Hi everyone,

Here are two small harvest mice that I painted last week. This tutorial is just under an hour long. It includes wet on wet and wet and dry techniques with areas of looseness combined with detail.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. I've included plenty of progress photos of my painting to help you.

The reference photo was taken by Belinda Fewings and I downloaded it from Unsplash website here: https://unsplash.com/photos/3xR0-gjjZaY

I hope you enjoy painting them and I look forward to seeing your paintings.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photo website.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Loved painting the cute mice. I still have trouble with negative painting. Do you have a learning video on that?

Wendy Kelcey

These are just so cute and a must to paint! I hope I can do them justice! Thanks Louise!

Gail Witten

I really enjoyed this tutorial. The mice turned out well, thanks to your careful instructions.

My version of this tutorial when through alot of "Ugghh it so ugly phases. But I think nits growing on me after I added in some detail with ink pen to disguise the muddy mess of me trying to blend tide lines. It would be nice to add a photo of our work in the specific tutorial chat. Otherwise in the 2 short weeks I have been watching your tutorials I have come futher than I have in the last 5 yrs.

Louise De Masi

HI Vicki, you can upload photos in the 'chats' section of Patreon. It's the speech bubble icon in the menu. Go into 'group chats' there to join the community page.

I have looked at this image in your tutorial on soft edges. It looks such a playful picture that I am eager to have a go at. I have a question, not about this image, but I have noticed that on many of your tutorials, maybe it’s just my iPad, but there is a line and black dot on the side of the opening shot. I notice that some tutorials have a line and a red dot on the side. Is there any significance to this? Does it denote an intermediate or advanced tutorial. It reminds me of the red chillies you see on an Asian menu to denote how hot something will be. Are these playful mice too hot to handle… 😆

Louise De Masi

Hi Bridget, Dom here. That’s a good question! I’m not actually sure what you’re seeing there. We can’t spot the dots or lines on our end, so it may be something specific to the way the video is displaying on your iPad. They definitely aren’t difficulty ratings though, so the mice should be perfectly safe to tackle 😄

When this tutorial was first released, I was drawn to the piece right away and went with it. It was such a mess in the phase of painting the faces that I had to start on a new piece of paper. The mess repeated so I stopped and file the paper away. Three years later, I went through my unfinished paintings and I finally gathered enough courage to continue with it, including fixing the mistakes by minimizing them. I also realized I have gained some knowledge and skills by following other tutorials that I didn't find it as intimidating as I felt initially. Thank you Louise! Your modified version especially on the tails made the couple even cuter.

Louise De Masi

Your painting turned out beautifully! I'm glad you went back to it.

Yvonne de Visser

Thank you Yvonne. It's wonderful! I'm waiting for the blinds for the windows - hopefully they'll come within the next two weeks. I look forward to sharing the space with everyone.

I got so excited when I saw this tutorial. I can’t wait to do it!

Brigitte

Hi Louise, I’m new here. I found your channel on youtube just when I was about to give up painting. The paintings of your seahorse and these cute mice are the first works I proudly dare to show to my friends! Thank you so much and lots of love from Belgium!

Brandon Bishop

Excellent tutorial. I have a suggestion for a bird it’s called a “ nicobar pigeon.”

Louise De Masi

Thank you so much Brigitte. That's fabulous. I'm glad you are having some success.

Vee

They are so cute - thank you!

Marcela Fernandez del Rio

The cutest little fellows were a pleasure to paint. Thank you so much, they are beautiful!!

Louise De Masi

I'm glad that you enjoyed painting them. Thank you Marcela.

Dian

Hi Louise, I’m a new Patreon and am about to try the Harvest mice. I wondered if you paint with your board/paper flat or whether you tilt it slightly? Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Welcome Dian! I usually paint flat on the table. Sometimes, when I work on a background I'll lift the board to make the paint flow in the direction I want it to.

Nettie Moss

Wow - enjoyed watching this Louise! when you painted the feet and claws at the end it almost looked as if your brush is a part of you - such control and knowing where to go - an extension of your wrist and hand, does it feel like that to you?

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Nettie. Yes sometimes it does and other times I battle with it. I guess it depends on my state of mind/mood. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dian

Just finished my first Patreon tutorial (the Harvest Mice). Really enjoyed this, thank you Louise.

Madhu Braunger

Thanks for the tutorial. However, IMHO not for beginners.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Madhu, thank you. I've just changed the level to intermediate. I often find it difficult to classify the tutorials into different levels because I work step by step through every tutorial - even the advanced ones. I appreciate you letting me know.

Madhu Braunger

Going to try again today, Louise. There was too much water on the wet on wet fur. Didn't really know how to control it from seeping into the wet-on-wet above the heads. Obviously from lack of skills.
