Hi everyone,

A few patrons have requested I paint a Galah so here it is.

This is Part 1.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/54910910

With this painting I tried to keep the focus near the head by fading the colour away lower down. I painted it over two days so take your time with it. The wing feathers require some patience. I had to get up and take a break from the painting a few times when I was painting the wings.

I hope you enjoy it.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Hi Louse, Thankyou for this tutorial. I'm finally making progress with my negative painting of feathers and found your information about a focal point fun to play with. Liz O

Louise I’ve just finished this wonderful tutorial but I have to do a double check with the the Quiacridone red as mine was ve

Yvonne Walton

vey pink but you’re was red is that common or just because you’re might have been older. Sorry it’s in two posts

Louise De Masi

I saw your Galah Yvonne. It's really beautiful! If you are using the same brand, I'm not sure why it would be different to the colour I used. It didn't detract from your painting at all though. I love it!

Karen W

Thank you, I had no idea about this. Appreciate it.

Hi Louise, I've just finished this beautiful Galah🤩.....really enjoyed this lesson 👍....for me it was an exercise in trying to "paint pale"....modern watercolours are full of vibrant pigments and I love to use them !.....As I have never been a fan of old fashioned pale & faded watercolour paintings .....means that sometimes I paint in the darks in too much & too soon and then everything else needs to be toned up accordingly.....I really liked the way you had created a both vibrant and ethereal painting, using both vivid and pale colours along side each other to great effect!😍

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much Cheryle. The only macaw tutorial I have is the blue macaw. I didn't make a tutorial of the Macaw I have on YouTube because I didn't film it all.

Hotflash Vickie

I don't know that I will ever be able to do those wings, my painting skills being what they are right now, but assuming I can work my way up to the required watercolor skill level, I'm also worried my math skills might not be up to the task of counting all those feathers! Yes, I can see why you'd need a little break or two!!

Lauran Trevena

Thank you so much 😁 I’m going to start this one today!

christine walnum

I really enjoy the way you show your process! I have noticed that on patron there is not closed captions. I am significantly hearing impaired. Is it possible to get CC settings on your patron video's? You do inspire me with your artistry.

Hilda

It’s so lovely and I love the color combinations. Thank you 😊 I will paint 🎨

Cynthia Love

My goodness!! What a gorgeous bird!! I can’t wait to try this 😊 thank you so much for sharing your talent 😘

Lydia Frazier Bosley

Mmmm, delicious colors - I look forward with pleasure to trying your Galah! 💗💜

Marika Roth

Hello Louise, This Galah is lovely. Is this a more advanced version of one you did previously? How do they differ? Also, I just checked the other tutorial on SS, and see that you used hot press paper on that one. Did you find one better than the other for this bird?

Louise De Masi

Hi Marika, I painted the Galah on Skillshare a few years ago when I used to sell prints of my work and when I was working in licensing. I painted on hot pressed paper a lot back then because I found it better to reproduce copies. Now my prefered choice of paper is cold pressed. I find it more forgiving and less slippery to paint on than hot pressed. Paint on whatever paper you enjoy painting on. This Galah is not necessarily more advanced but in this one I fade the intensity of the colour away from the focal point which is a useful compositional technique you can use in all your paintings.

Marika Roth

Thanks. I look forward to trying this one.

Kay Brady

I don’t see the enlarged bottom that includes the talons, branch or tail feathers? Is there another download?

Louise De Masi

Hi Kay, no, the Galah is cropped. There are no tail feathers, branches or feet.

Liz C

Hello Louise, thank you for the galah tutorial. Where can student projects be seen and posted?

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Liz. I have a private Facebook group you can join where students have made albums of all of the paintings they have produced from each tutorial: facebook.com/groups/118323255562001 Unfortunately there is no community page here on Patreon where we can do that.

Louise Edsall

Thank you! All set but I can’t seem to get the supply list to load. Likely my error! So excited to try this as when I lived in Woomera SA these birds were regulars to my garden! Miss them here in Virginia USA

Louise De Masi

Hi Louise, I'm sure you do miss them. It's downloading ok here. Log in to Patreon through your internet browser. If you are using the Patreon app that might be why you are having difficulty. Use Safari, Firefox, Google Chrome (whatever you use to browse the internet). See if that fixes it for you.

Louise Edsall

That was the trick to open on my computer instead of the app. Appreciate it! Keep well!

Anita C. Paul

I love this. Also, your discussion on how you used Photoshop was also very helpful. I don't have photoshop, but I have something similar. I've been trying to learn how to use the program to make my watercolor painting better.

Hilda

"Louise I can’t seem to find a Patreon Facebook group? Is there one, where we can share our work?

Louise De Masi

Hi Hilda. Yes it's here: facebook.com/groups/118323255562001

Hilda

Thank you, just joined 😁

Susanne

Hi Louise, greetings from Germany! I‘m a member on patreon since July. Your tutorials are so lovely and helpful! Just can‘t stop painting. 😊

Louise De Masi

Hi Susanne, Thank you! I'm glad you can't stop painting- that's what I like to hear! 💕

Kelly Halligan

Hi, I just joined-using safari and when I try and view and try to print the drawing its several pages. Any suggestions? When I hit download nothing happens. Thanks, just joined today

Louise De Masi

Hi Kelly, welcome again. I've just checked it and it's downloading ok for me. I clicked on it and it went straight into my download folder. I've included a line drawing on one page and I've enlarged the line drawing onto two pages for those who have difficulty enlarging on their printers at home. That's why there are three line drawings. If you are logged into Patreon through your internet browser there shouldn't be a problem. Sometimes the Patreon app will play up. Try a different browser perhaps (Google Chrome is good) or maybe a different device. If you are using an iPad use a computer instead if you have one.

Janet

Had such a great time doing this, and it's my favorite of all the tutorials I've done. The combination of cobalt turquoise and quin. red is gorgeous and I loved painting all those feathers. It takes time but the look you get is worth it. Thanks, Louise. I highly recommend this one to fellow Patrons.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Janet. I'm glad you enjoyed it and had success.
