Hi everyone,

Here is the Rose Bud tutorial. This is a rose from my garden. It's from the same rose bush as the rose that's on my Patreon banner. It's a beautiful rose called 'Heaven Scent'.

I've listed this tutorial as suitable for beginner and intermediate painters. I think beginners with some experience could try to paint it.

It's always a good idea to watch my tutorials all the way through before you begin painting. Then you can decide whether or not you think you could try painting it yourself. I also suggest painting the same subject more than once. I often paint the same subject two or three times. Occasionally the first painting I do is the best but more often than not, my second and third attempts are better than my first.

Another tip is to not rush. Take your time when you paint and enjoy the process. Take plenty of breaks because painting is tiring. This tutorial is just over an hour in length but the rose itself took me all day to paint.

I've included a lot of progress photos of my painting to help. All of the files you'll find below my message here. The reference photo is my own.

Experiment with your colours. I used Permanent Rose as the pink for the rose but you could substitute it with a colour that you have. The greens you can mix from blue and yellow. When you want your green darker use a bit more blue.

Have fun!

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

I just painted this again this time in the larger size A3. I am giving it to my sister framed. Loved painting this beautiful rose. Thanks, Louise🥰.

You answered my question about practice. I often find myself wanting to try again, and I have one painting I’ve considered doing a third time. Another thing I like to do is practice a part of a painting I’m struggling with. For instance, I’m still running into problems getting the right amount of water on my paper along with the right amount of paint/water ratio on my brush. It helps me to just concentrate on a petal or leaf. I can make mistakes and analyze what went wrong, and immediately try again. It helps me experiment and learn without the frustration of “why can’t I get this right.” (I’m very self critical.)

Louise De Masi

You have the right attitude to succeed Anne. Have patience with yourself and keep reflecting on what's working and what's not.

I feel like a pest! However, I wanted to tell you how much I got out of this tutorial even though, so far, I’ve only watched it. I had started some peony buds I found on Pinterest (just for my personal practice) that I had started before joining Patreon. I wasn’t happy with anything I had done, so I put the painting aside. Then I decided I wanted to try this tutorial, and one of the things you talked about was “simplifying.” You also made some changes to the way you added color, so it wasn’t exactly like the photo, but it was still beautiful. My peony drawing was too complicated. There were so many intricate lines and spaces that I was having trouble seeing what I was doing. I was getting frustrated because I kept making mistakes. But I decided to go back and give it another try because I wanted to practice some of the things I saw in this tutorial, hoping I might feel more confident when I got to the rose bud. I did so much better, Louise! I have always followed my reference photos very closely. This time I decided to leave some of the detail out, which made it so much easier. My blending was better, too. I’m starting to figure out how wet to get my paper, and how much paint/water I need on my brush. I was happy yesterday evening, and I thought maybe I just had a good session. But I worked on it again this afternoon, and I made even more progress. I’m thrilled to finally find someone I can learn from. I’ve tried so many courses/tutorials, and I always ended up feeling like “this isn’t quite it.” Thank you so much for your wonderful instruction. Were you by any chance a teacher before you started doing this? You’re very good at it.

Louise De Masi

Please don't feel like a pest Anne. I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed the tutorial and found it helpful! It's great that you were able to apply some of the concepts to your own practice and that you're making progress with your peony painting. Simplifying the reference photo definitely makes a big difference. Thank you for your kind words about my teaching. I actually do have a background in teaching, so it's nice to hear that it comes through in my tutorials. I was a school teacher before I started on Patreon. If you have any questions or if there's anything else I can do to help, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Finished this painting and enjoyed it. I did two at a time; switching from one (140lb) to the other (300lb). It gave me the opportunity to check how well I mixed (diluted) the color. I always use 300lb, my husband spoiled me years ago and encouraged me to always get the best "tools". With that said, I wanted to replace a well used size 2 brush, with your suggested Da Vinci Maestro Series 35. I only found it available in a set (I think it was thru Amazon) of 4 brushes over $100. Is there another brand(manufacturer) of small round brushes you could suggest? Thank you for your wonderful tutorials. They are the best! Theresa

Theresa

Yes, I'm in Michigan, USA. I will check Dick Blick. Thank you!

