Hi everyone,

I hope you are having a good week. Here is the Giraffe tutorial. This painting is not all that difficult to do and it will give you good practice with brush control when you paint all the spots.

All of the files you need are attached below this message. I've included a larger version of the line drawing that is spread over two pages. If you have difficulty enlarging files for printing that should help you. Print them both off and tape them together and that drawing should then be the same size as my painting. There are two Supplies List files. One is a docx file and the other is a pdf. The pdf is included for those who can't open doc.x files on their computer.

House Keeping Note: I mention that I'm using Brown Ochre when I start painting the mane - I'm not, I'm using Burnt Sienna. Sorry- it was similar to a typo but it was a 'speech-o' 🥴. It slips out again when I paint one of the Ossicones - just ignore me. Thanks Linda for checking.

I will add this tutorial to the two indexes below.

I'm currently editing the Elephant tutorial.

Have fun. I hope you enjoy it!

Shelly Solle

Louise, you apply brown ocre in the first part of the video. What is brown ocre? It is not on the list.

Louise De Masi

Hi Shelly, I'm sorry, that was a slip of the tongue. Someone else picked me up on that. I wrote in the description below the video in the 'Housekeeping Note' that I was using Burnt Sienna. Sorry to confuse you. I'll re-edit this video and change the voice over next week.

Shelly Solle

Oops. I didn’t read the entire description, my bad. LOL.

Louise De Masi

That's ok- not your bad- my bad. I should have fixed it already! 😂🥰

Sue

Hello Louise, I did read your housekeeping notes saying you slipped and said brown ochre instead of burnt sienna, but you "show" a tube of burnt umber. So did you use burnt sienna or burnt umber? I'll be starting this giraffe soon and I'm so excited to start! Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Sue, I use Burnt Umber. It's on the Supplies List. I slipped and said Brown Ochre instead of Burnt Sienna. The colours listed on the supplies list are correct.

Sue

thank you!

Jane Talbot

I just have a question about shadows. I’m never sure when to paint them. Especially on animals. Do you always paint them first?

Louise De Masi

Hi Jane, Shadows can be tricky, and when to paint them really depends on the subject. For animals with distinct markings, like spots or stripes (giraffes or zebras), I tend to paint the shadows first. This is because adding shadows after painting the spots or stripes can disturb the dried paint, especially since darker colours lift more easily. On other subjects, I might leave the shadows until the end, but with dark, detailed areas, it's often best to save them for last to avoid accidental lifting.

Linda

I’m half way through this painting and loving the process. My blending and softening of edges has improved and it is a joy to be able to see progress, Louise🥰👍🏻.

Paula Davis

Just have to try this one! Did lil sketch & can tell it’s a giraffe but not in proportion and such interesting animals to paint!

Louise De Masi

They sure are! I love painting them. I need to do another one. Have fun Paula.

Julie Smout

Thank you for a great tutorial , I enjoyed every minute. Julie

Minx493

EXCELLENT!!! Thank you!!

Christine Ellis

Can’t wait to try this. Thank you Louise. 😘

Kate

Wouldn't be upset if a lion tutorial was in the works to go with the other African animals!

Marion Aitken

Looks amazing cant wait to try !! :-)

Hotflash Vickie

My sister-in-law was raised by doctor/missionaries, and I can't WAIT to paint this 3 times till I finally get it right in time for, say, Christmas!!!

Jane Newman

Such great teaching! It isn’t just do as I do, but you explain techniques that go beyond into other paintings we may do. Thanks for all you put into your tutorials❤️

Monica Rainbow

Absolutely gorgeous, thank you Louise.

Marijke de Boer

Lovely colours as always! I really like it and a huge thank you for inspiring us. I can't help but keep thinking of that lovely seal you showed us a while back. Are you still planning to do a tutorial on the seal?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Marijke. I forgot about that seal! I think I'd like to paint another one. That one took me a long time which would make it a really long tutorial. So I'll look for a simpler one that won't take as long.

Patricia Gundersen

Please tell me how to find the outline for the Skillshare giraffe? I joined Skillshare to paint the giraffe but I can’t find the outline.

Louise De Masi

It's on the Projects and Resources page Patricia with all the other files. You won't see it if you are using the Skillshare app. I don't think you see it on an iPad either. You need to sign into Skillshare through your internet browser...Safari, Firefox, Chrome....whatever you use.

Lydia Shemain

Fantastic, stunning. Louise, this is beautiful. I know you did not use it here, but you’re an expert at mixing colours. How do I mix an Aussie Red Gold. Thanks. Quin Gold is more yellow. Aussie RedGold is more orange. Could I add orange to Quin Gold. Thanks.

Louise De Masi

Hi Lydia, Thank you! Yes I'd try that. Mix either some red or some orange into Quinacridone Gold.

Karen James

It is mesmerizing to watch your paint with your fabulous brush. Love the intro story about your living in Sydney and going to the zoo. Thank you for your easy to follow tutorial.

Cinthia Teague

This was so very interesting and fun. It turned out so great, and makes me smile every time I look at it. Thanks. Maybe I'll do a series with the Zebra and the Elephant. I just wish the Zebra was just a face too.

Shellee Hoyt

Awesome tutorial as always! I love trying your paintings.

Iona Treeby Ward

Thanks for this tutorial. I love the technique how you painted the spots.

Tina Walker

Thanks for this tutorial, giraffes are beautiful. You don’t have a tutorial of the full face giraffe I’ve seen on a couple of your tutorials, or the one of the two giraffes on your wall? They are both absolutely gorgeous!

LINDA DORSEY

Hi Louise, I’m doing the mane on the giraffe and you mention using brown ochre for the first wash, did you mean to say burnt sienna instead? Brown ochre is not listed in the supplies list. Thanks for your feedback.

Louise De Masi

Hi Linda, Whoops! Sorry about the confusion. Yes it's Burnt Sienna. I have all these colour names swimming around in my head. 🥴 💕

LINDA DORSEY

Psst - you did it again painting the second ossicone. I think you were on a roll. Hahaha you did use that color for the Skillshare giraffe.

Louise De Masi

Lol.... 😂 sorry. I must have used it on the previous painting before this one. It was still in my brain. Just ignore my senior moments. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Elena Silveira

Louise, I really enjoy painting the giraffe, a pleasure, I don t know where share it, my paint.

Michelle Michaud

This was fun. I love giraffes and had painted one before but it was too flat - no shadows. This was a good exercise for me in looking for the shadows. Thanks. Will have to try the Zebra one next.

Renee Howard Cassese

I usually don't paint animals other than birds (and your Brahmin cow) as they intimidate me. But I am drawn to try this giraffe. I am reading the book "West with Giraffes" about 2 African giraffes brought to the San Diego Zoo in California so I got inspired. Your tutorials are so well done and your instruction is so detailed I"m pretty sure I can pull this off.

Louise De Masi

Hi Elena, I'm so sorry I missed your message. There is no place to share your painting on Patreon unfortunately which is why I started the private Facebook group where students can share their paintings. Let me know if you'd like the link.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Renee! That sounds like an interesting book. You can do it. Take your time. 💕

Renee Howard Cassese

Yes, the book was fabulous. Thank you for the encouragement. I started this yesterday and so far I am pleased with the results. I'll finish it up today--told my hubby I have a date with a giraffe this afternoon. LOL
