Hi everyone,

Here is the Lotus (water lily) tutorial.

You'll need some patience with this painting so take your time with it. There's a few layers to paint. Most of it is painted on wet or damp paper. I used cold pressed paper but use hot pressed if you prefer.

All of the files you need are attached below my message here. I have enlarged the drawing again and spread it over two pages for those who are not sure how to enlarge when printing.

I downloaded the reference photo from Pixabay. The photo was taken by Cristel Sagniez and the link to download it is on the Supplies List.

I will put this tutorial on the two indexes so you can find it again when you want to try painting it.

I'll get working on the cat tutorials now. Lots to do!

Have fun!

Louise

Louise, can you work on Youtube the video its easier for me for subtitles, saludos!

Louise De Masi

Hi Mario, I'm sorry I have to put the videos on Vimeo because unlisted videos on YouTube aren't safe from poachers. Those that know how can access them and download them. On Vimeo people can't do that - they are safe there.

Elaine

This is so pretty Louise, thank you 💕😊

Cassandra Hill

Beautiful! I was waiting for a bloom somewhere ;)

Debbie Smith

I am so excited! I love this one, and I am ready for another flower painting! Thank you, Louise!

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Just had to stop partway through and say what a pleasure it is watching the lotus come to life - it may be a while before I feel up to replicating it, but I am always entertained by your genius, Louise!

Deborah Bell Christian

I learned so much from watching you paint this. Thank you for the explanations as you paint. You are quite an artist! The finished lotus was absolutely amazing!

Emma Louise Ireland

This is just absolutely stunning Louise! I really like how you put the reference images up when your painting, it's so hopeful so be able to see what you're doing at the same time. Thank you. ❤️

Jessie Doherty

Can't wait for the tutorial to come out, I did this twice already by following your Youtube videos...now it's great to watch the entire tutorial!

Laura Etchemaite-Walborn

Thank you Louise, this is another masterpiece of you! My watercolor skills have improved so much since I follow you on Patreon!

Emma Louise Ireland

This tutorial is beautiful. I love that you add the enlarged line drawings too. I like to paint my images quite big so this is perfect for me. Thank you for sharing it. ❤️

CATS??!?!! Did someone say CATS? I didn't think I could love you more!

Kim Hoffmann

How the heck do I find a list of the courses I can choose from?? No search. No course list?? Grrr

Kari Howry

Amen !! You cant have too many cats!!

Lydia Shemain

This is so beautiful. The colours are gorgeous. Painting such detail demands a lot of patience. It is absolutely beautiful. Thanks Louise.

Kelle Luoma

Love this Louise, been eagerly waiting to paint this one! One question, I noticed that when you wet the petals, you don't quite go to the edge. Is this a deliberate choice? If so, what is the reasoning behind it? Thank you :)

Louise De Masi

Hi Kelle, I hope you enjoy it. I have discovered that when you take the water all the way to the edge sometimes you might get a hard line of darker paint along the edge, especially if you are new to painting in watercolour. Keeping it in, a brush stroke from the edge, tends to stop that from happening. I'm trying to remember to do that when I can so that newbies won't get the dark edges. It sometimes happens if I drop other colours into a wet wash. If you keep the edges a bit dryer the pigment won't flow out there so much.

Kelle Luoma

Thank you! I had noticed that happening myself, and started to move back on my own when I dont want that tiny hard line. I'm happy to see that I reasoned through it correctly :)

crystalheart9

Beautiful painting and I learned a lot watching your tutorial. Thanks so much!

Vee

This was well above my expertise but I enjoyed the process. And my lotus is not at all bad! Thank you for your detailed explanations of every step - it is a life-line.

Marika Roth

Can't wait to try this one. What can be substituted for permament rose? I have opera pink and several reds.

Louise De Masi

Hi Marika, Try Quinacridone Rose or Alizarin Crimson. If you haven't got those, try the reds you have and see which one looks more pink when it's pale. Be aware that Opera Rose is fugitive which means it isn't lightfast. I use Opera Rose sometimes as a glaze over the top of areas that I want to brighten. You could try that if you aren't concerned about it not being lightfast. Use one of your reds (paint it on pale) and then try glazing Opera Rose over the top. Try it on a piece of scrap paper to see what you think.
