Hi everyone,

Here is the Fighting Fish tutorial. This is a happy, lively painting that was a lot of fun to paint. I've listed it as an advanced tutorial but it's difficult to classify. If you feel that you are an intermediate painter, watch it first before you decide to paint it. I've included plenty of progress photos to assist.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here.

The reference photo was taken by Worachat Sodsri and I downloaded it from Unsplash website. Here is the link: https://unsplash.com/photos/nCz_ZgnbtaE

Have fun painting it.

Louise

❤️🧡💙

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Thank you Shingen! That's always a good idea- just relax, let go of the outcome and accept what it gives you! Try to do the same thing with the fish now. ❤️🥰

Michelle Gibson

boy this one was a tough one. It worked out well but required a few corrections much like yours.

Basia

Hi Louise, loved doing this tutorial, did the watercolour blooms first time...I think they will become a feature on my other paintings as well...they give a great new dimension....hope you do more fish in water....somehow its all very relaxing, many Thanks!

Louise De Masi

That's great Basia! I love using them and they do add visual interest. Thank you.

Capa Jensen

I have tried to do this painting so many times, but always when I get to the deep red of the fins, it goes south and not in a "hey, this could look artistic!" way. I can't get the red to look striking like yours does, and instead of the paint blending smoothly, the tail just becomes a hodge-podge mess of pink. Perhaps I'm using too much water... I'm determined to complete this fish though! It's definitely a fighting fish - it's fighting me every step of the way haha

Kileen P Smith

I've done all your fish paintings except this one. I have given them to my dear friend Babs. She adores them all. So, I am going to give this one a try and, if I can pull it off, give it to her for Christmas!! Keeping my fingers crossed!

Cristina Nava

I love this painting. It is amazing how you worked with values to represent the distance between the different layers of the tail. Just beautiful! 😍

Bren

Beautiful......❤️

Janet Copeland

Really like this fish! Color is perfect for such a fun-loving little thing. She looks like she is dancing and showing off her new skirt!! Really cute. I will give this one a try. I think I can do it.

Anita C. Paul

This looks fun... I'm painting the tulip now, going to do this one next!

Sharon E Toombs

GORGEOUS! It's going to be a trying one for me but I've got to give it a go. You do FABULOUS work Louise.

Mercedes Sánchez Arauzo

I think for me is too difficult in this moment, nevertheless it is really wonderful possibility to try it in a time

Tonya Kortekaas

Hi Louise: do you have a suggestion for what I could use if I don’t have Windsor Red? I’ve been playing around with the reds I have mixed with the transparent yellow to try to get a nice bright orange that you have on the brightest parts of the fish and I’m not having too much luck yet.

Louise De Masi

Hi Tonya, Daniel Smith's Pyrrole Red has the same pigment code as Winsor Red. Otherwise try switching your yellow if you are finding that the oranges you are mixing don't appeal to you.

Dee Smith

Betta Splendens lover here, this is the male fish the females are smaller and not as colorful. They are delightful fish to have as pets. Glad that Louis chose to paint one. Can't wait to have a go or two or three at him.

Marika Roth

Other than the Pyrole Red, what other substitutes do you suggest for the W. Red. I have Transparent Orange, WN, Scarlet Lake, Cadmium Red, Alazarin Crimson. My yellows are Windsor Yellow Lemon, Hansa yellow, DS, Cadmium Yellow, and Nickel Azo Yellow, DS. Thank you again.

Louise De Masi

Hi Marika, Try Scarlet Lake and mix it with the Winsor Yellow and see if you like the colour.

Anna Mihai

Really amazing work, Louise! I'm excited to try this one. Do you usually have paint left over on your palettes? If so, any suggestions what to do with the extras?

Louise De Masi

Thanks Anna. Yes sometimes I do. I'll try to use it up on another painting when I can but if I can't I wash my palette.

Susan

Louise, how do I access a list of all your tutorials on Patreon?

Louise De Masi

Hi Susan, underneath my message on this tutorial, you'll see the links are added under the heading "Tutorial Index Links to Bookmark." I always add the links to the indexes in the messages of each of my video tutorials so they are easy to find.

Shelly Solle

Louise, you show your brush and say it is a Casaneo oval pointed series 898 brush. However, that brush does not look like that. The brush in the tutorial is more of a rounded oval tip.

Louise De Masi

Hi Shelly, yes that's correct. When they are wet they become rounded like mine. They probably have the bristle stiffener in them in the photos you are seeing.

Shelly Solle

Oh ok, I have one but it looks different. It will work I'm sure. :). Of course I didn't have the red so off to Dick Blick I go. :)

Lezli

So, about a month ago I hit my head, got a concussion and couldn’t watch any videos, or do much of anything else. Except paint. So I painted a Betta. Twice. I just got back to being able to look at my phone, and saw this and had to laugh. Yours is better than mine, but I’m definitely trying this one.

Louise De Masi

Lezli I'm so sorry you hit your head. I hope you're ok. 😘

Fran Kalb

Thanks Louise for clarifying the copyright info...so important!

Gabriela Martinez

I am working on this, and I found it more difficult that any other painting. I will keep trying

Vee

Oh, this is a stunner!!! Much too advanced for me, but nevertheless, I am going for it! Tank you very much, dear Louise!

Shelly Solle

I hate negative painting. I hate negative painting. I hate negative painting. :::sigh::: Finished.

Peiying

Absolutely loved the finished work. I have been following you on YT for a while and decided to take the plunge. This is my first image to work on. It's a bit more advanced than my level but I loved how you guide us through each of the steps and provided progress photos. Thank you so much!!

Janeen West

Hi Louise! The paper size you recommend (A3 11.7 x 16.5) is too large to fit on my board. The largest I can go is 10 x 14. Would that size still work?

patreon

Hi Louise! I painted this fish several times and it's definitely looking better.

patreon

Oops! I sent that too soon by mistake. My question is this: Do I add water to the orange mix as in Wet on Wet? Or is the wet paper enough moisture to get the right result? I prefer using 300lb paper. Is that a problem with this? I also have to practice my water blooms. I enjoy so many of your tutorials and couldn't learn nearly as much without you. It is very hot and dry here in central California and the air conditioner is on 24/7. Maybe that makes a difference. Thank you so much for all your advice. Take care, and I look forward to hearing back from you. Janet

Louise De Masi

Hi Janet, 300lb paper is perfect to use. You want a small amount of water in the mixture so that the paint bleeds or creeps. If it's got too much water in it - it will spread out of control on the wet paper and if it is too thick it won't creep, so try to find that ratio where it creeps but not out of control.

Lynn Muster

I have white acrylic ink, would this be an OK substitute for the opaque white?
