Hi everyone,

Happy New Year! Cheers to health, happiness and lots of painting in 2021! I wish you a very happy, healthy and productive year ahead. 🎉

I’ve been busy over the past few weeks and I’ve got lots of great tutorials lined up for you in the weeks ahead. Yesterday I painted a simple and fairly quick pansy for the beginners. I'll post that tutorial this month for all the new watercolour painters.

I’m kicking off 2021 with this Little Owl tutorial.

There’s lots of lively and spontaneous wet on wet work in this painting where I try to strike a balance between showing enough detail and not overworking it.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. You can click on them to download them to your device.

The reference photo was taken by Radovan Zierik and I downloaded it from Pixabay.

Here is the link: https://pixabay.com/photos/animal-background-beautiful-bird-5079161/

I’ve put the link to the photo on the Supplies List as well.

If you are new here, welcome! Below are the links to the tutorial indexes I have made. Please bookmark them and use them when you are looking for a particular tutorial:

Indexes:

The index on my website with clickable linked painting images: http://www.louisedemasi.com/new-index

The word index here on Patreon with clickable links: https://www.patreon.com/posts/34865676

I look forward to seeing your complete paintings. I hope you enjoy it.

PS: For you owl lovers who have been asking - the Barn Owl that's on my YouTube channel will be made into a full length tutorial. I've edited the footage and I will voice it over as soon as I can. The python tutorial is under construction. I'll post it when I'm finished.

Louise, where did this guy's feet go? Lol. He has them on the thumbnail :)

Louise De Masi

Thank you for pointing that out Maksym! I didn't realise that I had the wrong thumbnail. I painted a study of this owl and it had feet. That's the image I had as the thumbnail on the index. I didn't like the feet so when I painted the owl in this tutorial I left the feet off. I've changed the thumbnail on the index. Thank you for noticing and letting me know.

Maksym Kulikovskyi

Oh no problem, I actually liked the "feeted" version hehe so if in-ain’t that guy he’ll have them 😀

Yvonne Walton

Hi Louise I would love to do the little owl but I don’t have van Dyke Brown is there any other colour that I might be able to use? I have sepia raw umber burnt umber gold ochre brown ochre magnesium brown.

Louise De Masi

Hi Yvonne, use your Burnt Umber in place of the Van Dyke Brown,

Deanne Archer

Hi Louise, this is such a cute painting. Can I ask where you got your palette from you are using in the video. I have been looking for one like that but can't find it. Thanks :)

Louise De Masi

Hi Deanne, thank you! It's the John Pike Big Well palette. I can't remember where I purchased it - maybe Jackson's Art Supplies.

Lindsey Jewell

Happy new year to you as well! You, well, your patreon site membership, was my Christmas present from my husband and son. I absolutely love all of your paintings! You make it look so easy. Have you ever done a horse in watercolor before? I would love to paint one. I have a horse farm, and in my tackroom is where I hang all of my paintings that I have done with your tutorials. Much love, from North Carolina, US. Lindsey.

Julie Schwindt

Happy New Year Louise. You have such a generous heart! Thank-you for another exciting and beautiful tutorial! I hope you had sometime for yourself and family over Christmas! Hope your new year is filled with much joy! Julie ❤

Chez

Happy New Year to you and your family too! Many thanks for the your wonderful tutorials Louise.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Lindsey. What a lovely present for you! I have painted zebras in watercolour but not horses. I have a horse on my list of subjects to paint this year. A few patrons have asked me if I would. Love to you too.

maria haak

Gorgeous, can't wait for this one!! The final painting attachment is the one with the feet, did you mean to add the one without the feet?

Louise De Masi

Oops......Thank you for letting me know Maria. I'll fix it now.

Liliana Klass

Hi Louise. Happy New Year to you and your family. Thanks for posting the little owl tutorial. I’m looking forward to getting started. There’s a little issue. The link to your final painting doesn’t work. Maybe it can be fixed soon? Thank you Louise for all you give us. All the best

Louise De Masi

Hi Liliana, Thank you - you too! I'm on it! I accidentally uploaded my study of the owl that had feet on it. I've just scanned the proper painting. I'll attach it as soon as I get it ready.

Johanne

Merci Louise tu est tellement généreuse .

Louise De Masi

The finished painting is there now Liliana. Thank you!

maria haak

no problem, I think I prefer to paint the feet in, now I have both references :-) Hope you are having some relaxing time off.

Nettie Moss

Thank you Louise! I may catch up - one day: have a list of 'want to do next' tutorials! I am struggling with trying not to use too much pigment in the paint . . shall get there eventually! Very Happy New Year to you!

Zoe Lau

Hi Louise, I am new here. I love your artwork and want to learn more watercolor from you. The Antwerp blue is lovey color but I don't have it. Do you have any recommendation to substitute it?

