Hi everyone, I know Christmas may be different and possibly difficult for many of you this year. Please know that I am thinking of you and I send you my best wishes. I hope you have a very happy Christmas and wonderful New Year. Thank you for all your support this year. ❤️

I'll be heading to my mum's home for Christmas day. She lives about 9 hours south of me. I haven't seen her for a few years so it will be so good to see her again. One of my sons and his girlfiend are coming with us and one of my brothers will be there too. I'm grateful that we can travel here in Australia without too many restrictions. I'd love to know what plans you have for Christmas this year. Let me know in the comments when you have time.

I have just uploaded the video above to my YouTube channel. I haven't made a full length tutorial because I didn't film all of the painting. I only intended to put it on my YouTube channel. I thought I'd post it here though for those who wanted to try to paint it. I've attached the line drawing and my finished painting below in case you want to have a play.

Here is the link to the reference photo: https://unsplash.com/photos/D1wiHCovGJ0

It was taken by Erda Estremera and it's on the Unsplash website.

I haven't made a supplies list but I mention all the colours I used in the video and the paints and paper are listed below.

Arches cold pressed A3 size (11.7 by 16.5")

Winsor and Newton paints: French Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna, Sepia, Scarlet Lake and Winsor Violet

Stay safe!

All the best to you and your family Louise. In the words of our beloved Chief Medical Officer here in British Columbia..."Be Kind, Be Calm, Be Safe".

Cynthia Love

Merry Christmas Louise snd safe travels Hug your mama for me 😘 here in New Jersey we are in lockdown still and my mama is in Texas 😞

Laurel

Merry Christmas Louise! Wishing you and yours the very best of the season and a happy, healthy reunion with your mom and brother. We’re having a quiet Christmas in Ottawa, ON, Canada (my husband and I) even though our children are just 1hr away. Our province is in various stages of lockdown and the authorities are discouraging travel. That’s ok, next year will be better for all 💕

Denyse Sauriol

Hi Louise, you will never know how much this tutorial means to me and so many others that not only lost a precious furry friend but their loving human parent as well. I can only say thank you to a divine perception on your part to give us such a precious gift. More thanks to you that you could ever count. ❤️

Pascale

Joyeux Noel et Belle Année :) <3 …. Merci pour ce cours … c'est magnifique :)

Melissa

I love the dachshund Have a blessed holiday season I am sure your mom will be thrilled

Carolyn Palmer

I too love the dachshund and can’t wait to get started painting him. He looks just like my sweet dachshund Murphy. The word dachshund can be a tongue twister! Here in the United States many people call them wiener dogs or doxies. Merry Christmas Louise, to you and your family. Please know that your lessons are helping me stay sane during this crazy time. I’m looking forward to much more painting in the new year. Blessings.

Lori

Louise, I’m sending you many wishes for Happy Holidays! Thank you for all you’ve done this year. Your paintings are such a joy to paint and you are a wonderful teacher.

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Dear Louise, I adore the dachshund, very cute! How lovely that you will be able to see your mum and other family members over Christmas, I hope you have a relaxing and happy holiday. My husband and I will stay right at home Logsden, Oregon as we have done all year, and my brother is flying up from L.A. to join us for a few days over Christmas. I'm telling him to hold his breath as he goes through the airports! All the best to you, Dom, your mum and family! 💜💛💚

SUE STRANGE

Dear Louise, sending you and your family Seasons Greetings . A huge thank you for sharing your knowledge of the beautiful medium, water colour painting with all of us. Hope you get some R&R over the Christmas holidays. Safe travels.

Kathy Wilden

Have a wonderful Christmas with your mum and family. I will be spending Christmas with my son, daughter and their kids.

Eleanor

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and looking forward to the New Year!

