Hi everyone,

I hope your week has started well. I've just come back inside after chasing the neighbour's cows off my new native garden.....phew! They managed to get through a hole in the fence and of course the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.....naughty girls.

I got a delivery today of some new brushes from Rosemary and Co so I thought I'd open them with you. Christine a patron here gave them a good review so after checking the prices of them I ordered a few to try them out. Thanks for the recommendation Christine.

I'll need to paint with them quite a few times in order to compare them properly with the Da Vinci Maestros that I use but if they are comparable they are quite a bit cheaper so here's hoping 🤞🏻.

Ok....back to editing now. I'm working on the elephant tutorial today.

Enjoy your week.

Louise

I’m so excited you are trying them. It’s funny I literally get excited every time I pick up my size 6 round series 22 and my size 10 series 33. Just the feel of them when they are dry just so soft and then the amount of water and pigment they hold !! I know silly right to get so worked up over a brush but I just think they are the best and a large part I feel just bc of reading about how they got started and you almost feel like one of the family once you order. Rosemary is very responsive to messages etc and you can tell this business is her life and you just feel the passion she puts into each and every brush they sell. Ok so seriously I don’t work for the company etc lol 😂 they just really impressed me. I truly hope they work for you bc Lord knows saving a little money here and there is well worth it. Ok so I’ll stop going on and on about rosemary and company but when I saw this post pop up I just had to respond. Lol 😂 And you’re welcome now I just hope you like them best wishes and happy painting 🥰💕

It will be interesting to hear your review of these brushes Louise. You know you're alive after you chase cows out of a garden :))

Louise De Masi

Thanks Christine! I know exactly what you mean. A good brush is so important and makes such a difference to your painting. I'm sure I'll enjoy using them just as much as my Maestros. 💕

I have some of the miniature brushes from Rosemary and Co. Love them! And I found a US distributor which is very helpful for shipping costs.

Alina Fazal Juma

Great can’t wait to hear about these! Love the cow story 😅

Sheridan

Perfect timing! I was just trying to decide which Rosemary & Co line to try - red sable or kolinsky. I've tried their sable blend set and have been enjoying it. It's a great set for beginners who want to try a step up from synthetic. Now that I am a bit more experienced I really want to try a pure Kolinsky to see the difference. Your series 8 looks like it has a very fine point so that should work!

Susanne Wendt

use the Rosemary & Co brushes size 5, 3, 1, 0 and 000, as my initial journey into water colour painting started with Anna Mason and they're the brushes she recommended. I love them. It's amazing how often that tiny little 000 gets used for fiddly work! I'm using them with your tutorials Louise as I don't have the Maestro brushes.

Elaine

Like Susanne I also started with Anna Mason, so I got the Rosemary & Co brushes. They are my favourite brushes, I absolutely love them 😍

Basia

Fantastic Brushes & a great company - I have Anna Mason & Kolinsky Sable brushes....all wonderful to use .... looking forward to the review 🤗

Andrea G.

Another fan of the Anna Mason set. I’m able to get very crisp lines, even with the larger brushes and they hold a fair amount of water. I’m currently working through your hydrangea tutorial with them, Louise and they’re working well. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on how they compare to the Maestros. :)

Thank you so much for this information. I purchased last week my first Maestro brush (size 3). I have been using Silver Brush Co. Black Velvet which I like very much. But I have to say I find something about that Maestro is growing on me. Perhaps its that the flow of water and pigment is more even? Or that small extra bit of stiffness? I cannot say but I am loving the brush. But not the prices. I do look forward to hearing from you on your verdict for these.

Cassandra Kinlyside

I also have the Anna Mason set and they are absolutely wonderful brushes. I love them.

Denise Hems

Looking forward to the elephant tutorial

Terry Gray

I have also ordered some of the same brushes and waiting for their arrival. Can't wait to try them out!

Linda Moore

Sherie, Please, may I ask, who is your US distributor?

Sherie McManaman

https://www.windriverarts.com/index.htm Above is the link. You have to call or email them to order, but they were very responsive. I ordered on a Friday and received my brushes on Monday! But they are also in the same state as I am, so that helped. I will definitely order from them again as I enlarge my brush inventory.

So glad there is someone else who can relate to a good cow story! While I was going to school, many moons ago, I drove up the driveway only to find it filled with cows! They were EVERYWHERE across the "front yard"! Apparently someone hadn't fastened a gate enclosure well enough and presto-chango -- a welcoming party!! Picture it, the city girl running around trying to herd cattle away from the road and back into the cattle pen! Quite comical!! 😄 🐄 🐄🐄 I don't think I ever forgave everyone else for being gone to a sale that morning! I am looking forward to seeing what you think of the Rosemary and Co brushes! Good Luck!

Alana Plesner

Hi! I ordered some Rosemary and Co brushes last year and I love them. In the US we can order some of the styles from Wind River Art's to save on shipping. I have some series 22's in size 2 and 4.

