Hi everyone,

Here is the Rhinoceros tutorial.

For this painting I used only two colours: French Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna. I painted on Fabriano Artistico soft press paper.  I bought some to try it and I enjoyed painting on it but you don't need to go out and buy it to paint the rhino. Use whatever paper you love using. At the end of the painting I used some coloured pencil and my graphite pencil for some embellishments but they weren't necessary.

There are 8 progress photos of my painting to help you. I've included a photo of my finished painting as well as a scan of it because I think the photo shows the true colours better than the scan.

The reference photo was taken by David Clode and I downloaded it from Unsplash website: https://unsplash.com/photos/nGrcKcgiXfo

In other news:

I'm currently working on the Peony tutorial for Patreon and I plan to have a new tutorial for beginners this month as well. I'm amazed at the beautiful glass vase paintings you have been producing and the chicken paintings are fabulous as well!

I hope you enjoy watching/painting this rhino.

Louise

💙🤎

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

I battle with flowers and birds, animals I find easier...so amazing how we all differ

Dianna

Anxious to do this one!

Lisbeth

I just love your limited paillet 😍 just like in the magnolia painting. I will try to drive into this one now 😅

Lisbeth

One question please, is the soft Fabriano paper the same as the hotpressed? I cant find any named softpress

Louise De Masi

Soft press sits in between cold press and hot press (in terms of texture/tooth) - I'm not sure Fabriano make it anymore. I haven't been able to buy any more of it in Australia - which is a shame because it's beautiful to paint on. I would just use cold press if that's what you are used to.

Lisbeth

Ah, that's maybe why I can't find it. Thank you for your reply ☺

Elaine

Thank you Louise, he’s so gorgeous 👏🏻🥰

Joaquin Romero

Beautiful!.....he or she reminds me when I was an animal keeper for Rhinos at a Park in Northern California named Ma & Pa rhino. Will give this one a go! I appreciate your hard work and tenacity for detail.

This is so beautiful!! ❤️🔥 Someday I hope to reach this skill level! 🤞💕

Audrey Reed

Yay! I can hardly wait for the weekend!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Joaquin. Wow! We have an ex rhino keeper in our midst! How wonderful.

Jill Lewis

Stunning! Speaks to my South African heart, so excited to try this one. Many thanks, Louise!

Marika Roth

I am so excited about doing the rhino. What is soft press paper, btw? thanks

Louise De Masi

Soft press paper sits in between hot press and cold press for texture. It has a slight tooth. Fabriano makes it. It's lovely to paint on.

Thank you for this tutorial! I am painting it right now. I was wondering if u have any other beautiful complementary duo's as recommendation like FU and Burnt Sienna. (From Winsor & Newton paints)

Marika Roth

I cannot get that darn masking fluid on right. Any suggestions? Tried ruling pen, brush, etc.

Louise De Masi

I always find it difficult to apply masking fluid the way I want it too. For this I used a long thin liner brush and that seemed to do the job well.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Jacky, I hope you enjoy it. There are no duos that I keep coming back to yet like FU and BS but I'll let everyone know if I do. 😀

Pam Stewart

I just love this guy! You spoke so highly of the soft pressed paper in the YouTube video that I decided to give it a try so will have to wait for it to arrive before I dive in. I did the elephant last fall for my granddaughter, and this will make a wonderful companion! Thanks for your wonderful tutorials.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Pam. Thanks so much. I hope you like painting on the new paper.

Some frustration for me. I am relatively successful in doing the bird and flower tutorials, but each time I do a mammal, the elephant, tiger, lion and rhino, I manage to make a mess out of them. Do artists find themselves leaning toward certain subjects partly because they are more successful with a particular subject matter? I really want to do the big mammals, esp. those indigenous to Africa and S. America, but not sure if I should keep wasting materials and time. Thanks, Louise, for your excellent teaching. I have learned so much from you, but here I have met some stumbling blocks.

Louise De Masi

Yes I would say a lot of artists lean towards a certain subject that they are successful with and there's nothing wrong with that. When I first started to paint, birds were what I had most success with. So I kept painting them. Then I started to paint a few flowers. They were awful so I went back to birds (my comfort zone). Then I tried a few more flowers and eventually I started to improve. Keep painting birds and flowers to build your skill and when you're ready try another animal. If it doesn't work, try it again and even a third time if you have to. I have stumbling blocks all the time. Many of my paintings don't turn out and a lot of the paintings I put on here I had to paint two or even three times before I was happy with them. Persistence is key.

Hi Louise, I am totally loving your tutorials. I have essentially been a hot-pressed-wet-on-dry botanicals person for the last 6 years. But i am loving the the cold pressed paper wet on wet experience, thanks to your tutorials. I used Arches paper that comes in blocks and was never stretching it before for the hot-pressed variety. After watching your stretching video I have started stretching the cold-pressed 300gsm paper. I have tried soaking it for 5 -7 mins and soaking it for 30-40 mins. Yet when it dries up it still buckles up. I tape while it's just damp. What am I doing wrong? This beautiful Rhino is my next project. I finished stretching it and I wet the paper a second time when I noticed that after the first wetting it had buckled. Now even after the second drying, it has still become uneven on the sides. Please guide me.

Shelly Solle

Are you stapling on gator board, and taping with brown tape? Don't get that tape too wet. Use a sponge and one quick swipe. I found I had to do both to get it to stay flat. After that dries, I also use the washi style tape on top of that.

Vee

Thank you so much for this great guy! For most South Africans this almost extinct animal hits a very soft spot. I trust that the poaching and incredibly cruel slaughtering of these majestic animals can speedily be stopped. It kills me to read about a baby keening by its slain mother's side. This is a painting I cannot wait to try - thank you!

Pam Stewart

Louise, I LOVE the soft press paper! More than anything I’ve used! I love painting on it and also find it quite forgiving! Thanks for sharing!

Louise De Masi

That's great Pam. I'm very happy you like it. I love it too. 💕

Louise De Masi

Me too Vee. I can't imagine a planet without them. 💕
