Hi everyone,

Here is the Panda Tutorial. This is my first time painting a Panda.

I tried Stonehenge Aqua watercolour paper for the first time with this painting. I often get asked to recommend different papers so I thought I'd try it because it's not as expensive as Arches paper.

I was really happy with the way it performed. It's 100% cotton and washes went on well with no major problems. The only problem I could find with it is that it is quite fragile in comparison to the other papers I have used. I wouldn't recommend using it if you were going to use masking fluid on your painting. I plan to buy some more blocks and I'll use them to do my studies.

I recommend watching the tutorial all the way through before you attempt to paint it and be prepared to paint it more than once. Your first painting might not turn out the way you had hoped so if it doesn't, try again. I often paint the same painting two or three times before I'm happy with it. I painted another panda after I did this one and I hope to make a tutorial of it as well.

The files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. I have included two progress photos of my painting. If you need me to enlarge the line drawing over two files, let me know and I will.

The reference photo was taken by Nick115 and I downloaded it from Pixabay: https://pixabay.com/photos/panda-bear-zoo-predator-china-3811303/

It's not a geat photo as far as lighting goes but I loved the smile on the panda.

I hope you learn a lot and enjoy painting it.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Karen

I loved watching this tutorial, it was fascinating watching the Panda come to life, but I still consider myself a beginner painter, have been trying to paint for a year now, and as a beginner I watch this tutorial and think I can't paint like that. I will give it a go, but it seems daunting to start. Hopefully it goes well.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Karen. If it doesn't work out the first time paint it a few times.

Katy Gardner

I painted this for the first time today! I found it to be quite challenging but I did learn a few things along the way, so I'm going to try it again!

Dawn Michelsen

Hi Louise, I bombed miserably my first try. I had some Stonehenge hot press and used it. I know that there is a big difference and I have only painted on it a few times. I love this panda and am going to give it a go on cold press Arches. Glad to be following your tutorials.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Dawn. I think cold press is easier to paint on than hot press so that's a good idea. Don't be disheartened - I have lots of failures. The failed paintings help you learn. ❤️

Diane Hoying

Is the mop brush you use also called a quill brush? It comes up as a quill when I try to look it up. Also, in another tutorial you recommend a size 4 mop brush. I don't have a mop (or quill) brush yet. If I get one to start with, which size would you recommend as most useful, and should it say "quill"? Thanks! Your tutorials have really been so wonderful and helpful!

Louise De Masi

Hi Diane, A mop brush has soft rounded bristles and comes to a gentle point whereas a quill brush typically has a long pointed tip. Mop brushes are great for wet on wet techniques, blending colours, broad washes and painting in an expressive manner. Quills are suitable for creating fine lines and detail work. I think some suppliers interchange the terms on their websites. They might call a quill brush a mop and a mop brush a quill…..which confused me. I thought I was buying a mop brush when I was buying a quill. I apologise for the confusion - I think the brush I am using here is a quill. Thank you!

Louise De Masi

I have a few different sized quills - I think a 4 is a good size to buy if you don't have one. I also have some mop brushes - a size 4 is a good size for painting broad washes.

Diane Hoying

Thank you so much for your quick reply!

Eileen Graves

This was my first tutorial of yours, and I loved it. You’re a great teacher!

Sonja Mills

Omgosh I did this panda three times and finally figured out some things that have been going wrong! I am not as fast and confident as Louise, so I wet sections sepately and worked on them in a different order. It’s not perfect, but I’m actually proud of my progress and feel so hopeful!! Ten million thank yous Louise for being the best teacher ever!!

Louise De Masi

That's fantastic to hear! You should be proud of your progress, and it's great that you're finding your own approach that works well for you. Thank you Sonja. ❤️

Julie Smout

Thanks Louise for an amazing tutorial, I also just completed my third attempt and still going back in with some more detail. I have learnt to completely watch your tutorial first instead of trying to keep up with you.Julie

Chantal

Oh boy… a few lessons learned here and the first one… read the comments! 😊 Second , listen to the tutorial a few times, Louise’s instructions are very clear but going into it with my own expectations and ideas of how it’s done I started in the wrong direction. All on me. Sonja Mills’s post read after the fact now make so much sense for many reasons and the first one is to not be pressured by drying time. Will post my finished 3rd attempt in the completed tutorials, I’m pretty pleased with my Panda, and will revisit An other pleasant tutorial!

Louise De Masi

It sounds like you learnt a lot along the way, and that’s half the battle! I’m so glad your third attempt came together and that you’re pleased with your panda. I saw it in the chat and it's beautiful! Well done Chantal.