Elaine

Thank you so much Louise, it’s beautiful as always 🥰

Debra Broido

I am always amazed at the details you can see that I don’t notice until you paint them.

DARIA ZEMELEAGA

Beautiful! I'm excited about what you're doing. Best thoughts for you!

Sarah Dagostino

I have loved watching your youtube videos for a long time now. Today I took the plunge and joined Patreon. I watched your lovely rose tutorial and it's so detailed and perfect for me as a beginner. I'm about to start drawing the rose now so hopefully in a few days I'll have something resembling your rose on my paper!

Lily O

Thank you Louise! It's lovely and simple, and am looking forward to trying it! Please rest well after your bout with covid.

Pam Stewart

A other great tutorial! The finished product sure doesn’t look like beginner work. I noticed you used different paper. Did you like it? I’m such sn Arches fan and generally haven’t been happy with other papers I’ve tried, but certainly would trust any recommendation you might make.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Pam. Yes I do like using it. It's a bit cheaper than Arches. It won't replace Arches paper for me but I'll use it to do my studies on.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Sarah. Welcome again. Take your time with it and have fun.

Nancy Guenther

I loved this tutorial, Louise. I did it in one go on 9 x 14 paper which was challenging for the rose itself, but I love the way it turned out. I learn so much in each tutorial and can see my progress. Thank you so much, as always.

Aurora Junier

I didn't expect it so soon! Can't wait to try it out

Simi

why does my rose look like blob of pink and purple color patches? it doesn't look like a rose at all

Louise De Masi

Hi Simi, I've no idea why it would look like a blob of pink and purple patches. What paper are you using?

Simi

I’m using Arches. I know I just need to practice A LOT. And I think it would also help me if I watch the whole tutorial first.

Yvonne Walton

Thank you Louise it’s given me the confidence to paint again after a month off. Haven’t found the time to paint. Looking for a new house as our landlord is selling it. Lots of pressure.

Louise De Masi

I hope you find something soon Yvonne so you can breathe easier and get back to doing things you love.

Jessica Day

Thanks for the reminder about taking our time. I always seem to forget that just because the tutorial is an hour, you didn’t paint it in an hour. Looking forward to giving this a try.

Dawn Michelsen

I finished the tutorial today. I am going to give it to an aunt who lost her sister today. I think it will be very meaningful to her. Thank you for the instruction. I am realizing I need some of the supplies you use. Especially, those Davinic Maestro brushes. Dawn

Polly Thompson

This is the first thing I painted that I am really pleased with. You're an excellent teacher. Very organized and focused. You are addressing the project with no distracting chatter. I was "in the zone" with you. Color me a very pleased Patron. Love your traceables, too!!

Polly Thompson

Good idea. I should watch it first, too.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Dawn and thank you. My deepest condolences to you and your aunt.

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful! I'm glad. Thanks very much Polly.

I just started the first pink wash of the flower. Even though I keep the water away from the edges when wetting the paper, when I add the paint, I’m still getting the ugly dark line around the edges. What am I doing wrong? Thanks 🌹

Louise De Masi

Hi Keannie, what paper are using? It could be that. If you could send me a photo of your painting that would be good so I could see what you are concerned about. ldemasi@iprimus.com.au Thanks.

Beverly Amato

I tried this painting, but the pink bleeding into the white of the petals looked ugly, so I turned the rose into a pink rose.

Shasta

I’m looking forward to doing this one.

Sharon Segreto

Hi Louise! I finally found the intestinal fortitude to join Patreon; now I'm hoping I have the time to devote to watching and practicing. Covid hit me pretty hard (financially) and it's taking a minute to find a way out of this mess -- thank the stars I already own my home. Anyway, just wanted to say "hi" and express my gratitude for your talent and your willingness to share it. You're an incredibly intuitive artist & that's a quality I genuinely appreciate.

Deborah Russell

It is easy to be successful with everything you provide. Thank you!

Nancy Schmidt

Louise, I just recently found your tutorials. I’m starting this rosebud and you have made the step by step instructions so clear and very helpful for a beginner.
