Hi everyone,

Here's a fairly simple tutorial for beginner painters. It's only 28 minutes long and it shouldn't take long to paint. Painting the stripes on the candy cane is the most difficult part but it will help with gaining brush control. Take your time with it. I used both a wet on dry and a wet on wet technique.

All of the files you need are attached below my message here.

I used a reference photo for the candy cane. It was taken by Edgar Torabyan and I downloaded it from Unsplash website: Here is the link: https://unsplash.com/photos/XrBPd_QD4nA

I didn't use a reference photo for the bow. I drew it myself and painted it without a reference photo.

I hope you enjoy it.

Louise

PS: I will post the boat on water tutorial this month. The Pelican and orchid tutorials I will post in January.

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

I just finished my second Candy Cane. I seem to really improve with the second attempt:) It was so much fun and I had a chance to implement all of your teachings along the way. Thank you. Really makes my day to be able to go into my zen space and paint. I also completed the catus, fish and new drills. I really appreciate your holiday beginner tutorials. I would like to see a new post for each holiday, beyond just Christmas. I would definitely paint them. Thanks again. Off to paint the Christmas Decorations 1 and then 2.

For those that haven't heard this the bend represents the Shepard Jesus Christ, the white is for his purity, the red for the blood he shed for you and me and finally turn it upside down and it is a J for Jesus.

This was a bit harder than it looks! Getting the lines smooth and looking curved was a definite process.