Cynthia Keith

Happy new year Louise! Thank you for another brilliant tutorial.

Louise De Masi

Hi Zoe, you could try Prussian Blue. If you don't have that use one of the blues you do have. It doesn't have to be the same colour as mine just try to keep your colour values similar to mine. The value of the colour is how dark or how light you put it on the paper.

Zoe Lau

Thank you so much. Will share my "homework" once I finish😊

Lydia Frazier Bosley

I really enjoyed watching your little owl come to life, Louise! The detail and color in and around the eyes give it such an alert gaze, I look forward to trying this one, thanks!

Linda

Hello everyone, Happy New Year! Louise I have a question. I own a 60 colour set of Holbein, an eighteen colour set from Schmincke, 12 colour set of Winsor Newton plus other assorted colours and still I do not have matches to the colours you use. Maybe the odd one here or there so I'm wondering if it is possible for you to include the pigment codes for the colours you use, that way I may be able to match or find a closer colour. It would certainly be appreciated!

Louise De Masi

Hi Linda, Happy new year to you too! I'll remember to do that on the supplies lists moving forward.

Trish Hawrys

I'm in love with this owl <3s Do you happen to know what type of owl this is?

Trish Hawrys

great idea, Linda. I use mainly Danial Smith so knowing the pigment color would be helpful

Janicce Chin

Happy New Year Louise! Thank you for this cute little owl. Can you suggest a substitute for Vandyke brown?

Louise De Masi

Happy New Year Janice. Thank you! Try Burnt Umber or Brown Ochre or something like that. It doesn't have to be the same as mine.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Linda. That's very useful. I've bookmarked it.

Caroline

Thank you Louise, happy new year to you. I can't wait to paint this little guy 😊

Trish Hawrys

lol, Okay ! I thought you were just saying he was little. I was just researching him to see what his habit was like. I love learning about the birds I paint.

sue magee

I just finished it! I’m a new patron and am so happy with your art, you as a teacher and your tutorials, thank you! How do I send a photo of my painting?

Louise De Masi

Hi Sue, that's great. I'm glad. Thank you very much! Unfortunately there's nowhere here on Patreon to share photos so that's one of the reasons I made the private facebook group.

sue magee

O yes, I saw that yesterday. Ok, will do,thanks.

Pam Causey

Louise is there any other blue that would work for this really excited about trying it but having a hard to finding that blue? Thanks it sure is pretty

Louise De Masi

Hi Pam, Thank you! It doesn't need to be Antwerp Blue. You could use Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine or really any blue that you like.

Candace

I usually match by pigment number. You have to remember that different brands can have quite different results. It does help tho.. You can go on the W & N website and access all of their colors and pigment info. That is how I manage. Hope this helps :)

Renee Howard Cassese

Hi all and Happy New Year! I just sketched this into my sketchbook to do a practice painting before doing him larger. As for color matching--in all of my painting when I follow an artist tutorial I try to get close to the colors used from the paints I have and don't fret too much if they aren't exact as long as the values end up the same. That said, I have quite a few watercolor sets so usually I can find something that works. I have never gotten into pigment numbers--guess I'm just not a numbers gal LOL. Making swatch cards for all my WCs helps to match up what I need.

Lise Bowles

Hi Louise! I haven’t started this yet but I love your painting! I’m having a terrible time printing the finished photo on the list!

Louise De Masi

Hi Lise. Can you save it to your device (laptop, computer, ipad etc) rather than print it?

Lise Bowles

Hello again Louise, yes that worked, thank you. Now, I’m sorry to be a pest, but now I cannot seem to get the sound to come on for this tutorial, darn. I want to tell you that I reset my iPad, I tried the sound on your other tutorial and it works just fine, I am at my whits end, I cannot figure out the problem. I have checked to make sure that the sound speaker does not have a line through it, etc. my volume is all the way up, any suggestions? I love the little owl, as I love all of your tutorials, and your studio! My goal in life is to someday have a studio just like yours, so perfect! No distractions. I have come to the conclusion that you must never sleep because of all the tutorials you’ve done! Thank you again for all of your help, I just love your work!

Louise De Masi

Hi Lise, I have no idea I'm sorry. The sound is working ok. Try logging out and then back in again. Try a different device- your computer if you have one and also if you are using the Patreon app try logging into Patreon through your web browser. If you are using the app make sure the app is updated to the latest version. 🤷🏼‍♀️💜

Lise Bowles

Louise, I got the sound issue resolved by not going through the app and just pulling up Patreon though Safari, thank you!

Louise De Masi

That's good Lise. I'm glad it's working for you now.

Judy Breedlove

Thank you, Louise, I enjoyed painting this sweet little owl. It was a bit of a challenge for me not to try to paint every feather.

Carole

Working on it. . .
