Hi everyone,

I hope you've had a great weekend. I'm pleased to report that we have had some rain over the weekend. Insert happy dance here.

Here is Part 1 of the Koala watercolour tutorial. I have divided this tutorial into two videos.

This tutorial is targeted at intermediate to advanced painters but beginners will also find it useful because I walk you step by step through the whole painting.

There is lots of wet on wet work and blending colours on the paper.

At the beginning of the tutorial I talk briefly about what went through my head before I started painting. So if you want to get straight into the painting skip ahead to the 4.30 mark.

I mix some grey paint for the Koala but if you'd prefer to use a pre-mixed grey, Jane's Grey by Daniel Smith is a similar mix of the two pigments I used (Burnt Sienna and French Ultramarine).

Some of you have mentioned that your paint separates when you mix it. Don't worry.....mine does too. I talk a bit about this in the tutorial. I don't get too concerned when my mixed paint does this, in fact, I embrace it. It is another one of the reasons I love using watercolour.

All of the files you need are attached below. I've included a larger drawing where I have split it into two for those who have difficulties enlarging their drawings.

Have fun. I look forward to seeing your Koala paintings.

I never thought I would have the courage to paint a Koala in Watercolours (as I am new to watercolours) I did it and I am so grateful to you Louise for your tutorials. Your realtime tutorials make it so easy to follow as they are perfectly timed and you explain everything so beautifully - thank you so much. I love my Koala and feel my skills growing each time I do one of your fantastic tutorials.

Thank you so much for your kind words Belinda! I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed painting the Koala and that my tutorials have helped you gain confidence with watercolours......it makes my day. 🥰

This was so fun to paint. I had my coloring a little off and the koala and tree were almost the same color. Went back into to the tree and added more brow. I love it so much

This is lovely! We had terrible fires this summer here in California, and I do feel like you really captured the sadness of the wildlife.

For some reason I have trouble with the tutorials such as the Koala, Rhino and Lion. They all require the soft edges and translucency in some areas. I wish I could master this style and will try again. Are there any specific exercises, practice tutorials, to improve these skills? Thank you.

Louise De Masi

No there are no specific practice tutorials I have made. Keep practicing and be prepared to paint the same subject a few times. I often paint the same painting a few times before I'm happy with it. You could try wetting the paper and then waiting until it is less wet before you paint on. See if that helps. Also try varying the thickness of your paint. If it's too thin or if your brush is too wet the paint will spread out of control so try a mixture of paint that has more pigment in it and a little less water.

Thank you. I also recently figured out that I don't need to paint the entire image. Sometimes just following the tutorials and doing a section helps me. At least i won't have ruined an entire sheet of paper.

Louise De Masi

That's a really good idea. I practice on the back of paintings that haven't worked out as well. I hate wasting it too.
