Hi everyone,

Here is the seal tutorial. With this painting I used a limited palette of only two colours. It's not too difficult to paint so I hope you enjoy it.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

Have fun!

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Just completed this tonight. Had so much fun doing this tutorial. Learned a valuable lesson. I nearly ruined the nose by fussing with it too much at the end, because I thought it needed tweaking. Manage to save it and now I have learned sometimes you just got to let the paint go where it goes and not fuss too much. Thank you so much for a great tutorial. Onwards to the next one. Decisions decision decisions :)

Louise De Masi

So true Natalie! I fuss too much as well sometimes and I have to stop. I'm glad you had fun. Thank you!

Cynthia Negrucci

This was my first tutorial. I painted it three times until I felt it looked decent. It was definitely a learning experience for me! I really enjoyed painting it. Onward ! Fingers crossed!

Mleong

Beautiful but much more challenging than it looks

Emilia Kerr

I’ve just finished this tutorial and I LOVE it! By no means perfect but so happy with the results. Great and easy to follow tutorial. This was my first from Louise and I just love how you talk through all the steps so clearly. Thank you! Looking forward to my next tutorial :)

Louise De Masi

That's fabulous Emilia. I'm so glad you had success. Thank you!

Bev Butler

Loved doing this one but definitely harder than it looks. I nearly ruined it by fussing, must stop doing that!

Sonja Mills

I just did this tutorial and thought I could avoid pencil marks by using watercolor pencil to sketch her out. Big mistake. I ended up just willy nilly guessing! While mine is recognizable as a seal, it’s far from good. I’m going back in for a second attempt utilizing all the progress photos. Super duper helpful, btw! You’re the absolute best and I am learning so much. Thank you for doing these for us.

Louise De Masi

Thanl you Sonja! Keep at it - it's not easy but you will see progress over time. ❤️

Dianna Abrahams

I think I did ok with this little guy .I will just keep keeping on 🙃🙂

Susan Luus

Hello Louise, I have a question about this tutorial. Your painting was on an A3 sheet- I’m doing mine on A4. What size paint brushes would you recommend to adjust for the smaller size paper? Wishing you well.

Susan Luus

Thank you very much Louise.

Diane

This was my first tutorial with you, Louise; and my first watercolor. I did paint on 100% cotton paper, but did not even know about stretching! Nevertheless, the little guy did come out. And thanks to your guidance, no hard tide lines. I'm not sure why I used an HB pencil tho. Next time 2H!

Louise De Masi

That's great Diane! Stretching the paper before you paint is a game changer.

This one took a lot longer to paint, and it was harder than it seems. I painted it on a Winsor-Newton watercolor pad (12.7cm x 17.8cm) for the watercolor month practices. I normally use Arches, so I'm taking the opportunity to practice but also get used to the new paper. Mine came out a bit on the warm gray side than cool gray after rounds of washes and touchups and it got muddy but not too bad. Yes, the eradicator is a lifesaver, :). Can't live without it! Thank you again Louise!

Marie Jarreau

Many years ago, when I served in the US Navy, as air traffic controller on a tiny little island, there were many times we had no traffic to control whatsoever. That tiny little 3 x 9 mile island was teaming with shore-life. Various seagoing birds and mammals nested there. I spent a large part of my 18 month tour, ecstatically, photographing shore birds and especially the giant elephant seal in their nesting habitat. I do have quite a lot of photographs of all of them and now look forward to rendering some of my favorites in watercolor. This little seal pup certainly reminds me of some of those photos, which I will soon be digging out of my stored photo resources. This particular watercolor exercise I believe will definitely help me learn to render the colors. TY Louise for this one especially.

Louise De Masi

What wonderful memories to have Marie, and how fabulous to have all those photographs to revisit and paint from now. I hope you enjoy painting the little seal, and that it helps when you start working from some of your own photos.

Corinne Marneffe

So cute! I was eagerly waiting for this one :-) look forward to giving it a go :-) Thanks Louise!

Ali B

Ooh, this is gorgeous, thanks Louise!

Wendy Kelcey

Oh Louise, it’s just precious! I can’t wait to paint it!

Laura Usher

What a cute little seal, they are precious animals, so sweet

Vee

Such a little cutie!! Thank you!!!!! 💗💖💗

Judy Breedlove

Adorable and soft looking. Thank you, Louise.

Nancy Guenther

So cuddly looking with that thick, soft fur. Thank you, Louise!

Debbie Smith

I'm excited about painting this cutie! My maiden name is Seal, so this one will be especially fun for me!

Nettie Moss

Oh - so adorable, that sweet face! Look forward to doing this - soon I hope ;-)

Carol Crawford Barfield

This little guy is adorable. I think he may be a sea lion, because it looks like he has tiny exterior ears (like the sea lions in your watercolor book). One quick way to tell a sea lion from a seal is to look at its ears. Sea lions and fur seals (members of the eared seal family) have visible ear flaps, while true seals only have ear holes. Either way, he's really cute. I learned a lot. Thank you.

Katherine Antonini

Beautiful! This reminds me so much of Jane Davies’ style of painting.

Louise De Masi

Thanks for the information Carol - that's very interesting. I wondered that when I painted him. I'll look for that next time.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Katherine. I just looked Jane up - she does lovely work. 💕

Katherine Antonini

Yes, I love the soft, barely there brush strokes that are in her paintings and in this one as well. It looks like it would be so easy, but it’s not. It’s beautiful 🤩

Quantum Artistic

This was the first tutorial I tried and was shocked how cute my seal came out. Thank you!

Barb

Loved the tutorial. Thank you so much!

Nancy Guenther

Thank you so much, Louise. I'm really happy with this little guy. I think it's the best whiskers I've done. I was looking for something simple to try out Fabriano Artistico paper for the first time and this was still challenging. New paper always takes some getting used to. I did a Google lens search with the image you took at the aquarium, and it comes up as an Australian Sea Lion.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Nancy. Yes it does take time to get used to new paper- I'm glad it worked out ok for you. Thank you for letting me know what this little guy is.
