Hi everyone,

Our daughter turned 30 last week so last weekend we had a family reunion at her home. We finally got to spend some time with our younger son who lives in Sydney. The last time we saw him was in April this year I think. He and his girlfriend came back to Coffs Harbour with us where we live and spent a few days here. On Wednesday morning we took them for a boat ride on the Nambucca river and then we stopped for some lunch at a cafe near the beach. It was so good to see them.

When they left on Thursday I was inspired to paint a boat on water. I painted a row boat on water in acrylic paint a few years ago but I've never tried painting water in watercolour so this is a learning experience for me. I painted a little study first and now I'm painting a larger  painting. I'm trying out different blues to see what I prefer. I must be enjoying it because I was up at 6.00am this morning eager to get into my painting room to keep going with it. If it works out ok I'll make a tutorial for you and share what I learned.

While I was sitting in my painting room this morning I looked out the window and saw Dom walking down to the painting studio we are building. He was dressed in his work clothes. His tool belt was strapped on and he was carrying an electrical cord under his arm. He glanced up at me through the window and gave me the eye. I know what his face was saying. Without any words he told me, "Get your old clothes on woman and get out here and help me." So I will leave my painting for now and go out and help him work.

I've included some photos of the studio. Today we should get the sliding glass door in and tomorrow we will start working on the guttering. I've been waiting for this studio for 21 years now so you can imagine how excited I am to finally see it getting built. I'll share more with you as it progresses.

Tomorrow I will be posting a tutorial of a fairly simple painting of a seal so look out for that.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Louise

You deserve that studio! It's so beautiful where you are, no wonder you are an artist. I can't wait to try painting water. I hope it works out for you and you are able to post it. Thank you Ms De Masi.

I love when you share photos of your life with us!! And I’m really excited to see the row boat ❤️ the studio looks like it’s progressing well !! I know you must be thrilled to spend time with your family 😊 wishing you more visits and much happiness

I love the little boat. You can paint anything! Sounds like life is good … weather, kids and the studio. Thanks for sharing 😍. Here in the Pacific North West (Vancouver, B.C., Canada), we could use Dom and you to help us build an ark ⛈ ☔️ 💨. Oh wait … a patch of blue ⛅️!

Kim Gurgo

Wow Louise, exciting times!! Your studio is going to be absolutely wonderful. I can’t wait to see how you do the fun stuff like decorating and adding all the art supplies! Do you think you’ll ever want to exit the studio lol my guess is you’ll spend at least a month in there!

Kim Gurgo

Ps for not doing water for a long time, you really can paint anything perfectly! Did you use cobalt blue in the study and ultramarine for the in progress? It definitely gives such a different mood doesn’t it?! I’ve been experimenting with greens and aquas in my water as well - a colour I often see in the Moreton Bay region.

Sara Farrington

I love the rowboat painting so far. I look forward to a tutorial on that one.

Augusto Machado

Lovely Louise! Congrats and thank you for sharing! Beautiful work, by the way, I love water scenes!

Dawn David

I look forward to the boat tutorial. Congratulations on your new artspace. I 'm excited for you and can't wait to see the finished building!

Louise Collier

Family are the best😍 and your studio looks great, what an idyllic setting! Thank you for sharing!

Lisa A

Thanks for sharing, I’m very happy for you. Don’t forget to plan an area for the grandchildren, mine have their own supplies to work with and love working in grandma’s studio.

Wendy Parsons

Nambucca Heads is such a lovely area, especially the river. We have stayed there a few times in a unit overlooking the river. The fishing was always good too. Your studio is coming along so well. Nothing quite like your own space, away from the house! Well men have their sheds! So looking forward to the rowing boat tutorial and many thanks for all you do Louise.

Geraldine Lucas

So happy for you to have your own studio. I know just wonderful paintings will be created there.

Delores Lopez

Thank you for your update. Happy 39th to your daughter, and congrats on your new studio! It is nice to have a hubby that is so talented too. Thank you for your hard work on the tutorials.

Karen Wilson

I have wanted to paint a boat for so long. I certain hope this means it’s going to be a tutorial. And don’t work so hard. We need you too!!!

Wendy Kelcey

Thanks for sharing! Wonderful pictures! You must be thrilled.👍😍

Cynthia Keith

I love your tow boat painting…. I can see that as a wonderful tutorial! Your painting studio

That’s so exciting. You won’t know yourself with all that wonderful space. lucky you to have such a handyman to make your dream a reality. I have a collapsible table in the corner of the office….. suits me but is restricting. Coffs is such a lovely spot and catching up with your family such a lift for your spirits. I look forward to your boat painting which is looking amazing by the glimpse we’ve got.

