Hi everyone,

Here is the orange rose tutorial.

My mother in law gave me a bunch of roses for my birthday and I decided to paint one of them. I've not painted a rose this colour before so I thought I'd give it a go.

With most of the tutorials I make these days I do a colour study first which helps me to work out any potential problems before I turn the camera on to film myself painting. I didn't do a study with this one. This tutorial is me painting from scratch, problem solving as I paint. I hope you enjoy it.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. I've included lots of progress photos of my painting to help you paint yours.

The reference photo for this painting is my own. I look forward to seeing your paintings.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Hi Lieve, I take some 'artistic license' when I paint and sometimes I'll play around with colour a little. It's more important to pay attention to the value of the colours rather than the hue itself. The value is how light or how dark a colour is.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Suzanne. I don't know what paint brand you have but you can substitute with Daniel Smith's Nikel Azo Yellow and Quinacridone Rose. The pigment codes are on the supplies list - so see if you have the same pigment codes on the paints you do have. They may differ slightly between brands but it's a good starting point. Here is a blog post you might find useful to bookmark that has substitute paint colours listed: https://www.louisedemasi.com/tips/2024/1/7/substituting-paint-colours-navigating-different-brands-with-ease

I’m not seeing the supplies list.

Thanks for letting me know Jeannie. It's there now. It's late and I'm tired- I forgot to upload it. 💕

Linda

Happy Belated Birthday! I hope you had a beautiful day! Your birthday roses were beautiful, and the fact that you captured one of the roses for remembrance is heartwarming! Thanks for sharing a tutorial of this splendid and stunning artwork. I can't wait to begin! 😍 Congrats on moving into your new studio! What joy!

Janet

Louise, you just made my day! I've been swooning over this painting since I saw it on Youtube, to the point where I was going to ask you in the comments if you could do a Patreon tutorial - and here it is! I plan to do it right after I finish the frangipani, which is going well. Thanks so much for these fabulous tutorials!

Carol L Banach

I'll be giving this a try. Thanks so much for sharing.

Louise De Masi

Thanks very much Deborah. I did have a lovely day. I got to spend it with my little grandson. My pleasure. I hope you enjoy painting it. 💕

Louise De Masi

Thanks Janet. That's good that the frangipani is going well, I'm glad. I hope you enjoy painting this one too. 💕

Eleanor

Hi Louise. So glad to be back and being your patron. I really missed you and your community. I am looking forward to painting this rose this weekend!

Yvonne Walton

Thank you Louise for another beautiful Rose painting I love roses. I hope you had a lovely birthday. I have want to paint a rose with two colours like Double Delight.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Yvonne, I did. A two coloured rose - I'll keep that in mind for next time.

Lily O

Thank you for posting this gorgeous rose and tutorial! I'm trying it out and having horrible results trying to mix the greeny-brown. I keep getting a granulating green-bronze! Help! Perhaps I can make mix with burnt sienna?

Louise De Masi

Hi Lily, You could try that. Mix some Burnt Sienna with a green and see if you prefer the colour. Alternatively mix a little blue and yellow into Burnt Sienna.

Nettie Moss

I enjoyed watching this Louise - it is too hot and humid to paint at the moment, we have drought conditions and risk of wild fires - so I decided to spend my time with you! I had forgotten that technique you use of transparent yellow over the dried paint - it really brings the work alive doesn't it. . . I wonder if I can apply it to portraits - one way to find out! It is due to get a bit cooler soon so shall have a try. I wish I had your patience when painting . . . Many thanks for all you do for us ;-)

Louise De Masi

Thanks Nettie. Yes glazing can be very helpful to alter colours. Play around with the paints and you'll be amazed! I hope it cools down for you soon. That will mean it will be warming up over here.....I don't know if I'm ready for it yet 😳😬!

Louise De Masi

Thanks for letting me know I haven't done that Carol. I appreciate it. I'll do it now.

Yvonne Walton

Hi Louise I just watch your ink October the line rose. I was wondering if you could post this on your patreon and the line drawing please

Louise De Masi

Hi Yvonne, Yes I will - a few patrons have asked me to. I'll voice it over and make it a tutorial. I'll try to get it done this month. Thanks.

Yvonne Walton

Thank you Louise I hope you are feeling better.
