Hi everyone,

I posted this video on YouTube today where I talk about some of the things that go through my head when I'm planning a new painting.

I've attached the line drawing, reference photo and my finished painting below if you would like to try to paint them yourself. This is not a full tutorial but hopefully there is enough there for you to practice.

Colours: I used Winsor and Newton's Gold Ochre as the main colour of the tigers. I dropped in some Burnt Umber into the darker areas. On the lightest area on the chest of the front tiger there is some Daniel Smith's Buff Titanium. I mixed up a black from W & N Alizarin Crimson, Winsor Blue (red shade) and Transparent Yellow but you could use a pre mixed black like Lamp Black if you don't want to mix. I also used French Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna to make the grey on the rock. I used that grey in the ears and on the paws.

I'll be posting the Butcher Bird tutorial in a day or two. It's a fairly simple painting. I have to check it first and I'm editing the giraffe video this weekend as well. The elephant I'll post later in the month. I still have to paint a new one. I've been mixing up some skin colours too. So I'll let you know about that soon.

I hope you enjoy your weekend.

Louise

Lynn

Will this be a tutorial one day? I would love to tackle it

Louise De Masi

Hi Lynn. This wasn't filmed as a tutorial so unfortunately no but you could download the files above and give it a go yourself. Think of it as one of the monthly challenges. 😊

Lori DiPaola

I love that… thank you Is your drawing free hand or do you use another method. Thank you Louise ❣️

Lori DiPaola

You gave me courage to try a solo of my kitty 🐈‍⬛

Mary Chimento

Already saw it on You tube. Thank you - so awesome.

Michelle

Beautiful as always! It was nice to see the whole process. I think I need to stop being so lazy and start to do some studies before I do a painting. Also, I was wondering what is the name of the white ink you used for the whiskers. I couldn't find it in the list you posted on youtube.

Marika Roth

Loved watching this. When you do the study, do you use a lesser quality paper, and if you do, how do you know if the practice study will look like the final work?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Marika. Sometimes I do yes. I have some Saunders waterford pads that I use. It's good quality paper but it's not as expensive as Arches. Sometimes I'll work in my watercolour journal. It's good paper too (Winsor & Newton 300gsm) but not as good as my best paper. I know that when I do my final painting I have worked out my composition, my colours and my techniques and I have a pretty good idea about what it's going to look like when I'm finished. So I can begin my proper painting with much less anxiety.

Marika Roth

Thank you. I have done a few studies recently and it does make a difference, in the long run.

Valerie Duncan

Thanks so much for sharing this process with us. I do studies but after viewing this video I realize I am not using the studies to assist in planning how I will paint my final picture. I just paint many copies of the same painting. Your video has helped my understand a more efficient way of using studies. Thanks so much!

Shilpa Shah

I loved watching this Louise! Like you said in the beginning, I do proceed with caution when I'm trying to do my own study. This breakdown of the process really helps put things into perspective. I'm currently doing the Hyacinth Macaw painting and then I'll do this one, using all the amazing helpful tips you've shared here.

Derek sudell

Isn’t it possible to see reference photo at the same time as you paint! It would create a better understanding of the process involved.LIKE YOUR WORK

Louise De Masi

Thanks Derek. Yes absolutely I agree. I made this video specifically for youTube and I didn't want all the world to see the reference photo as I painted. I wanted to give the reference photo to all my patrons instead. So I've included it here for you to download.

Lynn Benn

This is brilliant and timely. I have been experimenting with some of my own photos unsuccessfully. With your thought process explained so well I feel more confident to keep trying. Thank you and I love the tigers you chose

Maree Millard

I love your teaching style, You are so helpful and I would not be where I am now with my watercolour if not for you. Thankyou

Louise Frumkin

Very helpful! I am very much in the situation you describe of wanting to create some original work yet struggling with that process. Thank you for taking the time to explain your process.

Liz C

Love the bloopers!

