Hi everyone,

I hope you are safe and well.

Here is the first Hummingbird tutorial. This is a fairly simple painting that won't take too long to complete. I think beginners with some experience should be able to manage it.

My son in Sydney is editing the footage of the other Hummingbird that I painted (the one that's flying). When he finishes doing that I'll voice it over and upload it for you.

The files you need are attached below. The reference photo I downloaded from Pixabay. I've put the link to the photo on the supplies list if you want to download it yourself.

I look forward to seeing your versions of this little cutie.

Have fun.

I just finished this tutorial. Really enjoyed and am pleased with the outcome. Thank you Louise.

Mary C

I'd love some beginner to intermediate tutorials that use just a triad of colors. For instance, the first tutorial for the hummingbird uses 11 different colors! : )

Louise De Masi

Thanks Mary. There are so many tutorials where I have used 2, 3 or 4 colours. The Autumn Leaf, Blue Jay, Fox, Leaves in Pot, Panda, Willie Wagtail, Woodpecker, Eucalyptus Leaves Triadic, Apple Blossoms, Baby Chicken, Seal, Mushrooms, Shells -to name a few. There are many more.

Mary C

Great - thanks for highlighting these - I will definitely check them out!

Mary C

I've enjoyed doing the eucalyptus leaves, the oak leaf, the peapods and the Carolina wren so far. Thank you.

Melissa Brundrett

I love this little hummer! We get lots of them in the spring and they are so fascinating to watch! Just love these little birds. We had so many one year we added several more feeders as they can be very territorial! We had one guy we nickname Napoleon. He would perch at the top of the shepherds hook and shoo off all the others. It was hilarious to watch! Also, thank you so much for the detailed explanation of what you are doing, it is so helpful!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Melissa! I've never seen them in real life but I'm fascinated by them. I think they are beautiful. Lucky you to be able to see them in your garden. 🥰

Debbie Maddock

Really loved this tutorial, it was a nice relaxing project, very happy with my little hummingbird. Thank you x

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful! I'm so pleased you enjoyed it. Thank you Debbie.

Peiying

I think the hummingbird is called Anna's Hummingbird, and this could be a female too. Always wanted to paint them but too intimidating because of the feathers. You broke it down so clearly on how to paint them, and with patience, they turned out surprisingly good. Thank you so much!

Julie Smout

Thanks Louise I really enjoyed your tutorial and very happy with my results. This is my second hummingbird this month. Thank you Julie

Louise De Masi

I'm glad you enjoyed it and that you're happy with how yours turned out. Thank you Julie

Bren

The more I watch the more I absorb. Thank you so much. I just can't believe how much I've learned in a short period of time! ❤️

Rainkatt

We have a lot of hummingbirds here, I think they are the cutest when they are sitting :) cant wait to do this one

Robyn

Thanks Louise, a project for tomorrow. Stay healthy. 😀

Marianne Manders

Louise thanks for some distraction in these difficult times. Stay well !!

Chantelle Venter

Thank you so much Louise. It's a rainy Monday here in South Africa so this one is one my list for today. I find it so funny that I can do your paintings but for the life of me I cant get loose floral right. Tried some on the weekend and it was so funny. Guess with practice it will come someday. Appreciate all the hard work you do for us ❤️

Louise De Masi

Thanks Chantelle. You're not alone. I tried today to paint a loose tulip painting......pfft.....forget it. It was awful. I try too hard all the time. I think I'll stick to what I know. Some of us are loose painters and some of us aren't. I'll keep sitting in the middle - detail with loose, relaxed areas seems to be my style. Have a wonderful day. It's Monday night here and I'm heading to bed soon.

Chantelle Venter

So glad I'm not alone. I still have to find my style but seems the more realistic things work better for me as well. Maybe someday I can get the loose techniques right. Hope you have a great day there as well

toni_evermore

I am so unbelievably excited for this tutorial! Thank you so much for brightening my day!! Stay well Louise!

Suzan Crouse

Hello Louise! This little bird is quite a beauty. Thank you for sharing it. I look forward to painting it soon. Life in my world is a bit crazy right now. I am moving into a new house amongst the civic virus, yeah. It's just every where. However, this little beauty is on my list as soon as I can sneak a few hours to myself. Stay well.

