Hi everyone,

Here is the Budgerigar tutorial.

Some patience is required with this one with all of the black markings so take your time when you paint them. I used Lamp Black. I thought there was enough to do without worrying about mixing some black paint.

I tried out Langton Prestige watercolour board for the first time with this painting. It's made by Daler Rowney. I found it quite a good surface to paint on. The paint goes on well and the colours are vibrant when they are dry. However, I got in a patchy mess in one section of the painting right up underneath the yellow cheek feathers on the right hand side. The green paint lifted and became patchy so I had to leave it alone and come back later and add a bit more colour when it was completely dry. I'm glad it was bird feathers I was painting and not human skin. I cut a full sheet of this board into quarters for this painting so I have three more pieces I can try before I decide if I'll purchase it again. This is it here: https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/daler-rowney-langton-watercolour-board-30x22in-hot-pressed  They are out of stock of it at the moment. I used rough (textured) paper because that was all I could find here in Australia.

All of the files you need are attached below my message here.

I downloaded the reference photo from Pixabay. It was taken by Andreas Lischka. Here is the link: https://pixabay.com/photos/budgie-bird-parakeet-animals-2201256/

I've also put the link for the photo on the Supplies List.

I'll put this tutorial on the indexes so you can find it and paint it when you are ready.

Melike Akpınar

Hello, what color can I use instead of green gold? Or what colors can I mix to get a color close to this?

Louise De Masi

Hi Melike, Winsor & Newton's Green Gold is a unique color that can be challenging to replicate exactly. I don’t know what colours you have but I suggest: Start with a warm yellow and add a touch of blue (not too much) because green gold leans towards yellow. You could also try warming that colour up with an earthy tone like Raw Sienna or Burnt Sienna. Add the other colours sparingly though.

Patti of ArtSeeBella Designs

Hello! I'm Patti. I just finished this painting the other day. I haven't painted in nearly a year due to my poor health. I'm not on Facebook only on Instagram where I did share it. Your work is absolutely stunning Louise!❤️

Soncera

I finished the Budgerigar Tutorial, it took me a while but It came out great. Thank you so much for your guidance and step by step lessons.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure and thank you! I'm glad you are happy with your painting. 💖

Marion Preston

I have been waiting so,so patiently for this one, thanks Louise!

Diane King

I had a parakeet just like him. He was named "Cobie" short for "Jacobus". I will definitely paint this one. Thanks, Louise!

susan r harrison

thank you Louise, i love your paintings, especially your new Lion! Its so expressive!

Marika Roth

So lovely. What is your impression of the watercolor board?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Marika. I enjoyed painting on it but it takes me a while to get used to a new surface. I was happy with how the painting turned out. I'll paint on it a few more times before I decide whether I'll buy more of it.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Susan. I'll make a tutorial of the lion when I get all the other tutorials I did before it completed.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Diane. That's a cute name. I have a soft spot for them. My parents and I used to breed them and show them when I was a child.

Marika Roth

I am also curious about your backgrounds. Do you choose to do only a small area to suggest shadows?

Marika Roth

I just got an email today from Jerry's Artarama. They have Fabriano Artistico 300 lb reduced at a very good price. Do you shop from them in Australia?

Louise De Masi

I haven't been painting backgrounds for long. I've never been keen on full backgrounds where all of the white paper is covered so I experiment with them now to see what I like.

Louise De Masi

I've not tried Jerry's but I'll look them up. Thanks for letting me know.

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Sweet budgie! Thanks for continuing to turn out such fun projects for us to try, I especially like the grey shading above the black lines on the wings, I think that will be interesting to do. So many choices of subjects, I know that everyone appreciates that as much as I do!

Marika Roth

This makes me feel a bit better. Backgrounds are hard and I get very nervous when I do them for fear of messing up an otherwise acceptable painting.

Lynn Benn

Just watched the budgie tutorial and what a lovely way to spend my Sunday morning while enjoying my coffee. I'm really looking forward to starting the painting and I love all the detail so thank you Louise, you made my day.

Sharon E Toombs

Beautiful Louise, just beautiful. I watched a BBC nature show about these birds that was very interesting and I know I will enjoy painting this tutorial a great deal. Thank you so much for sharing all your talent and artistry.

Margie Frauenfelder

Such a well explained tutorial, can I have some suggestions on how to transfer the line image on to art paper?

Louise De Masi

Thank you Margie. Transferring the drawing onto watercolour paper is explained here in this post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/37395099 😀. I'm so excited to do this one, I have a ten year old blue and white budgie named Cirrus! No, they are not usually expected to live that long, but we haven't told him! He's just this year started imitating human speech, mumbling in various pitches, -- they can learn to speak. I'm hoping! He also imitates the neighborhood mockingbirds and crows.

Lydia Shemain

Beautiful little budgie. No one paints feathers like you Louise.

Louise De Masi

He must be very happy bird to have lived that long. 💙

Nettie Moss

Wonderful tutorial Louise! No sooner do I decide to do one - than another comes along: think I shall do this now, before the cat I had in mind;-) I have an interesting picture of 2 budgies in an old painting magazine I got off ebay - they are worked in pencil but I plan to do them in watercolour following your tutorial one is green and the other is blue. I may try the Antwerp blue for the latter. By the way - I received some some sample watercolour sheets from Jacksons - very reasonable price. One was Canson 640g/m and it feels great - well Canson I believe own Arches now (must check that is still the case) I have ordered a large sheet which they will cut in half for me - bit pricey if you buy in packs of 10 or 20 but single - large - sheet was just over £8. I think you'd like the 640 - it has a very stable feel to it. Even their 300g/m is supposed to take scrubbing well. Do you have a Jacksons in Australia?

Louise De Masi

Thank you Nettie. I wish we had a Jackson's over here. I think they are fabulous. I have bought from them a few times now. Their website is great and they ship promptly and package well. I can only get small items from them though because shipping is really expensive on larger items.

Nettie Moss

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Yes I know shipping is high - I asked Jacksons to quote a price to NSW and it ranged from £67+ to £98+ That was for an 840 Arches pad, so would be heavy. By the way - it's rather confusing as to who owns Arches now - I saw that Hamelin took them over but - ColArt who it's said are W&N's parent company are distributors May have changed as I write this!

Mel Johnson

I know right. My feather painting is the bane of my painting existence. I recently painted the heron and nearly threw it out due to the feathers looking odd. I painted them too dark and they just didn't look right!

Nancy Guenther

Louise, I have a question about your paddle brush. Is it specifically a watercolour brush? I’ve been looking and can only find some made for acrylics and oils like the 2” Liquitex paddle brush. Some users think they would work and others say the bristles would be too stiff others. What do you recommend?

Joyce C

Hello, I was wondering if you tried out Antwerp blue on a Budgie? I’m a novice so I’m unsure about an under wash with blues. I’d love to hear about anything you tried. The black feathers on this one were my biggest challenge. Oh, and of course, the very first two black lines on the top of the head. Thank you for any guidance.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Joyce. This is my first Budgie painting so I haven't tried painting a blue one. I used to breed Budgies and show them when I was a child (with my parents). I remember there is a darker blue budgie and a lighter blue budgie. I think for the darker blue budgie I'd go for Cobalt Blue maybe a little Antwerp mixed with it to see what it looked like and for the lighter blue maybe a mix of Cerulean Blue and Cobalt (or French Ultramarine). That's me thinking out loud.