Brenda Linker

Hi Louise, I just became a patron today! your tiger video was awesome.

Mel Johnson

Such a beautiful painting. I have just finished the wren and started the zebra. I am learning as I go. I even have some more colours now and the gator board to put my watercolour paper on! :)

Elaine

Loved this Louise, I always learn so much from you, thank you for all your hard work and I also loved the bloopers! 😁💕

Marjorie Bannish

Ah.. you answered my 'how to start' questions!! I'm having such fun, but have so much to learn. My main challenge is water management!! So happy to have discovered you 😊!!

Margaret B Smith

Thank you, I really enjoyed watching this one, feel that I am getting to know you more and more. To love ones mentor is so important, it inspires to achieve and please. Keep on going, from strength the strength. One of these days my son-in-law will get an opportunity to fix the big scanner, by then I will share my beginning and one just done, whatever that is at the time.

Delores Lopez

This one gave me much insight into all things considered in a watercolor painting. Thanks for the beautiful results of your study.

Marika Roth

The tiger painting was a challenge for me, but I'm going to do another one right away and see what improvements I can make. If we don't have buff titanium, gold ochre, and the alazarin crimson, what do you suggest for either substitutes or which colors would work for mixing them. Thank you again for inspiring us.

Louise De Masi

Hi Marika, I don't know of a substitute for Buff Titanium. I only used a small amount of it on the chest of the tiger in front so you could try mixing one of your browns with a little yellow but keep it really pale. Alizarin crimson I used to mix the black so you any transparent red that you have. Gold Ochre is the main orange colour. It's an earthy orange- not too vibrant. So if you don't have any earthy orange colours you could mix a red and a yellow together to make an orange. If it's too bright mix a small amount of blue to dull it slightly.

Jerri Henderson

This video was so very helpful! Thank you for sharing your process. I am excited to put these tips to work! Always love the outtakes too! 🙂

maryann kohut

I am a very happy member of the de Masi Patreon. Course.....👏👏👏👏. However, drawing isn’t my strength. Is it possible to download all or most of your line drawings? I would be thrilled To pay for this privilege. Many thanks for your superb instruction and stunning watercolors. 💥

Louise De Masi

Hi Maryann. Thank you! I'm glad you are here. All of the line drawings are attached below the tutorials. There's even a line drawing here for these tigers. If you look below my main message under the videos you'll see the line drawings and other files in a red font. Click on them because they will download to your computer so you can print them.

Lydia Shemain

Gorgeous tigers. Louise, you can paint anything — a real joy to watch.

Janet Crowther

I love the tigers study! I love everything

susan

I loved watching this one come alive. to get buff titanium or something close I mix white, a little burnt sienna and a little bit of yellow ochre. It's fairly close.

Barbara Friend

Hello Louise I love your work..Thank you so much.Do you use paint out of the tube to mix or do you mix from a palette?

Louise De Masi

Hi Barbara, I'm not much of a mixer but when I do (and I need a lot of a mixed colour) I like to squirt out some fresh paint. I find it's easier to mix with the soft gooey fresh paint than paint that has gone hard on the palette.

Annika

Just loved these!!! What a great tutorial ❣️👍🏼

Delores Lopez

I have to watch some of these tutorials over and over.I always get something new that was not committed to my memory. This time I got the point about using cool and warm colors for contrast.I wish I could take a class in person w/ you.You are such a patient teacher.I hope you eyes are o.k. (I just got new glasses myself.

Fiona Kulesz

Hi Louise, what brand of white ink do you use? I struggle with titanium white paint.

Louise De Masi

Hi Fiona, I use Winsor and Newton white ink. I'm just about out of it so I went online to buy some more but I couldn't get it where I normally get it. Instead I bought some Art Spectrum white pigment ink and it's been working well for me.

ShinyMorgana Flutter.art

Hi Louise, the tigers are so lovely! I was wondering if you also have enlarged line drawings for them . I want to try them on an A3 sheet.