Pam Causey

Thank you so much can't wait to start this pretty girl !

Paula Bush

This is exquisite! Of all your paintings on Patreon, Skillshare, and YouTube, I think this is my favorite!💚💚💚

Nancy Larson

Love, love, love this. Thank you.

Diana Blakeman

Just watched the entire tutorial. Quite magnificent!! Now I will attempt to paint.

River

Thank you thank you thank you! Just love the hummingbird. I tried loose, and absolutely miserable at it. Love this style so much better!! So happy to have found you!!!

Jacinthe Boudreau

Thanks Louise for this beautiful hummingbird. For printing purpose, is the hummingbird printable on a 8 1/2 X 10 papier?

Louise De Masi

Yes I think so Jacinthe. I do all my file size increasing in Photoshop.

Lydia Shemain

Louise, what a beautiful little humming bird — you’re amazing. i’m a loose painter, a beginner and still struggling. What I understand, focus on one flower—don’t include too much detail, the other flowers are ghost flowers. For the backgrounds, think you’re a little child playing with paints and make a hell of a mess. Sounds easy but .....!!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Lydia! That's a really helpful description. Whenever I try I get in an awful mess. I admire those artists who can paint loosely well. I think it takes great skill.

Lydia Shemain

Jokes aside, if you’re interested in painting loose, renowned UK artist Jean Haines has just started an online school and membership is free for 2 weeks, not sure when this offer expires, and you can view some of her videos and decide if painting loose is for you.

Pam Lowery

Is there anyway to print out the drawing?

Louise De Masi

Hi Pam, The drawing is there for you to download. It's attached underneath my message. Download it to your computer so you you can print it.

Jacinthe Boudreau

In previous tutorial, we receive the picture in two files ready to be print?

Louise De Masi

I do that on the larger paintings. Would you like me to enlarge this one for you? I can make it so it's printable over two pieces of paper.

Jacinthe Boudreau

This picture wasn't a large one :) Thank you Louise, no need, I believe I am able to enlarge a tiny bet bigger and still print on my printer. :))

Louise De Masi

Ok - let me know if you want me to make it larger for you.

Sharon E Toombs

Thank you Louise. I'm going to enjoy painting this one very much. Can hardly wait for the flying one!!!

Bill Boyea

Had such an amazing time painting this little fella. Thank you so much for all you teach us.

Barbara Ford

I thought I might try the hummingbird that is on YouTube—it’s green (not the same as this one). Is there an outline for it somewhere for patrons?

Marijke de Boer

Such a lovely little chap - I loved painting this one:)

Sharon R Altman

Louise, I too would like to try the hummingbird that is on YouTube. Would you be so kind as to send me the outline?

Carlotta Saylor

What did you think of the paper you used on this hummingbird?

Louise De Masi

It was quite nice to use Carlotta. It accepted the paint and water well. The colours are bright. This painting wasn't too wet but I think next time I use it I'll take it off the block and stretch it first.

Emma Clark

Hi Louise. I am loving your tutorials - they are keeping me busy in isolation! So far I have painted your giraffe and robin from SkillShare and your barn owl from YouTube. Can I ask when you think the flying hummingbird tutorial might be ready?

Louise De Masi

Hi Emma, Thank you - I'm glad! Before the end of the month is my plan. 🤞🏻

Marty Talley-Sides

Hi Louise! Just painted the hummingbird! Can’t wait to get better! I hope!

Pam Causey

When I download it the only thing that shows is part of his wing looks like it's four pages for some reason. Can't get it to show on one page.. I'll take it some office store try to get them to make it one page to print I guess . Thanks stay safe

Louise De Masi

That's really strange Pam. I hope they can help. Let me know how you go.

Mel Johnson

Morena Louise. I was wondering how long you have to leave the underlayer to dry. I keep going in too early and getting a watery mess.

Lynn Benn

Hi Louise Loved painting this gorgeous hummingbird. First time on hot pressed paper and not my best work but great practice run for when I do the it on cold pressed.

Louise De Masi

Hi Mel, I have my hairdryer beside me when I paint and I will use the hair dryer whenever I want to keep painting on an area that's wet. That way I know for sure that it is dry. Always be careful when you use a hair dryer though because if it's too wet when you turn it on you risk blowing the paint all over the paper.

