Hi everyone,

Here is the Leaves in Glass Vase tutorial.

I've not painted a glass subject before so this was a learning experience for me. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be but that might have something to do with the fact that I chose a simple vase to paint.

Watch it all the way through before you decide if you want to paint it. There are lots of progress photos included to help.

Today I've been working on a script for a video that I plan to do about paint consistency that should help all the beginner painters. I'll try to get that finished as soon as I can.

Have a fabulous week!

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

My finished painting looks nice, however the ellipse at the top and the curve at the bottom look wonky. I’m going to try it again.

Louise De Masi

Ellipses are hard to paint Janet. I'm glad you aren't giving up. 💕

Beverly Amato

Hello, Louise. I struggled with paint saturation. Mine is always too watery, especially mixing colors for the green. Then when I add paint to my wet paper, it gets even lighter. Any tips are helpful.

Louise De Masi

Hi Beverly, try using freshly squeezed pigment when you mix. That way you can use a slightly damp brush to pick up the pigment- mix them with the slightly damp brush until you arrive at the colour you want then add very small amounts of water with your brush to adjust the consistency and value of the mixture. If you are using paint on the palette that has hardened you have to wet it first to activate it and in doing so you can often end up with more water than you need in your paint mixture.

Beverly Amato

Thank you, Louise. That’s exactly my problem. I try to re-use dried paint rather than fresh squeezed. Maybe you could create a tutorial on how to use those dried paints? I always squeeze out more than I can use.

Louise De Masi

If you don't have a large palette- you should get yourself one when you can. Put the colours you use most often on it. They can stay on the palette even after they have hardened. If you need to mix colours- squirt a little bit of fresh pigment on top of the hardened pigment on the palette and that way you won’t waste any paint.

I loved this one, Louise! Thank you!

Jill Lewis

I have been eagerly awaiting this tutorial, just love the simple elegance of the composition (found myself holding my breath as you painted each leaf, leaving the gap for the veins!) I was doing a delphinium piece (would love it if you could do a delphinium tutorial some day) but shall now put it aside to try this one! Any suggestion for a substitute for Hooker's Green, I was thinking of using Sap Green with a dab of Transparent Yellow but might it be too acidic? Thanks, Louise

Louise De Masi

Use Sap Green and see if you like the colour. I have used W and N Sap Green often. It's a very useful green. Thanks Jill.

Rebecca Swingle

Louise, how do you choose when to use paints fresh from tubes or from pans / your palette(s)?

Louise De Masi

Hi Rebecca, I prefer to always use tube paint particularly if I want to mix dark colours. I get fresh paint out when I do that. I find I can get really dark mixes with fresh paint. If I painted outdoors I'd use pans. Many artists prefer pans so it depends what you prefer and what you are used to using.

Pam Stewart

I loved doing this! Never had the confidence to try glass before—you made it so easy! Thanks! Look forward to seeing more like it!

Louise De Masi

That's great! Thanks Pam. I'll try a more difficult vase next time.

Nancy Guenther

I loved this tutorial. It was very relaxing and rewarding to see the glass vase take shape. This was something I really needed. I learned a lot.....and I didn't mess up the shadow for once!

Louise De Masi

I'm glad you enjoyed it Nancy. I'm keen to paint more too.

Renee Howard Cassese

I'm going to give this a try! I don't know that I'd call myself an advanced WC artist, maybe intermediate. How does one determine their own skill level?

Louise De Masi

Good question Renee. I have difficulty determining the levels on the tutorials myself. I think it's best to watch the tutorial first and see if you can understand it and if you can then have a go. Also try painting it more than once.

Renee Howard Cassese

Thank you Louise! Most of the paintings I've done in your tutorials have been intermediate. I have done 1 or 2 advanced and they turned out well. I think the key is to give it a try and take my time and stick with it. I'm at a point in my art journey when I really need to challenge myself and stick with a painting till I get it right.

Roz

Another fantastic tutorial. Thank you Louise 😊

Cathy Bowden

I have finally taken the challenge and completed this one yesterday, NY Eve. Overall I am happy with it, but also had problems with the ellipe's. The plan is to the glass again so I can better understand how to get the curve correct. I was very happy with my leaves and really did enjoy this tutorial. One day I may even be able to paint as fast as you and not have to stop and start hahahaha. Thankyou Louise for another great tutorial.
