Hi everyone,

Here is  Part 1 of  'The Jacket' tutorial.

Most of the work on this painting is on the denim jacket. Take your time with it. Before I started I did a graphite study and I also did a colour study which really helped me when I painted the final painting. I worked on this for two or three days so my advice is not to try and paint it in one session. I've labelled it for advanced painters but as always I take you step by step through the entire painting so if you're not an advanced painter, watch it all the way through and if you are feeling confident, give it a go. There are lots of progress photos to help you and I have labelled them with a time stamp of where they correspond with the video.

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Mr.E

Hi Louse I’m about to paint the jacket for my friends 3 boys and they all have fair ginger hair could you recommend what paints I could use to get to that colour please. Thank you very much

Louise De Masi

Hi Mr.E - I'm thinking: Burnt Sienna – for those warmer, reddish undertones. Raw Sienna – to add depth and a hint of golden warmth.

Mr.E

Thank you for your advice Louise

Nettie Moss

Oh! thank you SO much for this Louise - I have been looking forward to it! I shall, as always, watch the video several times before attempting - I need to think about it all before starting a new work. I am also looking forward to the goat! I'm still working on the white cat, final details and have something else of my own I want to try; so plenty to keep me busy! Thanks very much for all your hard work for us - you are a gem and are helping me - and I'm sure many others - to get through these very difficult times. Keep well.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Nettie. I'm glad. All of you are helping me in the same way. 💕

Pascale

Beautiful Louise :) " J'adore "... I just hope you don't forget us ... you know the ones who like intermediate or advanced flowers :) Thanks in advance :) <3

Louise De Masi

Thanks Pascale. I've been working on a daffodil for the past two days. 😁

Renee Howard Cassese

Definitely will try this! I love pictures of children. This will be a real challenge for me but we're in lockdown as the virus grows and mutates, so lots of time to paint.

Pascale

Ohhhhh thank you thank you :) <3

Debbie Smith

Oooh, I am excited about that! I have tried doing a daffodil twice in just the past few weeks, and I just can't get the center part right!

Cassandra Hill

I think you’ve found your calling! Hehe It looks amazing! Also, my eradicator brush came the other day and it’s a miracle tool!

Debra Hockenberry

I love this one Louise! I just finished the little owl and plan on starting this one after I finish the lion. Any plans to do a little girl?

Louise De Masi

Thnk you Cassandra. Great! They are very useful. I don't know what I did without mine.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Debra. I'll be keeping my eye out for a good reference photo.

Patricia Espinoza

Thanks Louise for the tutorial....looks challenging! What color could substitute the antwerp blue??

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Patricia. I think Daniel Smith's Prussian Blue is the same pigment number as W & N's Antwerp Blue. So they are probably similar.

Desert Morning

Hi Louise. This is not a response to this tutorial but I don't know where else to put the comment. I can't find your index to your various tutorials any longer. I really miss that straightforward list of what is where on your website. It's quite hard to find the tutorial I'm working on now because it's an old one, I think. I hope I'm just looking in the wrong places. I'm looking for the hyacinth Macaw. Could you point me to directions for navigating your various sites? Thanks.

Rita Navroth

Hi Louise, awesome tutorial. This one is special. Can you tell me what color can be substituted for Antwerp Blue PB27? I thought I had nearly most colors but here is one I don't have in any brand. Appreciate your suggestion.

Louise De Masi

Hi Rita, Thank you! Daniel Smith's Prussian Blue is the same pigment number as W & N's Antwerp Blue. So it would be pretty close I'd say.

Vicki Falsgraf

I'm so excited to start this. A close friend just found out she is having her second son!!! I think it would be a great gift. I love your tutorials...I am learning A LOT! Thank you for teaching!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Vicki. I'm glad 💜.I hope you enjoy it.

Louise De Masi

It's a thin flat brush with short bristles that is used for removing paint after it has dried. I buy them from Rosemary and Co in the UK. That's the name of them 'eradicator brush'. They come in three sizes I think small, medium, large. I have a small and a medium.

Marian Bonney

Thank you for such a quick reply!

hi Louise, finally back from tripping around Australia. I am really getting back into painting and I have just finished the Jacket tutorial. very challenging but I really enjoyed it. I am thinking of doing another one for my daughter who has a three yr old, but with really white blonde hair. Have you any suggestions for colours that would best create this look.

Louise De Masi

Hi Maria, I hope you had a fabulous time travelling around Australia. I think I'd go for a colour like Raw Sienna or Naples Yellow. Paint it on quite pale. Look for darker brown areas as well.

maria blackburn

Thanks so much Louise. I will definitely give this a try and yes we had a fabulous time. Only a couple of close calls to the divorce court which is pretty good considering we spent eight months travelling in the close quarters of our motorhome.