How lovely to see the family and happy 30th to your daughter! The studio is looking fabulous, Louise and you’re so fortunate that Dom is so handy - is he fully recovered from his injuries now? I’m interested in the size of the studio - could you say the dimensions, please? I’m looking at about a 3.2 x 6m room, as we don’t need council approval for that size. It will double as my art space and my younger daughter’s music studio. 😊

Cynthia Keith

Ooops painting studio looks great. So exciting.

Kathy Wilden

It’s funny, I’ve been wanting to do a boat painting lately. I downloaded a few photos. Your studio is looking great , can’t wait to see the finished product.

Thank you for sharing your lovely family. We had a reunion with one of our little families last weekend. We still cannot find a time that suits our little family in Long Jetty but soon they promise. Our son will be down from Sydney with his 6month old son this Friday. We’ve only met him once before. We are fortunate to see our daughter and hubby most weeks as they have a farm nearby at Tallong but alas…our little family in Perth….it’s been nearly 2 years. Maybe next year we’ll be able to hug them all. Louise your studio is coming along really well. I’m excited for you! Imagine the masterpieces that you’ll be churning out. You’ll need an intercom so your hubby can let you know it’s time to come home! Well done and good luck with it all. Thank you for being such an inspiration.

BEVERLEY MORTON

oh I'm a new painter and have loved the contact with you louise. i am doing my first and have learned so much. i also want to paint water. i have been a photographer and if i could paint water and glass i would be over the moon. I'm not perfect but am enjoying the learning and getting a reasonable result. i am 81 years old and thought i couldn't draw. I have globally famous artists amongst my children and Grandchildren so am thrilled to be able to turn out something. Thanks for sharing. Beverley Morton.

Debra wilson

Marion Preston

I'm so pleased to see you are doing a seascape Louise, and you are learning, just as we are. I love all kinds of painting subjects, but would really like to do landscapes and seascapes I eagerly await seeing the techniques you will be implementing and I am sure you will make it so much easier for us learners. Your studies look amazing. Fantastic to hear you are getting a studio of your very own, it must be so, so exciting. I would love a studio dedicated to painting only (currently using the laundry), it is looking fantastic so far and I am sure we would all love to see lots of progress photos. Wonderful to hear you can finally see and hold all of your family again too!

Robin R McCarthy

Louise I have so missed you and the painting experiences I had with you! We lost our adult grand daughter last December and were in the process of a major move at that time and so our lives have really been in limbo for awhile. I just have barely been able to paint. I now live in Chapala Jalisco MX. Very close to famous Ajijic and Lake Chapala. I have my own studio and when I saw this row boat in the water pop up on my email this AM I was inspired. So I'll be learning with you again and thank you for all you do for us! Happy Birthday to your treasured daughter!

Louise De Masi

Oh Robin. I'm so so sorry. I can only imagine the pain you and your family must be going through. Huge hugs. Thank you!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Marion. I like to step out of my comfort zone sometimes and try some different things. Painting in the laundry sounds interesting! I am very excited about the studio. Today we are putting in the eave over the northern wall. Dom thought I needed some sun protection from the hot summer sun. I'm glad he thought of putting an eave in on that wall. It gets the sun all day long so I will appreciate a little shade on that wall.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Marianne. Who knows? Maybe I will teach face to face again one day. At least I'll have somewhere to do it now if I decide to. 😝

Joy Wright

How wonderful for you. Is the Seal the little one we see at the end of the crab tutorial? I hope so I have been waiting for him to join the little shell and crab series. Looking forward to it.

Joy Wright

I just saw, can't wait to try him out. Thank you

Henny Kartika Sary

Looking forward to having this lovely boat tutorial then start painting it...thanks Louise :)

Vee

Dear Louise, what a most enjoyable post ! It is great to hear how your family was able to get together again - a happy reunion I'm sure. You studio is getting along very nicely - can well understand that you must be so anxious to move in! Thank you for the darling little seal - it is adorable! The boat in the water is so exciting, can't wait to try that. Thank you for all your hard and beautiful work......it is so deeply appreciated.

Gina Squitieri

I'm really looking forward to painting this!

Jan Weaver

You painted such a clear picture of your life with this post. I’m a new patron, but so glad to be part of this community. I had heard that your situation there was so much different. It warmed my heart that you were able to move about and visit with precious family and have a moment of “normal” life. Thank you for this glimpse into your personal space. Your work inspires me and the intricate beauty feeds my soul.

Hanna

Do you have enough brushes? ;)

Shelly Solle

Every artist has very large collection of brushes. It is part of the process. :)