Have you had any success with any of the vegan brushes out there. There are so many. I am using escoda prado, sintetico, anna mason Rosemary & Company and da Vinci Spin-synthetic mop. Do you think getting 1 good sable would make MUCH of a difference?

Marijke de Boer

I am also curious about brushes too. I only use vegan brushes (and vegan paint preferably) and I wonder if there is a lot of difference? I really am happy with the vegan paints but have not worked a non-vegan brush as yet. Is there a huge difference?

Victoria Scrooby

We need to see video proof of you chasing the cows next time....haha

Louise De Masi

I used to use synthetic brushes when I first started painting in watercolour but it's been a few years since I've used them. I should buy a set to remember what it's like painting with them. Once I switched to the natural hair brushes I stopped buying them. I'm still using the same natural haired brushes that I bought 5 years ago. I've read that when you look at the Kolinsky sable hairs under a microscope they have a really fine point on the end and then the hair widens and thins again. They are perfect for water media because of the way the watery paint flows through them and less reloading is needed. When they are wet they reform their shape perfectly.

Louise De Masi

It's been about 5 years since I used synthetic brushes. I should buy a good set of acrylic brushes and reacquaint myself with them so I can answer you with confidence. I still have my early synthetic brushes but I always reach for the sables now. Which synthetic brand do you favour over others?

Louise De Masi

Lol- I have proof they keep coming onto our place. They were back over here today - the whole herd! Our neighbour came over on his tractor to herd them back. I've posted a little video on my Instagram story. 😝

I ordered Rosemary & Co brushes from Jackson and they did not charge for shipping.

5 Flavors

I use her brushes as well and they seem to work. I like that they are vegan.

5 Flavors

I've mostly used Escoda brand, both their perla and prado lines. Also , like many others above, i like the anna mason set (5,3,1,00,000) synthetics for details. She calls them spotters. I was tempted to try the black velvet but am sticking with vegan for now.

For people not in th EU, is anyone seeing problems getting W&N pan watercolors? Jerry Artarama has many on back order and does not sell full pans. The Jackson site said they can not send to non EU addresses and offers 10%off a different product. Is anyone else seeing this?

Prairie Heather

I think they are made in Seattle. At this time there is much political unrest there. If I am correct in that, it could explain why there might be a limited amount getting out just now. I am not sure though.

5 Flavors

think Daniel Smith is made in Seattle, but you are probably right about current chaos, people are probably painting more and manufacturing less. I am going to contact W&N to get their take. Thanks for responding.

Margret Martin

I have the eradicators and love them! I have a few other brushes from them as well, including travel brushes. Great company/service, etc.

Elaine Unger

Cheap Joes in the US sells winsor newton half pans as well as tubes. They can only ship to US, Canada and Caribbean. Dick Blick sells tubes 5 ml, 15ml and some 37 ml.

Shelly Solle

I personally love the Isabey 6227z. I wish I had started out with them from the beginning. I now have about 30 brushes that I won’t use.

Ali B

For what it’s worth, I tried the Black Velvet Silver brushes and really dislike them. Louise, if you’re keen to try them I’ll happily post them to you!!

Ali B

Louise, have you had a chance to try the brushes? Would be keen to know your thoughts. I love my W&N Series 7 kolinsky sable (size 5) best of any brush I’ve ever used, but they’re horrendously expensive, especially for the larger ones. So keen to know if theres

Ali B

...oops hit return by accident... any other brushes that come close. 😊

Louise De Masi

Thanks Ali. I'll let you all know what I think when I paint with them more.

Trish Hawrys

Anyone here from Canada and ordered the Rosemary and Co brushes? just curious where you ordered them from and if shipping and exchange were reasonable.

5 Flavors

In the end I just purchased Da Vinci earth friendly set and will fill the pans myself. Got a mix of half and full pans so my more common colors can have more room to spread out. Will report back

Lydia Frazier Bosley

I'm searching for the cow-chasing video, can't find it so far!

Louise De Masi

😂 Lol..... I was in too much of a hurry to get the camera out - they were stomping all over my plants. 😝

Joyce C

I'm in the US, Minnesota. I'd also like to explore ordering from Rosemary and Co. Anyone?

Louise De Masi

Hi Joyce, As I mentioned here I ordered from them and had no problem with the delivery. If you are a member of the Facebook group I have you could mention your query there. I'm sure someone will have some information for you.

Joyce C

Louise, you’re so kind and attentive. Thank you.

Joyce C

I found Rosemary and Co brushes at Studio Pintura In Minneapolis, MN, USA. They came within 3 days! I got eradicator brushes that work very well.

Else Rasmussen

Hi Louise. I am new here, from Denmark. About brushes: I was member at www.saa.com.us for artist ( I just paint for fun ) before Britain left the EU, maybe you can get something cheaper there. They have everythingl a painter could wish for. Kind regards Else Rasmussen
