Hi everyone,

A few patrons have asked me to paint another crow so I painted this one thinking it would be great for Halloween. I think this bird is a crow rather than a raven but please correct me if I'm wrong. I googled the difference between ravens and crows and I think ravens are bigger than this bird but I'm not sure.

Part 2 of the crow tutorial is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/73272718

I'm busy working on the voice over of all the other paintings I showed you last month. I'll release them one at a time when they are ready. A few patrons have also asked me if I'd post a full tutorial of the pen and wash rose I have on my YouTube channel. I'll do that too, hopefully before the end of the month. That will be a good one for beginners.

All of the files you need to complete this painting are attached below my message here for you to download.

The reference photo was taken by Pete Nuij and I downloaded it from Unsplash here: https://unsplash.com/photos/c3NMEtK9fuI

As always, I think it's best to watch the tutorial all the way through before you attempt to paint it.  It took me two days to paint it so take your time with it. The rusty gate was time consuming.

I hope you enjoy it.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

This has been difficult for me. I did the first dark layers and realized I had lost my pencil guides for the feathers. Do I just need todo darker lines? I usually make them very light.

Louise De Masi

I'm sorry you lost your feather lines Linda. One way to remedy that is to get some tracing paper and trace over the line drawing. Then you could line it up over your crow, tape it into position and use some white transfer paper to trace them back in.

Linda Wagoner Postlewaite

Thank you for replying so quickly. I’m going to try to do this! I love your tutorials!

Hi Louise I was considering to do this painting next. I love how you have the beautiful purple and blue showing through on the bird. I watch the video first before I do them but I noticed the pencil lines on the wing just about disappeared when you do the first wash of black. Do you redraw them again without showing us or is it my imagination? thanks Yvonne

Louise De Masi

Hi Glenda, I'm so sorry I missed your comment here. I'm late to the party- but I would paint the background in first before I painted the bird. That way you don't risk disturbing the dark colour on the bird if you wet the paper beside it.

Louise De Masi

Hi Yvonne, I could just see the lines through that wash so when it was dry I went over them with my graphite pencil again to see them more clearly. If you lose them altogether after you put a wash on, here's something you can try: Trace your line drawing onto a piece of tracing paper. Get yourself some transfer paper- (saral paper) in this case you'd need a coloured transfer paper - probably white. Place the tracing paper (with the line drawing on it) over the top of your painting and line it up with your painting. Tape it in position. Slip the transfer paper underneath and retrace the line drawing on top of the area where you have lost your lines. With this painting make sure your line drawing (particularly the wing feathers) is quite dark before you start painting.

Hi Louise, I just looked at your reference photo on Unsplash, and discovered it was taken very close to where we live and walk. Small world. He’s on my To Do list.

Terri Robertson

This was such a great tutorial, thank you so much Louise. I'm so proud of myself for finishing it. I lost the feather outline because my first wash was a bit too heavy, but I persevered and took my time with it. I've posted it in the FB group - and I couldn't be happier with it! Thank you 💕

Louise De Masi

Thank you Terri. I'm glad you had success with it. I saw your painting. It's fabulous- well done! 💛

Love the tinges of violet - it gives the impression of a true black bird. Thank you Louise!

Kelle Luoma

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I promised my son a crow/raven two years ago, and have never been happy with the way the original turned out. This will be perfect.

Pam Leverich

I love this crow. Can you tell me the finished size of the painting? I assume when I print the enlarged right and left sides, that will be the actual image.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Pam. If you print the enlarged version it should be close to the size of my painting. I've put the size of the paper I used on the Supplies List.
