Here is the chicken tutorial. There's been quite a few patrons waiting patiently for this one.

Here in Australia, chickens are often called 'chooks' (rhymes with books). We had about 8 chooks when our kids were growing up. The kids loved them and so did I, but I was the one who had to get up at the crack of dawn every day to let them out of their coop 😳 ☀️ 🥱.

For this painting I used mainly transparent and semi transparent pigments and only one wash of colour on her body to make her glow with light. I plan to paint a rooster as soon as I can as well so that we can have a matching pair.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. There are plenty of progress photos of my painting to help you on your way.

The reference photo was taken by Leonhard Niederwimmer and I downloaded it from Pixabay. Here is the link: https://pixabay.com/photos/chicken-eggs-flesh-roast-chicken-4649258/

I hope you enjoy painting this 'chook' and I look forward to seeing your paintings.

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Hi Glenda, I don't really have a preference over Gold Ochre PY42 or Yellow Ochre PY43. Both of the tubes I have are Winsor & Newton. PY42 is a synthetic pigment. Both colours are warm. Gold Ochre is semi transparent and staining and Yellow Ochre is semi opaque but isn't staining. If you want a colour that lifts more easily then go for Yellow Ochre or vice versa.

Soe Ngwe

Hi Louise, can I know which brand of gold ocher do you use? Thanks

Louise De Masi

Hi Soe, Winsor & Newton for this painting. There's a Supplies List you can download with the other files. It's listed on there. Thank you! 💛

Melanie Newberry

I’m painting this right now. One of my hens is sick this week and not going to make it. So painting this comforts me. What I DONT like is I can’t get the word “chooks” out of my brain now! I’m calling them all chook chooks every morning…Thanks Louise!

Louise De Masi

I'm so sorry you have a sick chook Melanie. I was so sad when one of our chooks got sick. We took her to the vet but she didn't make it. Hugs 💕! Sorry to put that word in your head..... 🥴💖

Melanie Newberry

I actually love the word now. Seems more fun than the word “hen”.

Cynthia Negrucci

This painting was so much fun to do! I learned so much from it. I will have to practice the negative painting some more but overall, I’m happy with my painting. I’ll probably paint it again and hopefully see the difference. Thanks Louise for this great tutorial!

Nancy Guenther

Thank you, Louise. I really enjoyed painting this chook. Looking forward to giving the rooster a go as well.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Nancy. I hope you enjoy painting the rooster too.

Sandra Openshaw

Love it lol. 7 mins in and she looks like a perfect over ready chicken. Will deffinately be doing this one with the Rooster. Fabulous turorial Louise!

Sonja Mills

Our sweet girl Miss Henny died suddenly last night so I painted this picture this morning for her. She was a Rhode Island Red and looked identical to this painting. She was a very sweet and affectionate young lady.

Louise De Masi

I'm so sorry Sonja. Hugs to you. I hope the painting will always remind you of her. 🥰

David Molloy

So sorry to hear that Sonja, sending love from England.xx

Juliana

The chicken tutorial is not working

Louise De Masi

Hi Juliana, Dom here. This tutorial? I can confirm that it's working for me. The video plays.

Juliana

Thank you Louise, it took me to a bunch of different links and I could access on you tube which it was different because I always access through patreon this time it took me to youtube

Judy Breedlove

Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you, Louise.

MartyJ

Louise, isn't funny how names move about. What I mean is we always call chickens chucks also and always have. Until you said this I didn't realise that this would have happened. I live in England and come from the North East. Chuck, chuck, chuck. It's also a greeting we use on new year's eve when we go 'lucky birding', or first footing. Part of the saying is, ' I'm you lucky bird chuck chuck, if you don't let me in' and it goes on. I'll look forward to the painting, I'm on one of you pansy at the moment.

Julie Hopkins

Looking forward to painting this. Thank you for the wonderful tutorials Louise.

Ellie

Amazing tutorial, can't wait to try it! Thank you very much Louise 😍😊❤🐔

Siddharth Singh

This is a lovely tutorial Louise . Would love to do a rooster with long curly tail feathers please if you may find to do a tutorial on that 🙂

Kileen P Smith

Just finished watching this tutorial. I've already drawn it out. Can't wait to start to lay on the paint!! Thank you, Louise! P.S...I tend to be a "fuss pot" as well ,so that comment got me to laughing!

Amanda B

Such a lovely image with loads of character. Thank you! I will try this at the weekend.

Louise De Masi

It is funny. It sounds like English people use a form of slang the way Australians do.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Siddharth. I'll keep an eye out for a good reference.

