Hi everyone,

Here is the Kookaburra tutorial.

This is a fairly simple painting that shouldn't take too long to complete.

This is one of the Kookaburras that hang around place. I love watching them and hearing their laugh (although not so much at 6.00 in the morning when they are sitting on the guttering right near my bedroom window 😳.) They are a very patient bird. They'll sit quietly on a branch or on some electrical wire for ages. They watch the ground looking for movement and they'll swoop down to the ground whenever they see a grasshopper or other insect.

Below my message here are all the files you need to complete the painting. I have included a photo of my finished painting as well as a scan of it. The scan seemed to wash out some of the grey on the head so I thought you'd be able to see it better if I gave you a photo as well.

I have enlarged the line drawing over two pages. It's the same size as the painting I did. If you need it any larger and don't know how to enlarge it send me a message and I'll see what I can do.

I hope you enjoy painting it.

I'll put it on the two indexes so you can find it when you are ready to paint it.

I received an email this morning to tell me that my three paintings have been accepted in the local art exhibition/competition I entered. I'll be taking them down to the exhibition on Friday. I hope to take some video footage of the exhibition and if I can I'll share it with you later this month.

Thanks!

Hi Louise, I've seen you use Naples Yellow a fair bit and I was wondering if you could explain why you are choosing that particular yellow in your paintings. It's one that I don't have and I was wondering what's different about it.

Louise De Masi

Hi Chloe, Naples yellow is more subdued in colour than Winsor Lemon which I normally use. I felt Winsor Lemon or other bright yellows might have been a bit too harsh or bright here. If you don't have it try using Raw Sienna or something like that that's a little more earthy. Otherwise use the yellow you do have because you only need a tiny bit of it. You could try it on a scrap piece of paper. Drop some yellow into your grey and see what it looks like. If you don't like it leave it off altogether.

Chloe McNie

Thanks Louise :) I see that Naples yellow has titanium white mixed into it. Is it desirable that that makes it more opaque or does that not make much difference?

Louise De Masi

I'm not sure about the Titanium White Chloe. What I know about the different transparencies is that opaque watercolour paints can be made transparent and transparent watercolour paints can be made opaque depending on the amount of water you mix with them so I never worry myself too much about whether a pigment is opaque or transparent. I don't do a lot of mixing of colours so it rarely effects my work.

Marijke de Boer

Hi Louise, congratulations and I look forward seeing the video. I love the kookaburra (but keep spelling it wrong....):)

Chantelle Venter

Congrats on the acceptance of your paintings. I can only imagine how beautiful they are, Crossing fingers that you win :) Thank you for another beautiful tutorial xxx

Oh, I can't wait for the owl . . . it has always been one of my favorite YouTube videos. Love this Kookaburra too! Have a wonderful day, stay safe and be well.

Susan

I'm in love I absolutely love love kookaburras x

Eleanor

This was terrific. I need to stretch some paper, but then I'm going to give it a try.

crystalheart9

Love the Kookaburras. It was really helpful on how to paint the fluffy feathers. I wonder if there are any free photos out there for a starving hobby artist. It's so expensive to purchase photos to work from.

Louise De Masi

Thank you! Try Pixabay for free photos and also a site called 'Paint my Photo'.

Julia Hales

Well done on getting so many paintings into the exhibition. Your work is always beautifully executed and full of life and joy. This tutorial is lovely and conveniently I had already sketched a kookaburra, but I was procrastinating about how to move forward and commence the painting. Thank you for motivating me.

Jessie Doherty

It's really helpful to watch your Youtube video, now I can't wait to get to this one.

Frances

Congratulations from me too Louise! I live not far away in Armidale and am just down here at Sawtell having a break from the cold weather at home. I’m busy painting your yellow robin today🙂. Could you tell me when the exhibition is on so I can come to admire your beautiful paintings in person? That would be such a treat! Thanks

Louise De Masi

Hi Frances (neighbour!) I hope you're relaxing in Sawtell. What beautiful weather we've had this weekend. The exhibition is on level 2 of Coffs Central. That's in the mall. The exhibition opens the 18th September through to th 17th October.

Frances

Thanks Louise. I’ll be sure to go there to have a look. Exciting! And thanks for replying💐🙂

Jan Sonneman

Painted the Kookaburra and have lots of compliments. Thanks, great tutorial

Shelly Solle

Going to give the ol' Kookaburra a try. The biggest problem is that the song keeps running through my head. Ugh

Delta Daiz

Congratulations Louise! Good luck!

Karleen Maughan

seriously - I can't get it out of my head either. What is a "gum tree" anyway ?? Louise - can you shed light on that?

Louise De Masi

Hi Karleen, over here in Australia we call eucalyptus trees 'gum trees'. Quoting Wikipedia "'gum tree' is a common name for smooth-barked trees and shrubs in three closely related genera of Eucalypt: Eucalyptus, Corymbia and Angophora." I don't think all Eucalyptus trees are 'gum trees' but most of us Aussies call all Eucalyptus trees gum trees. Many of them ooze thick red resin and I'm not sure but I think that may be why we refer to them as gum trees.

Cindy Roberts

Loved this tutorial. One of my favorites to do. Thank you!

Annika

Wonderful tutorial . So much fun to paint this!!!! Thanks ! :)

Michelle Michaud

I really did enjoy this tutorial. My bird didn't come out half bad. I visited Australia in 2017 and loved it. Would move there if I could. I love birds so especially love your watercolor bird videos.

Pooiyue

Thank you, Louise. I love this Kookaburra painting of yours. I tried to paint it one for myself. I love it .

Vee

Thank you Louise! I am so very far behind with all your super tutorials, but I love wading my way through all the greatness. And of course, there are those that I do 3 or 4 times before they look half decent! Thank you for all the happy hours I spend on your great demos - you are an amazing teacher! xxx

Carol Crawford Barfield

Hi Louise! I have traced my kookaburra on 9x12 paper. What brush sizes would you recommend for this smaller version of the bird? I have the da Vince Maestro Series 35 brushes. I'm thinking if you used a #7, I could use #5. When you used #5, I could use #3, and when you used # 3 on the eye, I could use a #1. Thank you. P.S. - I love this painting!

Louise De Masi

Hi Carol, I'd still use a #2 and the #5. A #3 might be useful too. You may even find that you could use a #7 at the start. If it's too big drop down to the #5.

Carolyn Zamora

I just finished my adorable kookaburra. Thank you so very much Ms. Di Masi for this fun tutorial. I so appreciate your talent and how you share and teach so wonderfully. You'll make a painter out of me yet.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Carolyn. Lol......I hope so 😂. Thank you!

Marlene J Koslowsky

I am going to attempt this bird and won't mind at all if its laugh runs through my head the whole time! If I could get on a plane and fly half way (more?) across the world, this would be the first thing I'd want to see in your amazing country! Ill settle for a painting or two! 😀

Louise De Masi

Lol- They are iconic Aussie birds and we love them. As I type this I can hear them laughing.😅❤️
