Hi everyone,

This is the Butcherbird tutorial. This is a fairly simple painting. There's not a lot of detail and not too many feathers to worry about.

These little birds live in our garden. There's 8 of them altogether. Butcherbirds are said to have one of the nicest calls of all Australian birds. They get their name from the 'larder' habit they have where they impale their prey on a branch or thorn so they can eat it.

The files you need to complete the painting are attached below this message. I've included  and enlarged drawing  A3 size so you can print it on two pieces of paper for those who have difficulty resizing images.

I hope you enjoy it.

I'll put it on the indexes for you.

Thank you for another journey through watercolor with this tutorial and thank you so much for showing us the delightful butcherbird in your yard with it’s amazing song!

Louise -- I was wondering if you could use youtube again to post your tutorials? Vimeo does not let you speed up the tutorial for an initial watch or slow it down while painting along. That feature is really useful on youtube. Thanks so much for your fab tutorials!

Louise De Masi

Hi Sudha, Thank you! I wish I could I'm sorry. Unfortunately on YouTube unlisted videos aren't safe. People can go to different sites and access them and download them. On Vimeo they are safe from poachers. I have to pay to have an account on Vimeo but I'd rather do that than have them stolen. I found out after I'd uploaded the first group of tutorials to YouTube. So since then I've been putting them on Vimeo. I was just reading- apparently if I upgrade to a higher paying tier on Vimeo I can include the speed controls. It's more than double what I'm paying now though. 😬

Thank you for including the enlarged size line drawing. I struggle with technology at the best of times and have been unable to resize some of the tutorial drawings which I have then found too fiddly to paint with any confidence. I am looking forward to trying this beautiful bird as soon as my Arches paper arrives...beyond excited (posh paper)

Louise De Masi

Let me know which ones Sarah and I can do some larger files for them too when I have time.

Thank you so much for the A3 line drawings. My friend loves her butcher birds so I'm keen to paint this for her. I'm a bit confused with the drawings as I thought I would get half a bird on the left and the other half on the right. I'm getting a full bird on the right, am I missing something? Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Sue, There's three files there that are the line drawings. There's one with the entire bird on it including the branch. Then there's an enlarged one that has the left side of the bird and another file that has the bird on it but not the left side of the branch. They should print on seperate pieces of paper and then you can sticky tape them together to trace them. That's the size my painting is.

Sue Gates

Thanks I figured as much but just thought I would ask....I'm so pleased you have a teaching background as you always have to expect someone like me to double check the directions!

Sarah Wragg

Thank you Louise, it may be the ones I have chosen were a small size anyway but particularly the chickadee and male wren. If that's the case I will faff around with the settings on the printer. I think my main problem may be that I use a note book and kindle as Idon't have a laptop/pc and appear to have limited control over printing.

Louise, that is GORGEOUS. You can paint anything my dear. And, your drawing skills are super. Next challenge, loose watercolours so you can help me with my loose watercolour course. You are an amazing teacher, so aware of the problems and you address them before we ask. Thanks for fantastic support.

Paula Bush

Another fabulous tutorial; your teaching skills really shine, Louise! Now if I can get my brain to match my hands and paint this! ❤️

Alberto

Hello, surely it has already been said but I missed it .... what kind of tape do you use to delimit the design and create the regular white margin? thanks

Louise De Masi

Hi Alberto, that's washi tape. It's low tack and acid free. You can buy it at stationery stores.

Thank you Louise, I am looking forward to attempting this tutorial, I really look forward to each new project . Due to where I live, I am very isolated, so keeping busy creating all I can, is a reward in itself. I started painting in oils, but that became a problem with my little ones, so gave up for 40 years. Lynn, my daughter in Australia took me to Bunnings, bought some canvasses and acrylic paints, left her with 3 paintings, an art teacher saw them and commended on the Red Pepper so - that was the beginning of an amazing journey. Your tutorials for water colours has opened up new horizons. Once again - many thanks for what you do.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Margaret. I'm glad you are enjoying them. We all need something to enjoy and take our mind off our troubles and painting in watercolour brings so much joy into my life. I hope it does you too. 💕