Louise De Masi

Lol- that's me but I try to control it these days. I hope you enjoy painting it.

Kelly Halligan

Curious why you use sepia as opposed to vandyke brown or burnt umber? Thanks

Louise De Masi

No reason at all Kelly. I'm in the habit of using Sepia whenever I need a really dark brown. Use Vandyke Brown if you have it - Burnt Umber may not be dark enough though.

Kileen P Smith

Just finished! It was so much fun seeing it take shape. Made a few mistakes, but that's okay. I will be trying the Rhino next. Can't wait to get started on it, so I may just do it today. It can be my birthday gift to myself! Thank you Louise, for another fabulous tutorial.

Louise De Masi

Is it your birthday today? Happy Birthday if it is! 🎉 If not today then Happy Birthday when it is. Thank you Kileen.

Denise Hems

Do you ever get painters block, I try and draw the photo as I am trying to improve my drawing , I painted the elephant and I was really pleased with the result. Now I try to paint the chicken and the sheep and they look awful it's either too wet or too dry just practise I guess.

Louise De Masi

You are right Denise, it is just practise. I have times when I paint two or three different paintings in a row and none of them turn out. That gets me down sometimes but I always try to remember to learn from the failed paintings. I go through a lot of paper and I have many failed paintings, all artists do, so don't be hard on yourself. I rarely get painter's block. I usually have so many things I want to paint that I don't know where to start. Painting is tiring so take plenty of breaks and don't try to get a painting done in one sitting or even one day. Take a few days to do a painting. If it doesn't work the first time, do it a second time on the back of the failed painting and then a third time.

Denise Hems

Thank you Louise , I will keep going as I love it just frustrating at times.

Judith Blades

just can't unsee baby white cockatoo on hen's back

Shelly Solle

A blow dryer is a great tool. You can get one super cheap too.

Wendy Kelly

So glad I finally got to watch this! Have been wanting to do a series of roosters (they are so majestic and colorful!), and watching your techniques are going to be so valuable. Thank you!

Deborah Russell

Thanks for the tutorial! I gave it a go in spite of doing it on the wrong side of my paper! Ha! Mine turned out different but still, your help kept me going to the finish line!

Louise De Masi

Fabulous Deborah! Lol- I've done that myself. I was half way through a painting and wondered why the paper felt slightly different.... 😆.

Kelle Luoma

I ended up using Van Dyke brown myself, as I didn't like the mixing of the Sepia, Gold Ochre and Quinacridone Dark Gold that I ended up using.

Maria Spanbroek

Hi Louise, I’ve been watching various tutorials, you are a fabulous teacher, thank you. I decided to try this chook and because I’d just purchased the best paper I’ve ever used, Hahnemulle Harmony, I cut my A4 in half. Am I correct in saying that I made it harder for myself going small? I ask, because when watching you paint in another tutorial I realised your paintings are quite big, which may seem intimidating at first but now I’m wondering if it will give me more room to breathe & correct? Thank you, Maria

Louise De Masi

Hi Maria, thanks so much, that's very kind of you. Yes you definitely would have made it harder for yourself painting small like that. If you can, try to paint a similar size to what I'm painting. I always write the size of my paper on the supplies lists and I also mention it at the start of each tutorial.

Maria Spanbroek

Thanks heaps for confirming, I’ll definitely follow along with the sizes from now on.

Nikki Sprague

Thank you! I always learn so much. This was very fun tutorial. My sister started raising chickens this year. Finishing this gave me a head start on Christmas! Now on to the rooster (they ended up with 2 accidentally this year 😬)

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Nikki. That's great! I hope your sister loves it.

Bonnie Williams

This was such a delight to watch and Louise you talk about fussing but your last minute fussing always makes it better! I hope I learn to "fuss" like you and make mine better in the end - Bonnie

Jeannine Johnson

Hello Louise! and everyone here on the Chicken tutorial. I'm new to Patreon and your site here. I have a couple questions: The video isn't very clear, it's dark not like what I see on your regular you tube videos. Also the video is small in size, and if I enlarge the screen to full size it's very blurry. Not sure why? Are these videos different than the regular ones you post on You Tube? Thank you!

Louise De Masi

Hi Jeannine, welcome! Something is wrong on your end I'd say. The videos are normal size and high definition- the same as the videos you see on my YouTube channel. If you are using an iPad try turning it off and turning it back on again. Also if you are using the Patreon app try logging into Patreon through your internet browser instead and see if that helps.
