Hi everyone,

Here is Part 1 of the Boat on water tutorial. I was inspired to paint this after we took a little boat up the Nambucca River a month or two ago.

Part 2 of this tutorial is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/60109077

This is the first time I have painted water like this in watercolour so it was a learning experience for me. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be, probably because I adopted the rule my drawing teacher used to drum into me all the time: 'work broad to specific'. I painted loosely first without looking at the reference photo and then I slowly started to add details as I looked more closely at my reference photo.

I used only three colours for this painting. The blue I chose was French Ultramarine but I also did a study of this painting using Antwerp Blue and I love the colour of that one - you'll see it in this tutorial. Experiment with blues that you have.

The reference photo I used for this painting was taken by Oliver Cole and I downloaded it from Unsplash website. Here is the link: https://unsplash.com/photos/HLGMLpxOSjk

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. There are lots of progress photos included to help you. I've included an enlarged version of the line drawing spread over two files for those who aren't sure how to enlarge files on their printer.

Have fun!

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from. Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Hi Pat- Try refreshing the page or logging out and back in again.

Hello Louise! I'm new to your patreon family, and adore your style. I have a question regarding the sizes of paper sizes you used on your boat study, and on the larger one. Thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Joe. The size of the paper of the large one in this tutorial is listed on the Supplies List. It's 35cm by 50cm (13.7 by 19.6 inches). The study I think (from memory) was on an A3 size piece of paper (11.7 by 16.5 inches).

Thank you so much!

Even Santa couldn't bring something this good to my inbox! Thank you so much

I have been looking forward to this since you first posted pictures. My daughter loves the nautical look so I will be painting it for her. I am glad you shared the different blues you used, I know she will prefer the Antwerp blue so that is probably the one I will use. I hope to start after Christmas as this week will be busy, but I am concerned that here in Canada we will be going into lock down soon, so I will have plenty of time after Christmas. Hope you and your family have the best Christmas and coming New Year. I am so thankful that my Christmas present to myself was to support you on Patreon...best Christmas present ever!!!I have learned so much, and I look forward to what this coming year will bring. Many thanks.

I am just a beginner but I am going to have a go at this gorgeous watercolour. I will try until I get it right. Thank you so much for your in-depth tutorials Louise, they are certainly needed for a beginner like me

Woops error...anyway i am using this second post to say how wonderful your tutorials are and the images you use are just my taste thank you

I'm really excited to try this tutorial. Thanks so much, Louise!

Marika Roth

Looking forward to painting this. I have painted realistic wildlife on hot press fairly successfully, but when I try to do larger background areas I find it hard to control the paint since the paper does not absorb as much as cp. I use Fabriano 300 lb hot press. I have not been able to find Arches HP in 300lb here in the US. Thanks

Marika Roth

What is the skill needed to do a large background area on hot press? I am nervous of starting since I have had difficulty achieving the control on HP when working on a large area or wash background. Also, HP can be much more sensitive when removing masking fluid. Thinking of not using it. Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Marika, if you are not confident using hot pressed paper then use cold pressed. I only used hot pressed paper because I prefer to use pencils on the smooth paper. I used a soluble graphite pencil on some of the ropes and I used a white watercolour pencil on a small area of the water. I'm sure you'll have good results using cold pressed if that's what you are used to.

What a lovely study! I love water - sea. river, lake, pond whatever. This is going to be a lot of fun. Thank you dear Louise

Debbie Lowrey

I am about to start this but I fancy putting in a background. I don’t know of what yet! I will post on FB when I have done it. Wish me luck!

Leigh Cleave

Thanks for this...I have been waiting to try a 'water' painting...so this was the motivation I needed to spend some time painting. I used Antwerp Blue ...haven't' used it before ...I have an interesting relationship with Ultramarine Blue. Also I am trying to be economical and use up my supplies so I painted on my Arches 26cmx36xm block....so some of the fine detial was challenging - but I am happy with it...thanks again!

I painted this boat and I love the result I achieved. I was showing my paintings to a friend who makes puzzles and she loved the boat painting. I know that the photo was from Unsplash, my question is if I can authorize her to use it. Louise can you let me know? I posted the photo on Your page on Facebook. Thank you so much for your help.