Irene Bateman

Safe travels Louise. Spending the holidays with my children at the my daughters place at Teven. The grandchildren 7 and 5 have cleaned a spot out in the creek for nannie to sit and stay cool. Bless them. Thanks for your tutorials this past year Louise. You have been inspirational. Wishing you and your family all the best of the seasons greetings

Nettie Moss

Dear Louise - thank you for this adorable painting! I hope you enjoy a wonderful time with your Mom - you will have lots to talk about as Grandma to Great Grandma! Let's hope next year will be freer for us all and we can see more of our loved ones. I am staying at home and my son is coming with his girlfriend - and he is cooking lunch - how lucky is that! He is a brilliant cook, started at age 3 when they made herby scones at Nursery school!! It's relaxing as an escape from his computer work which is hectic. Do try to get some well earned rest, don't worry about us for awhile, don't feel pressured and you will come back to us after a month off all fresh as a daisy! Do try to take that time to recharge the batteries. Happy Christmas - we shall raise a glass to you: my son watched one of your videos with me and was very impressed! Nettie xx

Rebecca

Have a very Merry Christmas too and safe travels!🎄 I’ll be working. When you work at a senior memory care unit it’s hard to take off. But that’s ok.....I love my job and I love my residence!

Michelle Wainer

You are just the best Louise! Your outtakes make me laugh. “Dachshund” is a tricky one to say without sounding like you are just trying a bad German accent. I have been teased for my attempts until I got it right. Anyway, your painting is just amazing and you are an amazing artist and teacher. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family. Being cautious in Maine by not seeing my mom until things are a bit more controlled. Miss seeing her and hugging her. Take care, be safe, have fun, and thank you for all you do! ❤️

Nettie Moss

I just watched the video Louise - and am still giggling from the end bits which I love! Isn't it amazing how, as soon as you paint the eyes, the whole face comes alive and suddenly it's a real dog! I absolutely love you figure work - and the rendition of denim is sublime. I do hope we get to see those in more detail next year!

Ali B

Ah Louise, I love your little dachshund and thanks for the outtakes at the end, I really needed that giggle! Thank you for all the amazing tutorials and fun this year. Wishing you and the family a safe and happy Christmas and new year and good travels. Your mum must live within cooee of me, given the travel

Ali B

...time. If you need a cuppa and passing through the Yass/Canberra area, please shout out via FB messenger!

Thanks Betty. Merry Christmas to you and your family too.

Louise De Masi

Absolutely - wise words! Thank you Carolyn. You too!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Cynthia. Merry Christmas and I'm sorry you can't be with yours. I will - hugs to you!

Louise De Masi

Yes definitely. Brighter days ahead. Thank you Laurel and Merry Christmas to you too.

I'm so sorry for your losses Denyse. Sending you huge hugs! ❤️

Joyeux Noël et bonne année Pascale. Restez en sécurité.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Melissa. Have a lovely Christmas yourself. 💕

Louise De Masi

Thank you Carolyn! We call them sausage dogs here....lol. My daughter in law is German I should have asked her how to pronounce it. You have a lovely Christmas too. 💕

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much Lori. You have a lovely Christmas too. 💕

Louise De Masi

Thank you Lydia. I hope you enjoy his visit. Have a very happy Christmas and stay well.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Sue. Have a wonderful Christmas yourself.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Irene. How sweet of them. That's about 2 and half hours drive north of us here. I hope it's not too wet for you. We've had a lot of rain and there's more to come. Have fun - Merry Christmas.

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much Nettie. I like the sound of that - having a son to cook for you! I hope you have a beautiful Christmas and happy New year! I'll raise a glass to you too. 💕

Louise De Masi

Thank you Rebecca and thank you for the important and selfless work that you do. I hope you have a good day at work.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Michelle! My daughter in law was born in Germany - I should have asked her how to pronounce it 🤣. I'm sorry you can't be with your mom. I hope you can get in touch with her over Facetime or something. Have a very happy Christmas. 💕

Louise De Masi

Thanks again Nettie. Yes I agree, all animals and birds come to life when you put the eyes in. I plan to make tutorials of the monotone profile and the little boy in the denim jacket.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Ali! We'll be flying to Sydney and then travelling to Wollongong by car. Masks will be on in Sydney! You have a lovely Christmas too.

