Hi everyone,

I hope you are well, keeping busy and getting some time to paint.

Here is the Cat with Butterfly tutorial…..(it’s not too difficult.)

For this painting I used two reference photos that I downloaded from Pixabay.

I’ve put a link to each photo on the Supplies List.

I’ve also attached them here:

Cat: https://pixabay.com/photos/cat-pussy-feline-pussy-cloud-5098930/

Butterfly: https://pixabay.com/photos/butterfly-insects-blue-wings-1938978/

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

I have included an enlarged version of the line drawing that is spread over two pages for those who have difficulty enlarging files to print. Print them and then line them up and tape them together. As always, there are two supplies lists - one is a docx file and the other is a pdf. I include the pdf because some people can't open docx files.

I will try to paint this as a wedding present for a friend with the colours of her kitty. Hope it all goes well ❤️ it was such a calming video to watch! Thanks Louise!

Lynn Benn

Thank you Louise for another fabulous tutorial. It will be a great companion to your other cat painting which I also enjoyed painting so very much.

crystalheart9

Beautiful work, the kitty turned out fantastic. Love how you paint shadows with lovely color variations. Thanks for this I enjoyed it so much.

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Just finished watching the kitty & butterfly for the first time, thanks so much Louise! Cats (and horses) are my favorite domestic animals so I am glad you are providing cat models to follow, I won't ask you to attempt horses as I know you already have plenty of projects lined up... and of course you've already done the zebra! Thanks for all the time you spend on keeping your students occupied, it is much appreciated!

Liliana Klass

Hi Louise. I see you used pencil to stress edges. When I used my pencil it left a shine on the paper. What lead do you use that doesn’t leave a shine? I hope you are well and healthy!

Louise De Masi

Hi Liliana, I use ordinary graphite. I have a Steadtler mechanical pencil that I use normally. If graphite isn't working for you some artists like to use watercolour pencils very lightly.

*sigh* I went into a kind of trance - transported to another place! - watching you paint this kitty and butterfly Louise ;-) I have to say, since finding your tutorials I seem to have found an inner peace which is helping me in these difficult times - I do so hope others find this also. I plan to do the dragonflies first - and then this one before moving to the hydrangeas. Thank you for your hard work, keep well.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Nettie. That makes me feel very happy. You keep well too. 💕

Phyllis Baecker

I love this painting! Another exceptional tutorial. Thank you!

Trish Hawrys

This is sooo whimsical and pretty <3 If I want to change the eyes to green do you have any suggestions to pick a green ? cool or warm ? should I use it in the butterfly and background as well ?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Trish. You could use a pale Sap Green or something like that. Or any green really- cool or warm - your choice, but I wouldn't got too dark. It would be great to see what it looks like with a green butterfly and background but it's not necessary.

Trish Hawrys

Thank you Louise, my kitty looks a little possessed right now LOL I used Sap with a tiny bit of perylene on the edges ! I'll post a photo when he's finished.

Pauline Ferguson

Just painted this little guy for my friend's birthday. I just love him. Thanks Louise you are a great teacher, i have followed you, left you, tried others but come back to you. I have just about painted everything you have to offer. Love the way you paint.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Pauline. I hope your friend loves it too. I'm glad you're back!

My daughter-in-law is expecting a baby girl in April. I want to paint this for the baby! I have been searching for one and this is perfect! I have Quin Rose PV19, Magenta PR122, Quin Pink PV42, Quin Magenta PR122 in different brands of watercolor. But not a WN permenant rose. I will have to look this one up to see what to substitute. I feel its been a while since I painted. Fostered a kitten for over two months and it was like having a baby! Kept me real busy...LOL

Louise De Masi

Congratulations Patricia. Not long to wait now! I don't use a lot of pink. It's mainly on the nose and I put a little of it in the fur too I think. Maybe use Quin rose or Quin pink. 💕

Hi Louise, I'm working my way through your tutorials and I'm loving it. I have started this tutorial and I thought that watching you painting and comparing the progress photos they seem a lot darker than your finished painting. Is this because this is a print of your painting? The value of the grey wash seems a lot darker when you are actually painting, is this because of lighting? My first stage looks like the first progress photo however doesn't correlate with your final painting. Your final painting appears to be much lighter in the body, so perhaps I need to use a much lighter wash that reveals more white paper? Also do you use natural white Arches/Fabriano or brilliant white. My apologies....lots of questions. I absolutely adore your technique and your paintings are inspirational. cheers Kx

Louise De Masi

Hi Kay, Thank you! The progress photos are photos that I take with my phone and they can look a bit darker than they are in real life. The final painting is a scan that I have made of my final painting. I clean up the background and make it really white in Photoshop and that makes the colours pop. I also have to tweak the colours slightly in Photoshop on the scan of the painting because they differ a little bit from the actual painting. I try to make the scans as true to the finished painting as I can. Perhaps I should include a photo of my finished painting with my tutorials as well. I use natural white watercolour paper. 💕

Kay Wolfs

Thank you for responding so quickly Louise. I did just run the tute from the beginning and saw that you do have your painting up for a short while. I think that it must be the variation in the images taken by your phone. I will make sure in future that I really lower the value of the wash...I should have realised this when looking at the photo because the cat is predominately white and your finished painting reflects this. I have decided to work my way through all of your tutorials. I am a devoted fan. I just finished the green succulent as I hope eventually to paint my own specimens using your wonderful technique. cheers Kx

Yumi Rager

Hi Louise! I painted this kitty twice following your instructions. I love the movement in this picture, that captures the cat's excitement, and the expert placing of unexpected color (permanent rose) in the fur that communicates the cuddly fur. Can you tell I love cats? But I would love more animals in action, as opposed to portrait or specimen style. How about a bird about to land or about to take off? My next one will be the hummingbird in flight. Thank you for your excellent tutorials and generously given tips!

Дива Пешеходка

The video and explanations were great! It will be great also, if you make more tutorials for drawing cats. Thank you!

Patricia Douglas

Sitting down now to work on the cat! I procrastinated with many other projects and watercolor. Baby due next week! First time being a grandma! I will use Quin Rose. I love that color. Thanks Louise!

Louise De Masi

Congratulations!! That's wonderful news. You will love being a grandma. I knew I'd love my little grandson but I don't think I realised how deep that love would be. 💕

Patricia Douglas

Isn't that funny? I felt before my second child was born that I hope I could love this child as much as my first! What a silly thought it was!!! OF COURSE I could and do! So, yes, I am very excited: today is the due date but we are waiting patiently And I waited to be a grandma and so glad it will be here any day now! I finished the cat, posted without the whiskers on Facebook! LOL But finished the whiskers and posted again. Hope all is well!

Olivia

Loved painting this cat!

Yvonne Walton

Hi Louise I was wondering 💭 I have just seen a very old video of yours where you were doing a fox and you had also done a raccoon and other animals that are not on here. Where can I find these tutorials please. I do enjoy all the paints that I have done from here. Thank you for all your wonderful classes

Louise De Masi

Hi Yvonne, I have a fox video on Skillshare and I plan to paint another one for Patreon. A fox is on my list of subjects to paint for Patreon. I don't have a raccoon tutorial I'm sorry. All of my tutorials on Patreon are on the indexes. I don't have any more other than the 13 tutorials I have on Skillshare. Thanks. 💕
