Hi everyone,

Here is the Barn Owl tutorial.

With this painting I used a limited palette of only four colours.

The files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. The reference photo was taken by Bruno van der Kraan and I downloaded it from Unsplash website. Here is the link if you'd like to download it yourself:  https://unsplash.com/photos/TkQjNx6qCTA

I've also put the link to the reference photo on the Supplies List.

My older Barn Owl painting on YouTube

I have a barn owl tutorial published on my YouTube channel that I painted a few years ago before I started on Patreon. A few patrons have said they'd like to try painting it. I was going to make a full length version of it here for Patreon. I started to edit the footage but I stopped for two reasons. The first reason was that I wasn't happy with the way the final painting turned out. The second reason was that some of the footage had a blurry section in it. I dropped my iPhone on the floor half way through filming it (I use my iPhone to film my tutorials) and I damaged the camera. I had to buy another iPhone straight after painting the owl. If you'd like a copy of the line drawing and my final painting here is the link where you can download it from: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0mc1pgjq70putgv/AAB7smeU0NS9gUBf6bBpHY0Ea?dl=0

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

I'm looking for a substitute for gold ochre. I have quin. gold, yellow ochre, brown ocher and naples yellow. Hopefully one of these would work. I don't yet know all of the properties of the pigments ( granular, transparent, not fugitive, etc) so don't want to use something that does not work for this painting. Thank you.

Caroline

I'm really fascinated by the different backgrounds and swashes of colour you do, Louise. How do you decide what kind of background to do?

Louise De Masi

Hi Caroline, I experiment with backgrounds. I don't think about it too much other than what colours I will use. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. I've learnt to try to be a bit looser with the backgrounds and stop trying to control the paint so much. I used to get an idea in my head about what I wanted it to look like and then when it didn't do what I wanted it to do I'd fuss with it to try and make it behave. I now realise it's better to let it be and accept what it gives me.

Caroline

Thank you. I really think backgrounds add so much character to a picture, but I am nervous of splodging and ruining a painting I might have spent 3 hours on! But experimenting is the only way to unleash magic so maybe I will do some sketches of my subject trialling different backgrounds. Or photocopy my final subject and try that.

Caroline

half way through this one, and it's turning out a bit dark! I am trying a postcard size first, so hope to repeat!

Priscilla Tenzar

Absolutely gorgeous Louise. Thanks for sharing with all your students.

Nadine

Hi Louise! I’d love also a copy of the line drawing and your final painting of your original barn owl. Can you send me that? My email is nadine.fregin@gmail.com. Thank you!

Sue

Can you please suggest another color for Van Dyke Brown? Or a mix I may be able to make? Thank you!

Louise De Masi

Hi Sue, I just mixed some Lamp Black into Burnt Sienna and I got a colour that was very similar to Van Dyke Brown. If you don't have black you could try substituting Van Dyke Brown with Sepia.

Hollie Hitchcock

I am feeling silly, but I can’t find the link to the supply list

Louise De Masi

Hi Hollie, It's under my message to everyone below the video. There's a long list of files you can download.

Hollie Hitchcock

I am embarrassed to say: it was too obvious!😂 thank you!

Yiyi Dijkstra

Hi Louise, I have recently joined your patreon, and am excited about learning to paint with watercolor. In general, how do you determine which color to use to paint a background? The reference photo of the barn owl has the background in green, you have however chosen the color of the barn owl for the background. I would like to understand the decision/thinking proces. Thanks in advance!

Louise De Masi

Hi Yiyi and welcome again! I usually try to work with a limited palette so the painting has good colour harmony. That means I’ll often use colours I’ve already used on the subject on the background. It keeps everything tied together and avoids the background feeling separate or distracting. I also think about the mood I want. Sometimes a background that echoes the subject’s colours helps the main focus stand out more naturally than copying what’s in the photo. Reference photos are just a starting point, and changing the background colour is one of the easiest ways to make the painting feel more cohesive and personal.

Louise De Masi

Hi Carol, I mentioned in my message above that I'd send patrons a link via email for the line drawing of the other owl. Can you message me your email and I'll send you the link to download them? I didn't want to attach them with the other files because I thought it would create some confusion.

Carol Crawford Barfield

Hi Louise! I'd love a copy of the line drawing and your final painting of the orginal barn owl you did sometime back. Sorry about your iphone. My email address is barfield@volstate.net Sincerely yours, Carol Barfield

Louise De Masi

Lynn Muster

Just finished this, so happy! My first successful large wet in wet. Thank you Louise, could never have done this without you! I get it now 🙌🏻 Tip: mix your gray as Louise does. I almost just used Payne’s Gray and it would have been a mistake . The blue that shows through the mixed gray made all the difference!

Louise De Masi

That's great Lynn! I'm so pleased. Yes mixing grey is always a better option than pre-mixed greys. Paynes Grey does have its uses though.