Jill Cook

What a lovely message 💕. A very Merry Christmas to you and your family too Louise! We are increasingly restricted here in the UK. Should be in Scotland but spending time just the four of us in our wee cottage this year in the wilds of Wiltshire. All the best for 2021 and thanks for your amazing tutorials and hard work this year. Time to unwind!! 🍾🥂🥰

Ali B

Ahah! Enjoy the ‘gong, hope the weather is good to you. And yes, I’d say masks on the plane too, not worth the risk right now. Take care. ❤️🎄🎅🏼

Marianne Brennan

Happy Christmas Louise and thank you for your brilliant tutorials, I’ll be spending Christmas here in the Southeast of Ireland in Small seaside village called Rosslare, usually at this time we are in Perth with our daughter and her family, so instead of tee shirts and shorts it will be silly jumpers hats and gloves for us

5 Flavors

Thank you for all you've done for us this year. Hopefully you will get a little time to do absolutely NOTHING. I definitely appreciated the time investing in getting better and not spent looking at the news. For the last 20 years we host Christmas (and all holidays) here for my husband's son, 2 brothers and widowed dad (almost 101). Envision "7 brides for 7 brothers". It's quite bad here covid-wise and so we will be not doing that but hopefully we;ll mask up and do a food drop off to my father-in-law Christmas eve. He always says "it could be worse", I never really understood that. Hopefully a lesson I will remember. We pray for a better 2021.

Mary Kay Flood

Thank you for your wonderful tutorials Louise, and the warm Holiday greeting. We are in Southern California where Covid has rebounded with a terrible vengeance. We’re OK so far and hoping you & your family have a happy & healthy Christmas!

Eve Eichner

Merry Christmas 🎄and Happy New Year 🎉💕wishing you and Dom the very BEST! THANK YOU for all your wonderful tutorials!

Pam Causey

Merry Christmas to you and your family stay safe. I am in Florida and covid is terrible here too! So glad vaccines are around the corner and so is 2021. looking forward to progressing with my painting with your help! Merry Christmas🥰

Denyse Sauriol

Louise, the Merriest of Christmas to you and your entire family and may the New Year bring all your wishes come to fruition. You have made this year wonderfully creative for me and i am looking forward to the next one with great hopes and excitement. You are the "bestest". Stay safe and healthy, we all love and need you.

Shelly Solle

Merry Christmas Louise. I can’t wait to paint this for my friend. She loves doxies.

Chantelle Venter

Thank you for the cute doggie. I have a Jack Russell so I would like to try something similar. We are actually on a spontaneous road trip with my cousin which happened in less than 24 hours to see my family which live 1550km away. We are driving there and they have no idea we came with her. We are sleeping over at a little hotel half way through and will continue the journey tomorrow. The 21st is also my daughter's 10th birthday which she will now spend with family that she hasn't seen in over a year and a half. I had so many paintings planned for this time but I guess family comes first. May you have a blessed Christmas with your loved ones and thank you for all the amazing tutorials. Much love from South Africa ❤️

Sharon E Toombs

Love him Louise. Thank you. Have a wonderful Christmas with your family!

Susanne Norling

What a lovely dog and I look forward to paint this tutorial. Here in Sweden we call them tax. Have a very happy christmas with your loved ones. ❤️

Irene Konowal

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Florida. Thank you for all the hard work you do for all of us to enjoy. Now it’s your time to celebrate and enjoy your family. We will be going camping in our RV for a few days and celebrate Christmas. 🎄

Silvia Wray

Happy festivities from the UK! Thank you for the magic you create Louise and the love of art that you share so generously. Wishing you and yours all blessings and good things. Here's to 2021:-)

Claude Wybou

Whishing you only the best for 2021🥂

Merry Christmas and a great New Year from Adelaide! when we were children we used to pronounce this 'dash hound' O)..the last thing they do is dash about. These are the exact colours for a chihuahua I have been promising someone to do, after practicing this one.