Linda McKendrick

Oh he is so beautiful!! I have 3 half finished flowers to work on but might just leave them for the weekend and paint Pretty Panda instead!!

Belinda Hay

Oh this is gorgeous ❤️

Hi Louise, is there a special eraser to get the pencil lines off or even reduce their appearance? For me, no matter what, I can’t get the pencil lines to come off after painting on or even near them. It’s like once they get wet, they won’t budge. I’ve tried my plastic eraser , my pink eraser as well as my kneaded eraser. Thank you! ❤️

Audrey Reed

This is so cute! I can hardly wait to paint it (but I am on punishment until I finish the rhino. no new tutorials!)

Louise De Masi

Hi Jeannie, No there's no special eraser that I know of. I find I can minimise the graphite slightly if it's only one light wash but I can never get it off altogether. I use a normal plastic eraser. I'm able to remove any lines that aren't covered with paint and that 'cleans' the painting up for me but those lines under the paint are there to stay. If there are any lines that really bug me I'll use my eradicator brush (damp) to rub them off but that will also remove paint so I may need to do some repairs after that.

cristina

Hi Jeannie! You can also try the Graphite Aquarelle from Faber-Castell. They are pencils that dissolve with water, so do a test first, so you see how long it takes them to disappear. I wouldn't use them on wet on wet.

jk.art.studio

Thank you Cristina! I’ll give that a try!

Janet

Great video, Louise. I loved the technique you used to create the fuzzy ears. I think I'll have to practice that before the actual painting. By the way, I've been binge-watching and loving your tutorials. You always want to deepen the color; to take it a step further, and I admire that. I'm still at the stage where I'm happy if the paint looks decent on the paper. I'm working on the flamingo now, and I just want to thank you for many happy hours of watching and painting. I think your new grandson might enjoy this panda in his room. Also, have you ever thought of doing a peacock tutorial?

Una Baralo

Hi Louise. Thank you for the Panda . Very excited here. I bought a cradle board 16 inches x 20 inches and I have my paper glue to it and ready to go. I would love a large outline please. What a lovely wait to send Labor Day weekend here in America. Thank you again.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Una. The enlarged line drawing is there now. I hope you enjoy it.

Andrea Flemming

Such a charming boy! I'm looking forward to try at the weekend, take my brushes after the hot days with only graphite work :)

Una Baralo

Very much appreciated 🥰

Basia

Beautiful ! Can't wait to start !

Stephanie Grow

Oh I can’t wait! I had to order a color

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Janet. I tend to build up the darks gradually. I have a peacock on my list of subjects to paint for tutorials.

Meghan Knight

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I can’t wait to give it a try. I’ve used Stonehenge Aqua quite a bit and have noticed how fragile it is. I’ve found that if I use my Heat It Craft Tool when removing tape the tape will lift off Stonehenge without issue. I haven’t tried that with the masking fluid yet but I wonder if that might help! Thanks for all your tutorials, it’s always such a joy to paint with you!

Kelly Halligan

I am done with the most of the bear. I do not have PY 150-I mostly have Holbein, I dont have nickel azo other. I have so many yellows I dont want to buy a new one, so would lemon yellow work?

Louise De Masi

Yes. A cool yellow will make a brighter green whereas a warm yellow will make a duller green but use whatever yellow you have.

Nancy Guenther

This panda was really fun and I like how he turned out. Thank you so much, Louise!

Corinne Armstrong

I can't wait to try this out. I want to give it to my granddaughter for Christmas, she loves Pandas

Nancy Gosnell

So cute! Can you include a line drawing for a 12" X 16" (over 2 papers) please.

jk.art.studio

I bought a Staedtler Mars plastic eraser and it works great!!! ❤️ I was using a Tombow eraser previously.

Giselle Flanagan

Thank you Louise, this was the first of your tutorials that I have tried. It worked out really well. I am so proud of myself for completing the painting. I cant wait to try the next one. You have given me the confidence to try water colours... really love it.

Shelly Solle

This was really fun to do. I even had someone who wanted to buy it, but I told them it cannot be sold, so Merry Christmas. :)

Louise De Masi

That's awesome Shelly. I'm glad you enjoyed painting it. You can sell this one if you want to.

Shelly Solle

I just gave it to her. Said she could pay the shipping. Shipping is $100. LOL. j/k

Fadila Sides

magnifique j'adore grand bravo en plus j'adore les pandas merci

Carol Crawford Barfield

I love your panda! I hope you will do a tutorial of the other one you painted with this one. They would make a lovely pair to frame. Thank you.
