Wishing all of you a happy weekend.

After painting Carl last weekend I knew I needed some more practice painting hair so I chose a simple photo that I thought I could manage. I posted this video on YouTube today.

It might help you if you struggle painting hair. I'm yet to try painting curly hair- that will be a challenge and a half.

I had a play last night with my face. It's not great. It's stiff looking and I can see that I struggled with it just by looking at the finished painting but it's my first portrait so I wanted to share it with you. I'll keep practicing. I do a funny thing with my mouth when I smile. I twist it to one side. It reminds me of my twisted spine 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️. I probably should have tried to straighten it in the painting but I didn't know what to do with it 😬.

The photo I used wasn't great. It was taken indoors with an iPhone and there's nothing interesting going on with the face. There's no great contrast between light and dark and I had to look really hard to see variation in the skintone. So I've decided that with any new portraits/people I paint I'm going to choose a reference photo where the subject is in the sun. The photo I used to paint Carl was much more interesting with all of those beautiful shadows on it. I should have realized that because I always prefer my subjects in the sun. I will keep at it!

What I'm working on:

I've painted a new elephant painting. It's the same as the elephant I painted a few weeks ago but I filmed all of it this time. It went fairly smoothly because I'd already painted it once. I'll be starting to edit the videos over the weekend.

I have finished editing the Giraffe video and I'm in the checking stage so I'll have that for you next week.

I also painted a simple pen and wash butterfly and moth in my watercolour journal so I'll edit the video of that little painting session and I'll make a tutorial for the beginners.

I am hoping to put a tutorial together soon of a simple painting (not sure what the subject will be yet) where I paint the same thing in both watercolour and acrylic. So .....if I paint a wren... I'll paint it in watercolour and then I'll paint the same wren in acrylic so you can see the difference  between the two mediums. That should be interesting.

Enjoy your weekend.

I was watching this! The photo is lovely and your painting is spot on!

Lori Jewett

Your portrait is fabulous -

Lori Jewett

looks just like you and I am amazed by your “first try’s” By the way, I do the exact same thing when I smile! We’ll have to start a twisted sisters club or something. 😉

Lydia Shemain

That’s amazing Louise. FANTASTIC. You can paint anything.

Susanne Wendt

It's beautiful! I love how you've captured the detail of your hair and left eye.

Patricia Nadarajah

Lovely painting! It’s so easy to overwork a painting, you should be proud, it’s very well rendered

Josephine Sinnamon

I am amazed for the first attempt. I love how you approached the hair. I think it is the neck area that perhaps could use more definition. The top is perfect and face.

Suzanne canner

Wonderful Louise. Am also, amazed for the first attempt.

Suzanne canner

Just watched your bloopers...your adorable!

Kathy Wilden

You did a great job on your portrait. I especially love the hair. Looking forward to more tutorials on portraits. Thank you Louise for sharing your knowledge with us.

shirley

I so like the way you share the critiques of your own work. As a novice I find it reassuring that we're all on the painting journey, forever learning, thanks 😸

Marianne BONZON

My son et me are smiling exactly so. We say it's an interior smile! 🙂 So we can joigned the club!😉

Susan

Absolutely stunning I'm so looking forward to the elephant and giraffe Thank you so much all the hard work you put into all of you lessons You're simply the best 🤗

Katherine Docherty

lovely portrait well explained. Tried to do a wee portrait of my new baby Grand daughter, the result was not great ,so I'm delighted you are Showing us how to do skin , hair etc. many thanks,Kathy

Stephanie Koski

So incredible, Louise! Thank you for all you do. I am learning so much.....do you by chance still have the pinned index of links to tutorials....I loved how it was categorized, and I am trying to decide which bird tutorial to do next---the index was wonderful, and so helpful. It could be somewhere else now, where I'm not seeing it. Thank you, Stephanie

Lynn Woodward

On the subject of hair, pulled-back hair is a challenge for me. Also, short hair in general, and short WHITE hair in particular. Don’t even want to think about frizzy white beards, but... if I practice on portraits for my brothers and sisters, that’s going to come up! LOL Louise, thanks for the tips!

Diane King

I like the fact that you narrowed your choice of colors down to a minimum, I have been adding too many to my paintings to get darks. Yours is so much softer and prettier. Thanks.