Michael Hinz

Merry Christmas from Wisconsin, USA!!

Chelsey

How many brushes are you working with at one time?

Gale McKiddy

Louise, I love this! I wondered if you could show us how you would sketch the top of the head and right ear without the cap. I would like to paint this for someone who doesn't celebrate Christmas, so the hat (though darling) would need to be left off. This would be greatly appreciated! Merry Christmas from St. Louis, USA, and thanks for your wonderful tutorials and great sense of humor. Stay well!

Louise De Masi

Thanks Gale. I'll see what I can do when I get home. You have a lovely Christmas too!

Louise De Masi

Sometimes I might use two at a time. One to put the paint on and one to soften edges etc.

Margaret B Smith

Here in Alaska we are at the end of the time zones. So its a very late but sincere wish that you have a Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year, may your visit with family and friends be a memorable one - that will warm the heart with happy memories.

Margaret B Smith

Thank you for your tutorials, I can't wait for the next post and labor over every detail, However I am trying to paint in a more relaxed manner. fortunately some of your techniques (Wet in Wet) help to let the process evolve and that is good. Don't know how to attach anything to show you - but in time - who knows.

Desert Morning

I love this tutorial. The way the fur is developed is just fascinating. I'm so intrigued by the way you deal with very dark fur and feathers. And of course, I fell in love with the dog.

Pam Williams

Happy new year Louise from England xx

Katherine Antonini

Thank you Louise for this beautiful tutorial! I am attempting to paint this and putting in my stepdaughter’s French bulldog instead of the dachshund for a Christmas gift this year. Unfortunately, what looks so simple when you paint it, is crazy difficult for me. 😞 I am trying to get the fabric done before I paint the dog so I don’t ruin it at the end. I just can’t get mine to look soft and blended like you do. Either my paper is too wet, and the paint just spreads everywhere. Or the paper dries too fast and I get hard edges everywhere. I just can’t get the happy medium. I also am having so much difficulty picturing where the shadows belong. After the initial wash, do I then add the darker shade (with hard edges) on the grey parts, or under the grey parts but actually on the white parts? I don’t know why this confuses me so much but I am struggling so much with it that I am thinking of giving up on watercolor and trying acrylic or oils. Maybe I’m just not meant to conquer watercolor. Any suggestions Louise? Thanks so much!

Louise De Masi

Hi Katherine, I've painted a French Bulldog in a red santa jacket and I'll be posting a full length tutorial of it in a few days. It will be a full length tutorial and you might find it easier than this one. It will have progress photos to help you where this one doesn't. See my Instagram profile if you want to have a look at it - or my Facebook page. With this one- get the loose grey parts on and then redraw the hard edge crease lines. The darker hard edge areas go between the pencil lines and painting them on brings out the 5 softer rolls of fabric.

Katherine Antonini

Thank you Louise! I will definitely be looking out for your French bulldog tutorial. It will probably be a lot easier following it step by step. But I will still keep practicing with this one to try to get my loose painting to look the way it’s supposed to.

MARIANNE DANHOF

Hi Louise, I just finished doing this Dachshund. I found it a bit fast here and there and hardly any progress photos to check upon. Is there a chance that you already give us a Christmas card to work on in November this year? THANKS EVER SO MUCH! Bye from Germany, with lots of Dachshunds... 😊

Louise De Masi

Hi Marianne, This is a tutorial I made for my YouTube channel which is why it was fast. I didn't film it all either. I put it here on Patreon with the line drawing etc for those who wanted to try painting it themselves. I will be attempting to paint a Christmas painting in November 🤞🏻. If it works out I'll post it here on Patreon early December. Thanks.

Yvonne N Berlingeri

Took me two years to attempt this but I did it, replacing the Dachshund with my Schnauzer Lola. Thank you for this tutorial

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Yvonne. Thank you. I hope it worked out well.

Julie Borkowski

I am going to try it, but I want to make him a brown/red dachshund. I am intimidated but I am willing to try.
