Hi everyone,
Here is Part 1 of the Magnolias tutorial.
Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/50235891
For this painting I used a limited palette of only two complementary colours - Winsor Green blue shade and Permanent Rose. I was inspired after I had been reading Stephen Quiller's book 'Color Choices - Making Sense out of Color Theory'.
At the start of the video I demonstrate the range of semineutral colours that I mixed using the two pigments above. Semineutral colours are the colours that are made when you mix two colours together unequally (so as you are mixing, you mix more of one colour than the other). According to Stephen Quiller, semineutral colours are very effective in painting. He writes that full intensity colours should be used in small areas while the semineutral colours should be used in the larger passive areas. If equal amounts of each complement are used in a painting it tends to confuse the eye because both of the colours compete for the eye's attention (p45).
I had that information in my mind as I painted this painting particularly when I was painting the background. I loved the green but I knew I had to tone it down and use more of the neutral and semineutral colours there.
I have a video here on Patreon where I flick through this book if you haven't seen it: https://www.patreon.com/posts/48259924 . I know some of you have already bought it.
This painting requires patience. I layered the paint quite a few times so I wouldn't try and do it in one sitting. Take your time and enjoy the process.
All of the files you need are attached below my message here. There are lots of progress photos for you. I hope you enjoy it.

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.
If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.
If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.
If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi
Thank you!
