Hi everyone,

Here is Part 1 of the Sheltie tutorial.

Patience and perseverance is needed for this painting. There's long fur to deal with and it's black which is a combination that can be quite difficult to render. I painted it 2 or 3 times before I was confident enough to film myself. Take your time and be prepared to paint it more than once.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/51986272

The reference photo was taken by Jackie Lou and I downloaded it from Pixabay. Here is the link if you'd like to download it yourself: https://pixabay.com/photos/sheltie-dog-pet-animal-6088233/  I've also put the link on the Supplies List.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below.

Have fun.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

I love the black you created combining the perylene violet and Windsor blue. However, when I added water for the wet wash, I get either a blue or violet...can't find the right ratio to balance it out!

Louise De Masi

Hi Claudia are you using Winsor Green (blue shade) I didn't use Winsor Blue? You will get areas where one colour dominates on the wet paper- that happened to me too but I went with it.

Nettie Moss

Thank you Louise - look forward to giving it a go in a week or so!

I just watched part 1 - I see I am going to have one of your problems - paper drying too quickly - it has turned quite hot here! Lovely tutorial.

Nicole Kuyten

What is the thickness of the gator board you use?

Louise De Masi

I use 18mm gatorboard. That's about 3/4 of inch thick. I also have a 10mm board but I wouldn't buy anything thinner than that because it will bow when the paper dries.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Nettie. I'm glad it's warming up for you over there.

Vee

What a super tutorial and stunning painting! I love how you painted the fur of this most beautiful dog. Thank you once again for a top-class demo!

Olivia

I painted this sheltie to prepare for painting long black fur. I'm painting a long-haired black kitten for a friend. For my first try it came out really well, but I've decided that I really don't like painting on hot press paper. I find it's really hard to avoid hard water lines, the paint lifts too easily from the paper, and it's harder for me not to overwork it. I found I also prefer the overall look of cold press, I think hot press tends to look a little more 2D. Thanks for the instruction Louise!

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Olivia. Thank you! I used hot pressed paper a lot when I was making prints but I'm now using cold pressed paper a lot more and I agree with you. I prefer to use it over hot pressed.

Marcela Fernandez del Rio

Thank you Olivia, I have had the question about hot pressed paper for a while now but have not tried it myself.

Marika Roth

I fought with hot press paper the first time I tried it but now I love it for certain subjects, especially realistic wildlife.

I just returned to finish the sheltie. Just wondering if I can substitute brown or yellow ochre for the gold ochre. Thank you and hoping that you have recovered from Covid and are feeling well again. Omicron is running rampant all over the US. Thank you. Marika

OMG I just saw this!!! It's advanced that's why I haven't done it yet, I'm on intermedia tutorials still. Now I have the idea clear in my mind about the dog I'm trying to paint ❤️ Thank you so much 🙏🏻🐞
