Hi everyone,

I hope you are well.

Here is the eye study tutorial. As you know I'm trying to teach myself how to paint the human figure in watercolour so I thought it would be a good idea to practice painting different body parts like the eye, nose, mouth, ear, hands etc. This is a detailed look at the eye and I know that if I was painting a portrait, the eye wouldn't be as large as it is here and I wouldn't need  the same amount of detail that I have here. Nevertheless I thought it was a good idea to have a look at it more closely. I will try to do some smaller studies and paint the eye from different angles and also paint different skin colours.

What I learned from this study is that it's important to pay attention to the edges - are they soft and lost or are they hard and sharp? I think next time I paint an eye I'll add more soft edges. Looking at it, I feel I need to soften the edges of the top and bottom lids more as they move away from the centre point of the eye. I'll try that next time.

I'm excited to try painting more people. I painted the little toddler on the beach and while I was fairly happy with the painting I feel I overworked the hair again. It's not easy painting humans but it's lots of fun trying.

I hope you enjoy painting/watching this little study. All of the files you need are attached below. If you need me to enlarge the eye drawing over two pages let me know.

I downloaded the reference photo from Pixabay. It was taken by Sofie Zborilova.

I tweaked the colour in Photoshop before I painted it because I think the photo must have been digitally enhanced and I wasn't keen on the yellow in the iris. The link for the photo is also on the Supplies List.

Here is the post that I did where I've listed all the colours that are on my skin tone palette: https://www.patreon.com/posts/38074737

What I'm working on

I'm currently working on the Budgerigar tutorial. After that I'll start on the Fuchsia tutorial.

Over the coming weeks I also have a Robin, the blue Succulent, the Bee Eater, the Barn Owl, the Lion (below) and this snake (below) to get done.....maybe the little toddler painting too if I feel it's worthy.

Hi Louise! I LOVED this tutorial! I just completed my first painting of the eye and can't wait to try it again.

Really enjoyed this video. I have a tendancy to go a little overboard with eyelashes, this helped tremendouslyOk

Louise De Masi

I'm glad. Thanks Betsy. I think it's best to not think of them as eyelashes and think of them as a shape instead. Try not to paint all of them as individual lashes with a fine brush. Often there are areas where they clump together and form a shape.

Great tips!

I just watched the eye tutorial- thank you Louise! I love how you mixed and layered colors and attended to such detail. I have been trying my hand at portraits lately and thought I should see how you approach the eyes. I’m so glad I did. I feel confident in moving forward with my painting now!

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Janis and thank you! Good luck with your painting. 🥰

Love this Louise. I am curious what colors do you have on your skin pallette. Will create one for myself to go with the human journal i am creating. Can't wait for a hands tutorial. Thank you so much.

Great Eye Louise, I am also keen to learn more about painting the human face in watercolour, there are very few watercolour teachers who tackle this difficult subject & I am eager to see more of your studies & how you develop your style in this regard. The Lion....😍...A stunning painting, I am so looking forward to painting this 🤩

Lori

Oh Louise, this is WONDERFUL!!!! I have wanted to learn how to paint the human eye and faces in general, so I am thrilled to learn "the Louise way"!!! I also wanted to thank you for the tip about getting the gummed tape off your board by putting it in the tub! It works like a charm and no more scraping with the razor knife!!! I am excited to paint the cat tutorials too. Thank you for being such a great teacher!

I'm happy to try this Louise! It will be helpful with dog portraits too and animal paintings. I can't wait to try your lion and snake, and everything!

Hanna

Hi, Louise! After painting a few eyes I found out this one video here. Would it be possible to offer more human figures videos? Thx

Hanna

any substitute for cadmium red?

Louise De Masi

Hi Hanna, yes that's my plan. I'd like to add more this year.

Louise De Masi

Use whatever warm red you have Hanna. It doesn't have to be Cad Red.
