Hi everyone,

Here is a tutorial for beginners. These are little studies that I thought might be useful to paint on greeting cards.

I was quite happy with the autumn leaf that I painted here so I decided to paint a larger version of it as a finished painting. I'll post the larger version leaf tutorial today as well.

I hope you enjoy painting these little studies. If you have no success the first time you paint them, paint them again. Keep trying. Painting in watercolour is not easy but it's fun. Enjoy the process of painting and try to forget about the outcome.

All of the files you need to complete the studies are attached below my message here.

The reference photo of the leaf I took myself. You'll find it attached below.

The orange pumpkin reference photo was taken by Nikhita Singhal and I downloaded it from Unsplash website: https://unsplash.com/photos/4m1qd_DjAx0

The white pumpkin reference photo was taken by Aaron Itzerott and I also downloaded it from Unsplash website: https://unsplash.com/photos/siFvSqKSidE

PS: I know some of you are waiting patiently for the Cheetah tutorial. I'll be posting that next month. I have finished voicing it over but I need to spend a day or two checking it. The Woodpecker I am still working on. I'll be posting it in January. Thank you for your patience.

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Hi Louise, I am a new member as of today and excited about getting into your program but have been floating around and I like your techniques and instructions and I think a drawing class would be great!!!!

Nancy Guenther

Thank you so much, Louise. I used the white pumpkin for a get well card today.

Hi Louise, I am a beginner and am loving following the tutorials. My question is whether I should purchase some Da Vinci brushes? They are expensive but gorgeous. As a beginner what should be the most important one that I should purchase first? I was thinking Da Vinci Maestro Brush series 35, Size #5.

Louise De Masi

Hi Michele, They are beautiful brushes to use- it's up to you. I also like using the Da Vinci Colineo brushes (synthetic). If you were to buy a maestro, a #5 would be a good size. I also use #7 or 8 quite a bit as well.

This is serendipitous...I literally painted a pumpkin twice today, and still unhappy with it, I came here to look for a tutorial and found this. It was meant to be!

Lovely, really appreciate focused studies like these, especially after trying to the more advanced paintings which seem to take me a long time....😅🤣!

I agree it's nice to have these smaller studies occasionally -- I had not started my pumpkin painting yet but had downloaded a pic and this was so helpful in thinking it through.

Carrie

Thank you for posting, Louise. I'm going to do this today. Just wondering if you would consider doing a drawing class?

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Carrie. Drawing classes were on my list of things to get done this year but unfortunately I ran out of time. I hope to get to it when I can. Thank you!
