speed. So if your internet is running slow while you are watching a YouTube video, the video resolution will decrease. I have to put my videos on Vimeo now because people can go to various sites and download unlisted videos from YouTube. They aren't safe there. I have found that sites like Vimeo, Patreon, Skillshare work best on Google Chrome.

I find Winsor Newton cerulean blue a bit sedimentary, is there another brand more transparent?

Susan Mayhew

That link was most enlightening. When I was at my closest art supply store this weekend, I picked up a tube of Cotman cerulean blue, at the suggestion of the clerk, and it seems to have less granulation and more transpparency. I didn't delve into the chemistry of this one, but I'll try it out.
