Hi everyone,

This is a tutorial for beginners.

With this painting I used two complementary colours and a little Lamp Black for the eye. I used a negative painting technique to add detail and I simplified and modified the subject.

The reference photo was taken by Kami and I downloaded it from Unsplash website. I changed the colours and lightened it in Photoshop so I have included a copy of the colour changed version for you to download.

Watch the whole video first and take your time with it when you begin painting. I hope you enjoy painting it.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Seal lennox

Hi Louise, I have painted the seahorse twice. Getting better each time. It is great for us beginners. Interesting to paint and learning skills which can be used on other paintings. Have also painted the leaves. Can't wait to try the seal painting. Thanks

Louise De Masi

Thanks Seal. That's the way to learn- keep practicing those techniques over and over until you can do them without thinking about it.

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful! Thank you for letting me know. I'm so happy you learned from the tutorial.

Emilia Kerr

I loved the seahorse even more than the seal! Can’t wait to do some more tomorrow

Louise De Masi

I love your enthusiasm! Thank you Emilia. Have fun with it.

Ida

I found when I used an HB pencil vs 2b it left a lot of graphite on the paper, which transferred to the painting.

Louise De Masi

Try using a sticky roller (for pet hair) Ida. You can roll it over the paper and it removes excess graphite without removing the line drawing.

Greet

Painting wet on wet is so much fun to do. Now I'm sure I want to continue with this. I'm very happy that I found you, Louise, and your tutorials. I agree with Emilia Kerr: Can't wait to do some more tomorrow. Then I'm going to finish the seahorse.

Jennifer Bolton-Gibbs

HI, I don't know if this is happening to others. But recently I can't view the tutorials because it 'tells me to sign in to confirm I'm not a bot. I'm already signed in to Patreon. Jenny

Louise De Masi

Hi Jenny, Dom here. Maybe log out and log back in and see if that works. I'll message you privately.

Linda

Just finished this beautiful seahorse but I changed the colours for fun. Thanks, Louise🥰🇦🇺.

Wendy Kelcey

I love this Louise! It will be a relaxing paint, and yet so effective. If I wanted a bit of a background, would a puff of blue coming in behind the seahorse and on a angle work? I’m thinking along the lines of some of the birds and animals. Thanks Louise! It a beautiful soothing paint!

Carol Factor

Love this! Can hardly wait to give it a try.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Wendy. Yes or you could use some violet- because I used that on the seahorse. Have a look at the goldfish background for an idea.

Wendy Kelcey

Thanks Louise. I did the fairy wren and then decided to do a bit of wash behind his tail and back end. It has been renamed “even birds have flatulence!” 😜 I guess the location can make all the difference! I’ll go for it with the seahorse. It would make a lovely card. 😊

Vee

What a lovely little guy! Can't wait to give it a go! Thank you very much Louise!

Nat Ford

It’s a pity that this transfer method left so much extra graphite scattered around at random. Thank you for the beginner tutorial though!

Corinne Marneffe

Hi Louise! I was wondering, what is the size of the eradicator brush you are using (usually, and in this piece)? Thanks much! Oh, also, an equivalent brush for Europe, maybe? A brand that can be found in any standard shop... (not in UK)

Louise De Masi

Hi Corinne, I just had a quick look through the video and I couldn't find the spot where I used it. I have two sizes, a small and a medium and I use the small one more often than the medium sized one.

Corinne Marneffe

Dear me, I thought I had posted my question under the old car piece, oops I'm so sorry! You used it for the wiper :-) I'll get the small size one, thank you Louise! PS - I loooooooove your pickup truck tutorial, I've tried it... errr 4 times :-D I'll post on your Facebook 'fanpage' ;-)

Louise De Masi

😝 - I used the small one on the old car. Thank you! Have fun.

Yvonne Walton

Hi Louise while doing this wonderful tutorial I notice my beautiful number 2 Divinci paint brush was looking like a hedgehog. The brush hairs have all parted and I was wondering if this brush can be saved or is it a new one for me. Thanks for your help Louise.

Louise De Masi

Hi Yvonne, It shouldn't look like a hedgehog when it's wet. Clean it with some warm water and gentle soap and reshape it with your fingers and let it dry. If it goes shaggy again when it's wet it might be time for a new one.

Grietje Cowie

I use Master's Brush Cleaner and Preserver to rejuvenate my brushes. Also, I learnt the hard way not to use my precious water colour brushes for painting with acrylics. :)

Janet Moulton

I’ll have to give it another go … I wasn’t sure which yellow to mix with Winsor violet and let’s just say my seahorse is brown and purple so I gave up lol

Barbara

Hi Louise! This tutorial is very relaxing and easy to follow...just what I need at this moment. I am using transparent yellow instead of Indian yellow and the mix looks good to me :)

Jodi Mercer

I really enjoyed this tutorial Louise; thank you. It's refreshing to be able to finish a painting in a day - well hours really. I used Colbalt Blue and Transparent Orange as my complementary colors and I was happy with the result. My husband liked it so much he said "that painting is for me, right?"

Louise De Masi

Lol - that's a lovely compliment from your husband. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks Jodi.

LisH

Thanks Louise. I enjoyed a first lesson in negative painting (using your colours more or less). And I took the hint for the background to cover some splatter. Maybe I should muster up the courage to put the effort on facebook, just to show you are not teaching an empty classroom.