Diane King

Would you please paint a heron ? We have great blue herons and white herons in our neighborhood and I would love to see you paint one. I live on the coast of Georgia, USA and we have really beautiful coastal and shore birds. Our birds are not as colorful as yours, but they have their own charm. Thank you. Diane

Diane King

I loved the hair tutorial. You did an exceptional job on the colors. I tend to add too many colors to my portraits, especially darks. You helped me simplify. Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Stephanie. I've pinned it to the top of the Posts page but I think you only see it if you sign into Patreon through your web browser. If you're using the Patreon app or if you're on an iPad I don't think it's pinned. You can bookmark these links. This one is the written clickable Patreon index: https://www.patreon.com/posts/34865676 and this one is the index I have on my website where you can see images of the tutorials: http://www.louisedemasi.com/new-index Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Diane and yes I will. A heron is on my list of subjects to paint. I'll get to it soon!

Tina Dells

Thank you so much for sharing this, I so enjoyed watching it, I just love watching you paint and I am memorized by watching watercolor paint. I really appreciate how humble you are and your willingness to learn and to share your learning process with us. Thank you!

Stephanie Koski

Aha, thank you! I just realized that I was on my general feed in Patreon for the past several days, rather than your specific feed/homepage in Patreon. Since you are the only artist I'm following on Patreon (so far, I have just discovered Patreon), all of your posts were visible chronologically on my home feed except the pinned one. Thank you so much for replying. The index is a great help. Next tutorial I'm starting will be the sitting hummingbird. Blessed to have many pairs of these living in my yard---they love my salvia and fuchsia plants.

Alina Fazal Juma

Wow wow wow! I am sooo excited about ur new journey through watercolour portraits! It’s so fascinating to be part of the exploring process with you! I’ve always wanted to transfer my watercolour skills to portraits but been too nervous this is exactly what I needed! Super amazed by your self portrait! And rly rly excited about the upcoming giraffe and elephant tutorials!!! 💗

Alina Fazal Juma

Forgot to add my question 😅 I know you are in early days of your portrait learning - I just wanted to ask if you hope to explore different skin shades? I’ve attempted a portrait of my daughter and rly struggled with mixing a good skin tone - been searching online and sadly couldn’t find a tutorial to mix brown - south Asian skin tones :(

Louise De Masi

Hi Alina. Did you see my other post where I share my palette that I made up for skin tones? https://www.patreon.com/posts/38074737 You could try mixing some of the colours I have on my palette or if you don't have them use similar colours....2 different yellows, some earthy browns, I've got two reds- Alizarin Crimson and Permanent Rose and two blues. I've listed the colours on that post and how I mixed some of them together. Try mixing some combinations but add a little more of the earthy browns into the mix.

Donna Londot

Question a bit off topic but wasn’t sure how to ask you any other way . Do you have a tutorial about how to watercolor bark on. Pine or oak tree ? I sketched my tree and I glhabectgecfust layer of color and now I’m not sure how to create the texture . Thank you for your help ,You can email me also if that’s more Appropriate Donna@DonnaLondot.com

Donna Londot

I’m sorry spell check changed my words I meant to say I Sketched my tree and watercolored the first layer of color ...

Louise De Masi

Hi Donna, I don't I'm sorry as I'm still in the process of learning to paint landscapes/trees myself. I imagine I would paint a few layers of different colours -wet on wet and I'd try to leave areas of the previous wash showing through with each layer. Then when I was happy with the overall colour I'd dampen it again- wait until the water soaked in a little so it's not too wet and then I'd start to paint some of the deeper darker crevices on. I'd dry that layer off and then I'd add more detail over some of those crevices on dry paper. So I'd deepen the colour again and paint over some of the crevices I made on the slightly damp paper. I wouldn't paint the detail everywhere though. I'd leave areas where the paint had fuzzy edges. So to summarize, I'd work wet on wet to build up the colour. When I was happy with the colour I'd work on slightly damp paper to add the deeper darker crevices. When that was dry. I'd deepen and define some of the crevices on dry paper. I hope that helps. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Delores Lopez

This was a helpful piece.I liked how you built on the color so that the hair looked natural.I don't always comment, but I appreciate what I have been learning.I finally got proper supplies and have started a drawing of my own.

Margret Martin

Lovely portrait - hair looks natural, beautiful demonstration, Thank you!

Eve Eichner

Wow, great job with your hair. I always struggle so much!!! thank you!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Michelle. You can turn those off when you click on the CC button.

Michelle Wainer

That was great, thank you. Going to do a watercolor challenge of a person. Have never painted a person, hair or otherwise, so at least I have an idea on hair.

Dionne Conrad

Your portrait is awesome! I struggle with just the thought of painting people. Maybe one day I will give it a go, for now I’m going to stick with pets and flowers