Jerri Henderson

Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! I so enjoyed painting this beautiful fella. I love your teaching style. I’m learning so much and understanding things I have struggled with. It’s put the joy back into my painting.

Eileen Tobaygo

Great tutorial! I struggle with being VERY tight and you are helping me to loosen up, esp. with the backgrounds. I have a question, though. When you transfer your images with Saral paper, can the excess lines be erased? I have graphite paper and it's a mess - it's very dark and the lines cannot be erased or even lightened, so I struggle on with rubbing the back of the image with a 6B pencil and transferring that way. It's OK, but not great for details.

Louise De Masi

Hi Eileen, Saral paper can be a bit messy. I use a Steadtler Mars plastic eraser to remove the smudge markes and soften the lines. Lately I've been scribbling over the back of my line drawings with an HB graphite pencil (like you). Then I place it against the watercolour paper and trace over it. It's been working better than the saral paper because it's not as messy. I have a light box but it's useless on the heavier paper. I want to invest in a projector. I think they're about $500 but I know I willl put it to good use and do away with the messy part of transferring drawings to the paper.

Alison Hendry

Turn allllll the lightship out and sometimes you can do a fairly good job of transfer to 300# paper with light box. IF you trace that drawing onto track g paper with dark black ink or sharpie. A projector helps, but one’ head gets in the way a lot.

Alison Hendry

I am thrilled! I watched the tutorial, then sat down to paint in a whole new way! I actually finished a painting in less than a day or two or week or two..... it was so much fun to try things YOUR way Louise. I do love you! I enjoy your YouTube and your humour and I bow down to your skills and talent. How do I post what I did today? Thanks . Alison in Houston, but escaped to Snowmass Colorado. They are NOT behaving well in Houston so we ran away. Canadian expat...

Susan Mayhew

You might try an Alvin Dry Cleaning Pad. They are available in many online art stores. They remove graphite smudges and reduce the heaviness of lines without damaging the paper.

Alison Hendry

oh btw, my favorite cousin is Australian via Scotland. He is living in Brisbane now while he waits for Manila to open up again and he and his partner can return, so I love Australians !

Louise De Masi

Hi Alison. That's great! I'm so happy. There's nowhere here on Patreon to share paintings unfortunately but you can post on the Facebook group if you want to: facebook.com/groups/118323255562001 ❤️

Alison Hendry

Thank you. My bird is different from yours but I learned so much. You are a fabulous teacher. I think I might try bright white paper for some things. I notice your image is bright white and mine a dull yellow until I hit the edit button. I usually work on Arches paper natural white. Time to branch out and oh darn. Go shopping! Many thanks again. I look forward to my next practice session.

Janis Dolan

I still need to get a hold of this wet on wet stuff, I just don't seem to have the right amount of water, but I guess practise makes perfect. Thanks again for a lovely tutorial.

Lillian Contois

I’ve learned so much from the few videos I watched along with completing the projects. Thank you for sharing your painting process.

Joy Wright

My first bird in watercolour, thank you for guiding me through it. I loved it and it helped me understand the form of birds when painting. I love how you throw a colour in here and there and it just makes it perfect. Thank you

Nancy Guenther

I love this little hummingbird so much. Today I painted it for the second time as a gift for a friend who is going through some very difficult times. I hope she likes it. Thank you so much, Louise.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Nancy. I'm sure she will. That will be a lovely gift for her. Thank you!

Candace

Hey Louise, just did the hummingbird tutorial. It was such a good tutorial. A million thank you's for being such a good teacher :) It makes such a difference with how it is taught.

Louise De Masi

I just saw it. It's so beautiful Candace. Well done!! I'm impressed. Thank you so much. 💕

Michelle Burtness

I just finished this project last night. I added a few details I thought would make it more “my own”, and it turned out beautiful. These tutorials are wonderful to help one “see” more than what you normally would. Thanks, Louise, for making my life a little easier.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Michelle. I saw your little humming bird on FB. It's beautiful. 💕

Audrey Reed

I painted this last night, my first Louise De Masi tutorial on Patreon (I have some on Skillshsare). I made the bird very small, like 6 inches. That certainly made it more difficult, but it cam out ok. I watched some of the immediate/advanced and not sure I will ever be able to do those!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Audrey. Take your time, keep painting as often as you can and you'll see improvement.
